MOONLIGHT SERENADE Glenn Miller I stand at your gate and the song that I sing is of moonlight. I stand and I wait for the touch of your hand in the June night. The roses are sighing a Moonlight Serenade. The stars are aglow and tonight how their light sets me dreaming. My love, do you know that your eyes are like stars brightly beaming? I bring you and sing you a Moonlight Serenade. Let us stra...

It seems to me that early in his career, Ray sang in a higher register. Maybe GM wanted it that way so that would separate him from his brother Bob with Jimmy Dorsey. Consequently, some of Ray's vocals seem to me to be on the high end of his range without GM his voice seems to be pitched lower IMHO.

Ray had not only a beautiful voice, his rendition of tunes was, to my mind perfect. I first heard him, as a musician's young daughter, with a mother who was a lyric soprano, in Sydney, Australia. I was fascinated by not only the miller band's ""big"" sound, which my father explained to me, but also entranced by Ray's beautiful voice. As a "forward"" child, I couldn't help thinking how handsome Ray was. Next to Ms Holliday and Tony Bennett Ray is my favourite singer. Marilyn

Ray had his own band in the 1950's. I seem to remember his arranger was Hale Rood who wrote great charts and he also wrote for high school and college bands too. If you can find some of Ray's late 1950's broadcasts - he had the best big band arrangement of "Just In Time" backing his vocal. Many people think the 1940's were the great big band days - but there was great big band music in the 1950's & 60's.

Miller never gave Klink a fair shake. He only took a handful of solos during his stint with Miller.Miller was far more intersted in Beneke. What he should have done was what Basie did:feature both players-Beneke on all the jazz ballads and Klink on the uptempo stuff.

I agree with your conclusion with the exception of perhaps putting Mr. Sinatra up there with Ray as being the tops in the business. I'm also sure I don't know the whole story but I still can't fathom why Glenn let a singer of Ray's caliber go from his band.

Ray Eberle sang lead vocals on another Glenn Miller composition from 1939, the ballad "Sometime", which was only performed for radio broadcast. "Sometime" was written by Glenn Miller, Chummy MacGregor, and lyeicist Mitchell Parish, who also wrote the lyrics to "Moonlight Serenade". "Sometime" remains a rare song by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. It features an opening melodic riff similar to "Moonlight Serenade". It was performed at the Meadowbrook Ballroom in early 1939 by Glenn Miller.

This man had such a great voice, it really is so sad that he & GM had such an unfortunate falling out. Does anyone know the story behind why GM " fired" this man at the very height of his vocal power? He had a soothing, effortless sound & " At Last" is an all-time classic. Thank-you Mr Ray Eberle. A lack of professional discipline led to Eberle's departure from Miller's orchestra in June 1942, though the actual event that caused his dismissal was beyond his control. Stuck in traffic during a Chicago engagement, he was late for rehearsal. Miller fired him on the spot, no questions asked.
