    Utter newb question, and I am not a pilot, but am very interested in flying, and how it all works. How is slipping (which this doesn't really look like from other videos I have watched) differ from crabbing, or are they variants of the same physics? This looked more like a crab (and a slight one at that) than a slip. Again, based solely on watching other videos of crabbing and slipping.

    • @NortheastVintage
      @NortheastVintage 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the question. Crabbing is pointing the nose of the airplane into the wind when approaching the runway with a crosswind. This allows you to stay on the centerline of the runway while the wind is trying to blow you sideways. You then typically transition into a slip just before you touch down to get the wheels straight to avoid side loading the airplane when the wheels touch. Slipping, which looks like crabbing, is putting the airplane into a sideways position, nose down, to lose altitude at a faster pace. The whole point is to increase aerodynamic drag. This technique is used by airplanes without flaps to increase drag by exposing the side of the airplane to the wind. When drag increases, your descent rate increases as well. I think the most surprising aspect of flying to non pilots is the work needed to get the plane down. One might naturally think this happens easily but it’s most often the cause for poor landings. Planes naturally want to fly and you need to work to get them ready to land - reducing airspeed and altitude. I hope this is helpful.

    Nicely done. In summer mid day or in the mountains or with two people, level in low ground effect energy can easily be 50% of total kinetic energy (fuel, ground effect, down drainage egress, etc.) available. I guess down drainage is actually potential energy of altitude, but I convert it to kinetic. I taught zero timers in the 7AC at Ag Flight and in the C-140 at Monte Vista Colorado at 7600.' I did not teach Vx or Vy as neither was appropriate. I taught when pulling back on the stick doesn't give us the climb we wish, try pushing instead. Nice airplane. It likes to takeoff fast and land slow. It can be landed slow enough that if we roll only a few feet first, a ground loop will not hurt anything. Lets the instructor safely teach dynamic proactive rudder movement, walk the rudder pedals, to stay ahead of the airplane. We're better when we move.

    looks like a decent project bus. Great starting point. a white vw logo on the front would look good.

  • @SanDiego_VDubLife
    @SanDiego_VDubLife ปีที่แล้ว

    I watched your other video first. This bus is cool man. Love it. Great condition. A lot of the busses I see on youtube are sooooo rusted but you have a solid foundation. Here we go with my opinion. I'm about saving money cuz I don't have very much, but if you have a good size bank account spend away buddy. If not do the minimum and enjoy it and make upgrades along the way. That will make the fun last a lot longer and you will get to enjoy using it along the way. I noticed you skipped over that massive hole behind the passenger seat. I'm not sure about that step if it's stock, I couldn't see the trailer hitch, but also not stock. That huge tank is not stock and either is that seat. I saw the engine is not seized so I would just do top end repairs and run it until it fully dies and then you can mess with the bottom end. Oh keep the patina if possible. you won't find original paint busses very often so run it if possible. let me know what you thought of the ebay paint, how close was it? Wolfsburg west sells some colors, but I also bought some from another guy who custom mixes paint. It's a little over priced, but worth it. It was like $50 a can plus fees.

    • @NortheastVintage
      @NortheastVintage ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I got the $35 can from Paint My Ride on eBay. Seems a good match, but with the fading of the stock paint, it obviously stands out. That said, it looks better than rust until I can get around to replacing sheet metal and body panels. It made it, as my GF says, a 20 footer! 😂

  • @SanDiego_VDubLife
    @SanDiego_VDubLife ปีที่แล้ว

    well, welcome to vdub life. cool ride you got there and some awesome work you have already done. sounds like you wrench so all the mechanical work will be in good hands. Vdubs have their personality so you will have fun learning all about this bus. You probably have previous vw experience but not sure. As far as that engine, it's all up to how much work, time and money you want to put into it. That rust inside the engine does not look good. There should be none in there, so moisture got in there somehow which is bad, but these engines are strong and it will probably run. something might fail on the internals, but the only way to find out is to open it up. Once you do that you might as well put new parts. Before you go throwing thousands of dollars at it though I would probably just do the bare minimum and see if the case is worth putting money into. Once you have to replace that we are talking a few thousand dollars in upgrades. I know because I am in the predicament right now and just trying to get a few more miles out of my current engine until I have to start from scratch or at least a cheap rebuild until I save lots for my ultimate engine. Good luck buddy.

    • @NortheastVintage
      @NortheastVintage ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! All new to aircooled! Going to split the case and probably do a full rebuilt kit from AA Performance. Other than obvious cracks, what should I look for in terms of the case? Spun bearings, etc?

    • @SanDiego_VDubLife
      @SanDiego_VDubLife ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NortheastVintage cracks yes also the lifter bores should be snug. Make sure all the oil galleys are not clogged. The head bolts should not be stripped or pulled. Make sure mating surfaces are flat and that the crank journal seats are flat. You might need to align bore it or get a thrust cut. If you go bigger you will need to machine for clearance of crank and pistons. For engine stuff check out VW Darrin and EZGZ. They got good stuff but they may contradict each other so it’s a lot of opinion and you gotta decide. I’m learning on the engine side of things and have never rebuilt the bottom end but planning to soon.

So Casper came into the pictures in the middle of another bug restoration…Frankenstein… I have been working both at the same time. Not an easy task by myself.
