    I bought 5 of these Gamma lids from menards. Every one of them was not air tight. If water can get in there , then so can air. I took them back to the store and bought 2 new ones. one of the lids was on a bucket with pet food in it sitting outside. It rained lightly out, and water seeped in on one whole side of the bucket getting the feed inside all wet. So all these years I thought thee lids were the cats meow.....but they are not. They work ok for inside your home but now outside.

      If you were able to bury a water sealed drum with a lid it would work better. It is best to keep them in a light proof box with the wood shaving in a cool place. They will rot faster in damp warm environments. If your environment stays warm all year. Just harvest and replant. Then you can dig up what you want when you want.

    Can I use sawdust to replace pine chip?

    • @ruralhomesteader6650
      @ruralhomesteader6650 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you knew the sawdust was pure wood, chemical free and not a fresh unaged wood then I would think it would be possible. You may just have to fluff the sawdust. The potatoes don't need to be buried in sawdust to the point no air can get to it.

Is there a way to protect the grass from the poop so it can still grow and feed my chickens? And do you know where chickens prefer to make their nests? We keep finding their nests in mounds of tree branches, I ask because I'd like to know where your chickens like to make their nests when free ranging.

    • @ruralhomesteader6650
      @ruralhomesteader6650 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't think so. They most likely were cured prior to being shipped to the store. I wouldn't wash them before putting them in the shavings as long as they look fairly clean. If they had mud or dirt on them, I would let them dry and brush off the extra dirt off before putting them in the shavings. But not wash them. Hope this helps

      If you live in the city or suburbs, you can find pine shavings at pet stores. It's used for bedding for smaller animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. The bags will be much smaller and cost a lot more though. I think you can find small bags at Walmart too. Find a Tractor Supply type store if you can.
