Purls Before Thyme
Norway

Hi, I'm Elise and I knit (a lot), welcome to my channel. Here I share my projects, designs and thoughts.
The best gifts to give knitters, for all budgets 🎀
Here's a little guide to what your knitting friends and family might want. You may not have heard of these things before, but trust me, knitters will know.
In today's world of overconsumption I think it is important to try to support local small businesses and makers above mass produced alternatives from large online retailers that tend to dominate the internet.

+1 for Leuchtturm notebooks and their page numbers! I have big ones and small but def the big ones feel like they allow you to have bigger thoughts I always reckon :)
I agree! I had big ones when I was a student and they were so helpful!
where did you get the acorn set of markers?
I got them from a Norwegian retailer called lanabotanica, they have an online shop
It’s really refreshing to see recommendations ‘for’ the knitters. There are tons of videos for knitters to gift-knit 😅 but not much for the knitters to receive! And I completely agree with your thought on the yarns…I wouldn’t like to get one for a gift unless I specifically pinpoint exactly what I want 😅. By the way, it would be really interesting to see your review on the knitting needles and notions…😊
Congrats on 1 year of podcasting! I love your channel!
Thank you for following along ✨🌸
Love all these recommendations. +1 on gift cards for local yarn shops. My wife is a knitter and she will be getting a gift card. I'd never presume to know what kinds of yarn she's into!
I have to share how to pronounce "pajauta" correctly :D It's a Lithuanian word, chatgpt gives this transcription of the word - "pah-yow-tah". In the first syllable (pah) the "a" is short. The word refers to an emotional or intuitive sense or perception, often related to a person's inner feeling or awareness. Sorry for the lecture :D But it is a very beautiful word, it is not used often in daily language. Also, your sweater is beautiful, could you share who designed it? Or is it your own creation?
Thank you for the pronounciation correction! I love the meaning as well, seems to fit the designs so well. The sweater I'm wearing is the Aegyo sweater by Aeygo knit, made with Snefnug from camarose.
Your Aegyo looks better than the original 😊 By the way, I mainly use Chiaogoo needles, however after hearing so much praise about Seeknit I bought couple of cables and several pairs of interchangeable needles. I don't know if it is just me, but I did not enjoy knitting with them as they were not as smooth and my yarn would constantly get stuck somewhere around the needle. I don't want to sound negative, but before buying a set I would investigate more 😅
Thanks for the suggestions.
😮Yet again a "Welcome or welcome back..." do any knit Podcaster have an original idea? You are truly hard to listen to in this video. If you didn't like Petite Knits just don't follow her or use the patterns. Such an inflated ego that you think you should influence other knitters.
Fair enough that you want to explore other designers but to say that most of Petiteknits patterns are stockinette and raglan sleeves is not true. Her designs include textured garments, colorwork, different shoulder constructions, double knitted button bands etc - she has designs for beginners to experienced knitters - all with great finish🧶❤
She does have a range of techniques in her patterns, I agree, but a big chunk of her portfolio consists of top down stockinette sweaters. 😊🩷🌸
Interesting take. PetiteKnit seemed to have got you kickstarted back into knitting. Her designs have simple outlines and can allow you to acquire different techniques that give good results. One they are mastered you can reall start adapting her patterns. This video encourages people who are looking for variations on a theme. However, I never expect to fill my knitwear drawer with garmets from one designer. Neither donyou and this video bears witness to your evolution and having kearnt a lot from one designer whi gave you the confidence to look for others. (My own big step was getting to grips with the lengthy decriptions of Nordic patterns generally. Initially, I found it difficult to see the bigger picture with so much text!).
Loved this video! What do you think about mohair garments for longevity? I also read that some people say that knits with seams last longer than those knitted in the round, do you think its true? New knitter here :)
I think mohair has a good reputation for preventing/reducing pilling. Regarding your point about seamed vs seamless it really depends on so many factors, like yarn type, weight and needle size. I suppose seams can act as anchoring points so warping is more limited. I'll read more into that though, I thank you 💕
I had no idea that Christmas jumpers were such a big thing in the UK. I always think of Darcy’s moose sweater from Bridget Jones’ Diary. 😂
They are quite popular! Now I really want to watch Bridget Jones again 😄
Japanese patterns are easy to translate. Lots of videos on TH-cam explaining how they work and basic translation.
These were really nice! I really want to do a Christmas sweater this year or next, but I'll probably do one that's a bit more in your face. I really like the republication Sandnes did this year, or the Northern Augustins No. 6, which I think is so classy while still having candy canes and stuff like that. For a more subtle one, I know Sandnes has their Julegrynet, which is a bit more chunky but looks really cozy and christmasy in that colour scheme.
I’m knitting the bow sweater right now in an Anna sui color scheme and it works beautifully as an alternative sweater too!
That's going to turn out so amazing! 🎀
THX , they where all really good xmas sweaters. Love the Japanese cardigan, wow that was nice. I have made Magnolia bloom in a red color as one of my xmas sweaters. Another one is the Lou genser (sandnesgarn) in a xmas lighter green. The lou genser I can stæsh up a bit for a more xmas vibe during desember - but otherwise it works fine other month too. This year I think will do the snow sweater (KNO) and the Luminen from Sari. Good luck with yours. I will be happy to see it :)
The El Naranjo sweater looks very similar to the Japanese sweater.
I suppose they have similar branch motifs, but there are some differences particularly in gauge, fit and style. For instance, Japanese is a cardigan and the branch motif goes quite deep into the body and sleeves as well as being wider, so has fewer repeats. The El Naranjo branch motifs continue to different lengths on the sleeves and yoke, so the branches on the sleeves are longer than the yoke. I like both in their own way and love both designers.
I've always wanted to try knitting a pattern by the petiteknitter, so I'll be casting on the Tuku sweater soon. It will be my first time knitting with Snaeldan yarn as well. Thank you for yet another a lovely video!
The tuku sweater is a wonderful pattern, such fun to try it with new yarn. Enjoy it 🌼
Two festive sweaters that I have seen on other podcasts are the Fallow by Anne Michelle Phelan and one was a test knit Nordic Noel by Anniina Juuti. Another one from the Memory Lane book would be the Wings sweater in a beautiful burgundy with gold or silver beadwork to dress it up.❤🧶
I love the Fallow sweater. I made it for my daughter and it her favourite knit that I’ve made her and I knit for her a lot. 😉
Hi Elise! I have test knitted the Candelaria as well, and I also received the 50% coupon :D For me meeting the deadline was a struggle not only because of small needles and gauge (30 sts per 10 cm), but also because Teti tends to make her garments very short and if you are tall, you are forced to add length, which takes time and yarn (not accounted for in the pattern). I have test knitted for her once before and even though I made the deadline, I ended up with an extremely short garment, which I simply can not wear :) I could have made it longer, but I was afraid I might run out of yarn... In general I think I should be more careful when choosing test knits and pay more attention to expected gauge and timelines :D I have tested for many other designers as well and what I don't like is when there is no feedback from the designer and testers have to decide for themselves what to do next. I have also encountered cases when there is no final pattern (clean version) sent to the testers after the work is done. I have tested for some very widely known designers and multiple times I have not even received a final version of the pattern neither by email nor through Ravelry. They simply asked to link my project to their pattern but I don't actually have the pattern in my library :D So yeah, I also have mixed feelings about testing. I feel that the designers who are just starting their journey are more responsive and actually appreciate their test knitters because they don't have a line of knitters waiting to test their patterns :)
Nice to hear it wasn't just me. I added about 7 cm to the length of the body which took quite a bit of extra time because of exactly what you say. It's a shame that the short deadline means there is less room to adapt a pattern for your own body. The lack of feedback can be frustrating, but I understand if there are a lot of testers but I think a group email at the end is nice. Thank you so much for your comment, do you have any designers you really love to test for? 🌸
Hi! Yeah, what I meant about lack of feedback was when a pattern is uploaded on Google Docs and everyone can comment, but the designer does not join the discussion for days :) In any case, I love knitting for Japanese designers, they are really nice, responsive and ALWAYS give you a final pattern :) Also, I liked test knitting for Moreca Knit, Liv Ulven (Woodland knits), Lotta Lothgren, Anniina Juuti. All beginner designers as well!!! But I must say that in most cases I do not receive an additional pattern for free. Maybe from beginner designers more often, but not from the well known ones. However, I decided it does not bother me as I have way too many patterns in my library and I do not need to add more :D
The summer top would be so pretty on top of a bathing suit maybe? Your test knits are all so lovely!! <3
I have tested for Jennifer too , she is great to deal with and has lovely patterns. I have tested for 1 other designer but there is no chat or group to discuss so it is not so fun
Thanks for this great chat! Very much enjoyed it and appreciated your insights. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I go in testing "spurts" and there is nothing worse than when the deadline sucks the joy out of the project.
I've test knitted a couple of times. Three complete garments (got 50% of yarn, one free pattern and two free patterns) and i have 3 ongoing right now (50% of yarn, free yarn on one and one which i dont know). I do it because i would like to knit them anyway but i really like that designers offer something in return! I feel like the one you got with that short deadline, advanced knitting, small gauge and almost finished, should absolutely have gotten a free pattern!
I appreciate your candor-I know that is really hard to do as there’s always the potential for backlash. I admire Teti’s patterns and I test knit a lot, but I’ve never applied for any of hers as I don’t feel like she gives a sufficient amount of time. As many folks have pointed out, such a short timeline also makes it very unlikely that the larger sizes will be able to be tested fully (or at all), since those take longer, and 4 weeks is already a deadline only speedy knitters with yarn on hand or the ability to go purchase some in person can hope to accomplish. If that’s the case, then one is only giving lip service to size inclusivity. Even if the 50% off coupon was because you didn’t finish by the deadline, it’s still a slap in the face. I would also be hurt by that. I’be done many test knits, both for just starting out designers and big names. There are some designers whose tests I love, and I’ll test knit just about anything for them if I have the time because they’re just that great to work with (I’m thinking of Stephanie Lotven of Tellybean Knits). My only really bad experience was with a brand new designer who just didn’t really know what she was doing and the pattern hadn’t been tech edited or even proofread, and then as I got further in, I discovered some parts of the pattern weren’t even complete yet, and then the designer took a while to respond to questions and at first wanted to do everything via email, even though she had created a thread on Ravelry where testers were trying to help each other out. It was a mess. I did get a wearable garment out of it (because I’m a fairly advanced knitter and could figure things out on my own), but I swore off testing for that designer till she had more experience.
Thank you for your input 🌸 I agree with your point about larger sizes and short deadlines, it isn't truly being inclusive particularly if smaller sizes feel like they're rushing. Thank you for naming designers you love to test for, I'll make a note and look out for their future test calls 🌿
With your test knit for Teti, was the 50% discount maybe because you didn't meet the deadline? I recently tested for her, and it was even just a mini scarf and I got a free pattern of my choice for it. But honestly, I also wanted to apply for that test of the blouse, but 4 weeks is really short for a long-sleeve garment, so I didn't.
Hi, the message appears to have been sent in mass so unsure if that's the case, though it's super off putting to think a designer would segregate reward based on whether the very tight deadline was met. Although I missed the initial deadline I did complete before the release date.
@@PurlsBeforeThyme. I completely agree, I'm just trying to understand how it came about, I mean those two tests happened around the same time, so I would expect that also the approach to rewards didn't change in the meantime.
I have gotten stricter about the tests I do, deadlines giving generous amount of time, patterns I would be sad not to have, designers get put on my blacklist for testing for any reason I see fit (luckily only 2) the good definitely out weight the bad I have 3 designers I just live to test for any day if the week they could ask me and I would do it
That seems like a good strategy. It's always nice to have designers who you just know that testing is going to be a pleasure 😄
Yes, this just sounds like the designer saw the test knitters as a potential source of income at the same time that they were providing free labour and feedback. That would explain why she selected so many - 70 pattern sales at half price equals 35 pattern sales, so about €280 🤨
Thank you for being so honest! I like testknitting, because it is nice when you can help a designer to make the pattern even better. But for anyone considering testknitting: don't expect anything back! My experience with testknitting is: I never received a coupon code to buy yarn with a discount. Some let you pick one of their other designs for free, but most don't (no, nothing, not even 50% off!). I knitted a testknit last April for a very famous designer, who never responded to any questions. We had to finish our sweaters within 4 weeks, and we still haven't gotten any feedback about the release date of the pattern! So enjoy testknitting for the process, just don't have any expectations.
That's so sad when the designer doesn't respond. I've been lucky with most of my test that the designer gets very involved and responds to comments and questions 🌸I think I'm going to take a bit of a test knitting break for a while to finish some WIPs (famous last words haha) 🌼🌾☀️
That ranunculus has me feeling so inspired to try one with some brushed alpaca silk in my stash! The light blue is so beautiful 😍
A shame you had this happen with your last test knit (although that sweater is gorgeous). Even with 70 test knitters it’s not a great hardship for the designer to at least give a free pattern. Thank you for an honest insight into your experience. I personally have never test knitted as the pressure doesn’t appeal! I’m all for having an easy and relaxing time knitting 😊
Hello Elise! I enjoy test knitting. I’ve mainly tested patterns for Jenna Kostet because I adore the folk inspired colorwork patterns that she designs ✨
Her designs are stunning! Lucky you, it must be so fun to test such beautiful things🌼🩷
Hi from Qld Australia ? Do i detect an aussie accent ?
Hi! Nearly, I'm half South African so I have a few little twangs from there 🌼
Both of your tops turned out beautiful. I'm glad you were able to find the right mohair to match your pumpkin color for the bookclub cardigan. I hope you have enough yarn! I think you need a higher contrast for your Hey, Sailor top. I like the idea of lavender and mint, but I think your two shades were too similar.❤🧶
Cute
Hello here from Arizona, first time here!
Welcome!! I imagine it's quite a bit warmer there than it is here in Norway ☀️
I liked the look of the little Breton pastry. And that undertoe triangle shawl.
I'm american but im 1/8 Norwegian and got try on a family friend's bunad when i was 18. I felt so special and fancy and loved
Awww, that's so nice! They do make you feel special!
This was fantastic! Loved learning about this traditional dress and all that goes into it.
This was such an interesting video-thanks for walking us through your bunad!
Ow the dye lot experience 😢... I feel for you!
Thank you for sharing your bunad with us. It was so interesting to learn about. Yours is beautiful! I live in the US and we don't have traditional dress like this. My family is from Germany but we don't have the traditional dress in my family. Quite a few of the outward traditions fell away during the World Wars when there was an effort in the part of the US my family lived in to "hide" or downplay their German heritage so as not to be seen as the enemy. (It was a weird time in history and sadly we lost some fun traditions)
You look lovely in your traditional costume!
So beautiful!!! Interceding to learn about this Norwegian tradition.
Lovely video! Perfect energy for lying under an umbrella in a drizzle, on a porch in Italy, savouring late summer and the transition to autumn...
Sounds idyllic 🌾
Pretty design!! Congratulations! 🙌🏻🧶🙌🏻
Congratulations!!!
Since it is really cool in the mornings in Northern Canada where I live, I've been wearing my shawls on my commute to work. I love your suggestions.
Wonderful! Do you have any favourite patterns?
@@PurlsBeforeThyme. I'm hand spinner using my own yarn and usually free hand my shawls. I haven't actually used a written pattern for them.
I miss Nicole’s podcasts too 😔 You have a very similar manner to Nicole and your makes are lovely 😍
@@janinef66 that's a huge complement, thank you. I miss her too 🌸
I am so excited about your scallop cardigan and can't wait for it! Already planning wools I dream to carry it out it in. Beautiful, enjoy the process.
such beautiful shade of orange of the new yarn! Love it. Wonderful podcast overall!
Thank you, I can't wait to cast on!
