Texas Power Paddle safety hack.
มุมมอง 1046 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Texas Power Paddle units have a flaw, which in my opinion is careless, and potentially fatal. The rudder mounted motors can make for abrupt and unexpected turns that can easily tip a distracted boater, but even the most experienced kayaker is prepared for the unexpected. Even at it's slower speed, if you fall off your kayak you WILL see it sail away without you. Here is a simple and inexpen...

    appreciate the review. You have to stop and wonder when there are very few reviews on a product out for a few years and most of the reviews are from the company and very few customers. Good products get numerous TH-cam reviews by customers. There is obviously a problem here with TPP.

    Thank you for this video, I found it very helpful. In fact, I was convinced that I was going to buy an OT PDL120 after watching this because of all the fantastic points you made in favor of the OT. I ended up doing a kayak fishing charter on the ocean in Newport, RI. The kayak supplied was a 2022 Hobie Outback and I found it to be incredibly easy to navigate, supremely stable in washer machine conditions, so easy to propel and the seat without a cushion to be so very comfortable. I spent 5 hours in it landing fish and pedaling around and was not tired or feeling any ill effects from the seat. I was shocked and highly impressed. All that said I still was thinking the OT was for me because I expected it to be similar to the Hobie. So I went to a dealer who sells Hobie and OT so I could demo the OT. What I found was the OT took significantly more effort to propel, was slower and the bar in the back of the seat was just awful not matter how I adjusted. I was simply uncomfortable and my legs where not liking the bike motion no matter where I set the seat. After 20 minutes I wanted off the OT. So I bought the Hobie. All your points good/bad on the OT are correct and well stated. Same with the Hobie points good/bad. In the end, either yak is a winner depending on each person and my lesson learned was try before you buy because until you do it's impossible to know for sure. Thanks for putting the time in!

My first motor went out after two years l sent to them and they replaced it with a new J2 motor for 1 hundred and 29 dollars. Bixpy is a great company said in most cases they can repair them at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them ,they even sent me shipping labels to send it to them.

    your dealer is 100% correct. The exact thing just happened to me. I stupidly tightened the back idler cable because the drums (elephant ears) were very loose but then it pulled up that back sprocket and the bearings were exposed. What happens is that idler cable stretches over time and instead of tightening it you should replace instead.

    • @buildingcodepro9237
      @buildingcodepro9237 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. Something else I noticed... EVERY time I go out in the Outback, I come home with water in the hull. Not a lot, but maybe half to one gallon or so. That's "common" in the outback, while the Old Town is bone dry. So far it hasn't been a real problem, but considering my batteries and the occasional wilderness trip with gear in the hull, it's another tick in the box for an Outback win.

  • @RonMTube

    Can't fault TPP for needing to make a profit as they have to cover a lot of cost for engineering, product research, testing, support, warranty, etc. That said, I thank you for this discovery. I plan to build a clone of the TPP system from scratch.

    Just pick up yak attacks rail part for your old town , and pick up hobies circle hole cover to access your back hatch area to screw and mount the rails with nuts and screws! Just a thought. It’s definitely possible to take your old town out crabbing withe traps to mount down.

  • @jkaas65
    @jkaas65 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With the location of the transducer on the Old Town does side imaging work. I know that is one of the reasons for the Hobie Transducer placement to allow it to be below the hull so SI can work.

    The Center Pin will wear out and bearings will if its too loose. Also the stock grease is not very good. Get really good Marine grease and redo the main pin, roller and the two pins by the chain. It will run much smoother. Wash with fresh water with good pressure to get rid of sand and debris.

    I have 3 TPP gen1's they all came with a cut off switch and they were one of the first ones sold. not sure how yours isn't there. But I do want to thank you for the blue robotics info it has really helped as TPP prices are crazy. I got a new unit for $200 and installing it now. The old motors it looks like the rotor is the problem the coating on the inside is missing in spots and the magnets start to rust then seize up the unit. I'll be buying a new rotor to see if I can repair this one. I have always rinsed and used the right lube after each use, but I can see now that isn't enough. My suggestion now is a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water and let the motor run slowly to completely flush the system then drain a lube after each use. after finding the t200 info I found on thingiverse a 3d print for both the prop and the weed guard trying those as I type but you have to look it up t200 not TPP I'm still looking for the other items if anyone has info on the controller, cable ends, or motor mounts

    The Old Town is heavier…

    • @buildingcodepro9237
      @buildingcodepro9237 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is, but not with the drive removed. And either way, the old town is easier to maneuver on the ground without damage where the hobie rudder is extremely vulnerable. Also the little rope on the hobie handle wears out. I think the ground handling definitely goes to the old town, hands down. Remember, I own and use both, on the same vehicle and the exact same locations and conditions, both ramps and long foot paths on kayak carts.

    Not questioning you but my own experience was better. Mine came with a red kill switch with coiled cable, don't know why yours doesn't. Sorry you had bad experience .I had no trouble getting answer within a day from either the owner or customer service. Have had one for 2 years on my Outback use it in Texas marsh twice week. No problems. Every few months you gotta take appart and clean motor but do maintenance on my outboard boat too. Company states : "On full throttle 120 minutes, low throttle or combine w pedaling, average user gets 6-8 hours". So do not claim all day. I usually go out 4-5 hours use it mid to full and still have 45% battery. Do not work for them and paid retail. If you lube use marine grade lithium grease. WD40 is good for door hinges but has rusted some of mine. They have new model motor for heavy weed areas. Hope you find a system that works for you. Friend has new Old Town Epedal 132 and an Autopilot 120 he loves.

    I own a Native pdl chinese clone. It is been 5 years of harcore use, camping and offshore fishing, out of the box, not so good, but with some mods, it is a beast. I did the ("car engine) oil convertion"on the pedal drive, it is a game changer if you are able to do it on the old town, highly recommend you. O got a "weed guard" that a guy 3D printed in Australia, and it solved the problem with the fishing lines and everything else snags in between the propeller. I does wrap aroung the propeller, but it is easy to clear out. I tried a hobbie once and it is great, but personally I Ipreffer the circle motion of the pedal drive, than the hobbie straight pushes. I think it is a deal breaker that hobbie hulls has that many crack reports on the hull, that freaks me out, cause it is a very expensive kayak, and hull toughness is one the first things you need. I mean a have a chinese Yak that is well abused for years... no hull issues whatsoever.
