December sleigh ride 2024 Maggie and Bell
December 21 2024 taking the sleigh down to pick up the evergreen tree. Bell is the right hand mare and Maggie is the left hand mare. It had been several months since they had been driven. Maggie is the less experienced mare -driven maybe a dozen times. Bell is the dominate mare of the two as you can see in her body language.

This small area has never been plowed before. The last seconds of the video you can see the tractor rise a bit as the plows dig in to something. Not being as steadfast videographer as i would like to be, it ends with a shake as I inhale in fear. All ended well though!

4 year old Percheron Gelding -Tater. After having the summer off to grow and mature (and avoid to the biting flies!) he is driven in the training cart and also ridden for the first time. Please ignore the lack of equitation of the person ridding- (she hasn't been in the saddle in about 15 years)

Neighbor Brian Bessel plowing part of a field for us using his John Deere tractor and 3 bottom plow. This area was pasture for the past 30 years or more (first for cows then for horses) and due to the numerous rock walls in our area the odds of hitting a big rock were fair to good. Using percheron mares to disc a new garden plot. The mares are a mother daughter team - they are working hard as there was alot (probably too much) compost to work into the soil.

We purchased a set of bobsled runners from a gentleman in Ohio. He told us that they were used to transport hay to market about 30 miles away in the early 1900's. We replaced the pole that came with the runners as it was in poor condition as well as the hand wrought hammer strap and pin. The front set of runners was missing the original bolster and king pin.

I started this video on mute and the closed caption indicated that music was playing. That surprised me so I turned up the volume to hear what song... And it was just the rhythm of the harness and equipment that registered as music.

Ok, how much syrup do you get from the sap?
This year we boiled about 300 gallons of sap to get the 6 or 7 gallons of syrup
