Jerry Hadley: June 16, 1952 - July 18, 2007 Jerry Hadley was a leading American tenor for almost 20 years with a voice that could be rich and dramatic or light and lively. He excelled in roles ranging from Puccini's La bohème and Mozart's Don Giovanni to Broadway. In 1996, Hadley commissioned composer Daniel Steven Crafts to write music for poems by Carl Sandburg. The work "The Song and the Slo...

    No screeching, no bellowing, just gorgeous golden notes performed exquisitely. Too many opera singers reach beyond the listeners comfort. This is just gorgeous. Perfectly rendered to its maximum effect.

    I still shed tears every time I hear Jerry Hadley and still ask why, why, why did he have to end his life so young. He had that glorious voice and snuffed it out. So terribly sad and such a waste.

    his technique was fantastic until he started listening to coaches and trying to sing with constriction. Hadley from 80 to 92 was a beast and had fantastic technique. He changed. Listen to more recordings before before you speak on technique.

    Jerry Hadley was and always will be my favorite tenor. His voice had such heart and it's breaks my heart to know that he chose to silence that beautiful instument himself. I can only image the mental pain and suffering he was endured to make that decision. God bless his soul.

    @fashionablesixties Unfortunately, there was more going on at the time than just a change to his career... my ex-voice teacher dated him while they were in college. She saw him in Paris only a few months prior to his passing -- he took she and her husband to dinner, and of course tickets to the opera he was performing at the time.. He was a wonderful, passionate singer...

    Having see the original Broadway production with the original cast as well as several cast changes, let me say that I have never heard "Johanna" performed with such artistry, real feeeling, and beauty of voice. If only Jerry Hadley could have overcome his problems. His loss was a loss to all real music lovers.

    @Tenor1947 Jerry remains my forever friend, and I am touched by the above comments; there were elements of Hamlet in much of Jerry's persona. Incidentally, he told me he was criticized for singing that high C in Boheme, but he did so because it is written that way. Jerry was a consummate artist with a gentle, kindly soul. I recall seeing a lady distraught at having failed to meet Sam Ramey backstage. Jerry introduced himself and asked if he would do instead. Both she & I were touched.

    I first heard Jerry's voice when I was a super in the 2nd act of La Boheme in 1982, and I fell in love with that voice immediately. When I got to know him, I discovered that his soul was as beautiful as his voice, and we remained close friends until his untimely death. We will not see or hear his like again, and those of us who knew him well, will miss him forever. L.F.

    How could you compare the voice of an opera singer with that of a non-singer or a pop singer? Just can't be compared. In my humble opinion, Jerry Hadley gave up too soon. To him it was either the big stage at the Met or nothing. So sad. One can feel his emotion when he sang. Jerry Hadley, RIP.

  • @fashionablesixties
    @fashionablesixties 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @moh672 I agree with you that Jerry did bring true emotion into his singing. Saw him perform at the Met and thought he could have continued singing anywhere but the Met. He did not have to kill himself. Yes, a cautionary the Met does chew tenors and spit them out at will. Rest in peace, Jerry. You brought a lot of joy to your fans.

    @seektheforce Glenmed used that photos in two of his Papageno arias - one for D F-D and later for another baritone - maybe Walter Berry or Hermann Prey - but this sure looks like Hadley

    @musiq7203 Ugh... IF the voice is placed correctly -- meaning free and resonating in the proper places -- a singer doesn't "have" or "not have" vibrato. It occurs naturally, and the singer lets it happen. An opera singer with a very heavy vibrato or wide vibrato generally has gotten out of the habit of letting the voice float on the air. It can be corrected... and it's timbre, not "tambre".....

  • @moh672
    @moh672 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @favreg17 He is a tenor, in fact this is transposed UP in order to put it in the meat of Jerry's voice.

    To be honest, in this "Sondheim Celebration" excerpt, Mr. Hadley sings in G and eventually Ab! This is much much different than the movie version, Eb, and the stage version, F, which was originally changed in the early 1980's once Victor Garber completed his run. The difference here is that the higher this goes, the more emotion you can sense in the piece, I believe. So I agree, wholeheartedly that they cannot be compared, but I they key in which they sing is vitally important.

    Wow, that's wonderful... I only knew Jerry Hadley as a true "leggiero", and for his Mozart renditions, but that's as good. He's just really polyvalent. Not like Pavarotti who excells in this kind of repertoire, but who butchers Mozart, when he tries to sing it... And such feeling and musicality !!!
