Jhay & Shaye Wedding

If you went to the beach but didn't post about it on Facebook or on Instagram, did you really go to the beach? If you were married but didn't actually post it in social media, did you really get married? My dear angel in heaven, anak, Mahal, we better face people's "judgment" now than BEFORE THE LORD. Thank you all dear bashers for the incessant persecution! We can only remain steadfast in the ...

Almost drowned by poverty, Almer was saved by the Sisters of Mary. He did well academically and strove harder to help his family. Due to hard work and competency, promotions (along with salary increases) followed. From being the Third to Second Officer, he became a Ship Captain in December of 2016. He will always be grateful to the Sisters of Mary & its benefactors who are instrumental in his s...

1991 - 1998 In 1991, the pioneering graduates of SMS Manila (at that time, they were from batch 1990 and batch 1991), decided to form associations that will serve the graduates. One association catered to boys - then called Sisters of Mary Alumni Association (SMAA), and the other catered to girls which was then called Sisters of Mary Alumnae Association. Both associations were able to lay the foundation which has become the precedent for the succeeding group of organizers. In early part of 1996, another group with enthusiasm from the Batch 1990 and Batch 1991 led by Mr. Joseph Justiniani (batch 1991), continued the endeavor. On August 19, 1996 in the occasion of 11th Foundation Day, graduates were called upon to gather and to elect new set of officers for SMAA (boys). It was then that Mr. Albin Fernandez (batch 1991), was elected as President while Mr. Georgie Moral as Vice-President for internal affairs, and Mr. Ronaldo De Guia as Vice-President for external affairs. The two Vice-Presidents were also from batch 1991. Immediately after the election, a constitution and by-laws patterned after the previous were drafted and approved by the concerned parties. During this period, numerous projects were successfully carried out in partnership with the SMAA (girls) which was then led by Ms. Seanell del Rosario. One of the successful projects was the alumni-sponsored Mass Wedding. More than five couples received the Sacrament of Matrimony and the occasion was held at Sta. Mesa Manila. From then on, more graduates became accustomed to actively participate. 2000 - 2002 In the latter part of 1999, Mr. Georgie Moral became the next President of SMAA (boys) and Mr. Marcos Gomez, batch 1992, became the Vice-President. In pursuit of carrying out the alumni's objectives and in partnership with SMAA (girls), Mr. Georgie Moral spearheaded the construction of bust-size replica of Fr. Al, and the construction of Fr. Al's Children's Park which was inaugurated in March 2001. In 2001, the alumni successfully held two Alumni Cup Basketball Tournament, an inter-company basketball competition. Also in this year was the registration of both SMAA's in Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as legal entities. Fundraising projects were separately conducted by each association to finance its respective projects. In 2002, under the leadership of Mr. Georgie Moral, the idea of Mr. Jhvn Mariano (batch 1991) of creating a website for the alumni was acted upon. He then called a meeting, and one of those who responded was Mr. Alexander Flores (batch 1991), who then initiated the very worthwhile project. Mr. Alexander Flores conducted another meeting to get to the bottom of website development. He then organized a group of IT Specialists who volunteered for the construction of the website. He also looked for someone who could initially sponsor the cost of website development. With the financial help of Mr. Jhvn Mariano, batch 1991, the project started rolling. Initially, the website's name was www.smaa.org.ph to reflect the association that was existing then. Meetings after meetings and mostly with the help of Mr. Oliver Rombaoa (batch 1994) and Ms. Bonnalyn Evangelista (batch 1998), a website was launched in August 2002. The website then was not interactive -- no forum, no chat. It was just purely static, but the message of the website sent waves across. This was the start of the new beginning for the alumni association. 2002-2004 In December 2002, a proposal to unify both SMAA (boys) and SMAA (girls) came up. Fresh initiatives coming from the officers of both associations (Mr. Georgie Moral as President of Sisters of Mary Alumni Association, Ms. Maricor Dechosa as President of Sisters of Mary Alumnae Association) and from Sr. Riza with Ms. Amelita Clemente as the adviser, led to something more unifying. Thus, in the same month, an election of a new set of officers was held. For the very first time in several years, a unified alumni association was born. With the help of Atty. Adonis Sulit, batch 1992, who drafted the new By-Laws and recommended to change the name of the association to avoid complexity of registering anew in Securities and Exchange Commission, the Alumni of the Sisters of Mary School, Inc. or ASMSI came into existence. The election put Mr. Alexander Flores as the first ASMSI President. To strengthen the relationship and to encourage improved alumni participation, Kuya Alex first focused to utilize the best and efficient medium of communication to reach out to all the graduates of the Sisters of Mary. He pushed towards the realization of a website which is dynamic and interactive. He then changed the domain name from www.smaa.org.ph to www.asmsi.org.ph so as to simply reflect the unified association. Ranel Viana (batch 1995) and an IT administrator, helped in hosting the new domain name for free. Strengthening the bonding of the alumni was foremost in Kuya Alex's mind. He thought that the association can't stand in its own if the members don't have a strong bond with each other. Activities such as swimming, parties and recollections among others created strong camaraderie and rapport among graduates. 2004-2006 Then in August 2004, Atty. Adonis Sulit became the next president of ASMSI. In his stint did we see enormous improvements in the association which included the registration of ASMSI in Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a non-profit organization. He further created a body that would help the ASMSI organize events through the utilization of batch representatives, where each batch would serve as host for every year's event. He laid the foundation for a more procedural way of decision-making through board resolutions and strict adherence of all members to ASMSI charter. He included in the bylaws the hiring of a full-time Executive Director to act as implementing officer of the plans and programs of the association. Sharon Dizon (Batch 1996) served as the Executive Director for ASMSI (from 2006-2013).
2006-2008 In September 2006, a new ASMSI president, the incumbent Ms. Eden Cabrera, batch 1993 was elected. Her challenge as a President was to raise more ASMSI funds that will help finance its projects. Her initial move was the forming of a cooperative for ASMSI. The initial project under it was the setting up of “Eat Matters Canteen” at Canlubang, Laguna in February 2007. It’s so good to note that the ASMSI Development Cooperative was finally registered last July 05, 2007 under the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) with registration No. LGA-6991. It was also at this time that ASMSI handled the micro-loan program for the newly graduated working boys and girls. The financial assistance that the Sisters used to give to the working graduates became ASMSI’s responsibility. The welfare program for graduates through Micro-loan for small enterprise was also started. During this term, and with the help and initiative of ASMSI web team, a new and better website was launched. The newly-developed website makes it easier for graduates to interact. It contains alumni database obtained from SMS wherein only bonafide alumni can log-in and search for fellow alumni using the members' directory tool. With this tool, reaching out to any graduate has never been this easy, provided however, that the alumni have logged in and updated their latest profile. ASMSI also started rendering a more significant career orientation/pre-employment seminar workshop among graduating class. Its objective is for the students to be equipped with practical pointers in their future work places or schools. In its little ways, ASMSI continued giving out small donations (in cooperation with other graduates) for special SMS occasions like Sisters Feast Day, Mother’s Day Celebration, Children’s Birthday, Grand Marian procession and a lot more. Outreach activities (however limited) were also done like donations in kind to the victims of typhoons (in Bicol) and to Sisters of the Little Mission for the Deaf & the Deaf Community: Youth and Adult Ministry. In an effort of extending help in the process of our founder’s beatification and canonization (in cooperation with Fr. Al’s Commission Office or FACO), several activities like Spiritual Bouquet for Fr. Al, Benefit Lunch project for a Cause, regular Recollections and Retreats were conducted to spiritually partake in our mission of bringing Fr. Al into the Altar of God in the company of other Saints. Several other fund raising activities were also held to help in this cause. 2009-2013 The Election of new set of Officers from among the Board of Trustees last October 26, 2008, put the young, resourceful and enthusiastic Mr. Alejo San Buenaventura (Batch 1999) as the 2009-2010 ASMSI President. Continuing the endeavors of ASMSI and the previous trustees, Kuya Al’s team added in their list of projects the Alumni Handbook, the ASMSI Website re-development (with Paypal / Credit Card Donation), FACFI Website Development (with Paypal / Credit Card Donation), SMS Philippines and Brothers of Christ websites, Purchase of our own ASMSI ID Maker, reviving alumni's participation in various sports activities and tournaments to build camaraderie and teamwork and help support various ASMSI projects, raising of Bayanihan Fund, Welfare & Development Program for graduates through loans, other social activities for graduates such as the Summer Outing, and the Re-gathering of Alumni every 3rd Sunday of the month for socio-spiritual activities, March to Silver, March to Million campaign was launched also as one of the fund-raising activities among others for the benefit of Fr. Al's Children Foundation, Inc. (FACFI) and ASMSI's Bayanihan Fund. For Kuya Al, it is with enthusiasm & genuine service that he would joyfully fulfill his role together with all of us. It’s definitely with a heart no personal interest. Due to a non-quorum election in September 2010, through a Board Resolution and persuasion of other Sisters to continue his service, Al and the rest of the officers like Zeny Villapando (Vice President), Elizabeth Nebres (Secretary), Susana Montano (Treasurer) and Mark Mojica (P.R.O) extend office until December 31, 2013 His active participation, leadership example and untiring support pave the way for the unification of graduates of Sta. Mesa, Cavite and Cebu campuses thru the goal of moving towards one direction. The ASMSI International Conference (AIC) in 2010 in Cavite and AIC 2011 in Cebu, initiated by Jhun Mariano (Batch 1991) and Wendell Castro (Batch 1995) together with the officers and active members of ASMSI - UAE Chapter in cooperation with ASMSI - Main have been instrumental in achieving that goal. ASMSI International Convention (AIC) plays a major role in unifying the alumni from Sta. Mesa, Cavite, Cebu and alumni abroad. The vision of the Sisters of Mary School, Inc. (ASMSI), although futuristic, specifically states that the organization hopes to become a future donor of the Sisters of Mary. As such, ASMSI continues to fulfill its responsibility by gathering and reaching out to the graduates with the hope that such activities will continue to evoke a spirit of gratitude and generosity of the alumni. The growth of ASMSI is evident in the formation of different alumni chapters both in the Philippines and abroad. The growing numbers of alumni and chapters though, posed complex challenges to the organization especially between ASMSI Cebu and ASMSI Manila/Cavite. The urgency of a more coordinated, more responsive and well-structured organization calls for united alumni. One of the milestones of the AIC is the declaration of ASMSI Main as the mother organization with its officers coming from ASMSI-Cavite, ASMSI-Cebu and ASMSI International (alumni abroad). The need to comply with all government reportorial requirements pushed ASMSI to do its best. With the legal assistance of Atty. Adonis Sulit, the yearly filing of GIS & Financial Statements to BIR & SEC has been regularized since 2011 and 2012. Pending amends from 2004 have also been settled. The year 2013 convened with the First ASMSI International Convention, with a bigger role of strengthening the graduates both local and abroad through Chapter Accreditation. Active participation among Batch Representatives and Chapters locally and abroad is more so encouraged. The next election of Officers for the unified ASMSI was held during the 1st ASMSI International Convention on August 3-4, 2013 in Silang, Cavite where the composition of the Board of Trustees now comes from ASMSI - Cavite, ASMSI - Cebu and ASMSI - International Chapters. (ASMSI History: 1991-2013 written by Sharon Dizon and Alexander Flores).
