Model railways and the real thing
Midland mainline trains ft. Hastings DEMU Thumper #train#railway#britishrailways#trains
1/2 hr visit to the Midland mainline to watch the Thumper unit go by on a special service
About the train.....
Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) that worked on the London Charing Cross - Hastings route under British Rail between 1957 and 1986.
It was subsequently preserved by Hastings Diesels Limited, restored it to its former glory, and returned to main-line operation ten years later, in 1996.
The train is commonly referred to as Unit 1001, as the first “Hastings” DEMU (all six of whose vehicles Hastings own own) was so numbered. Although the train used on outings does include at least one vehicle from the original unit 1001 (actually, in April 2023 with trailer coach 60501 becoming ‘stopped’ with the introduction of 60528, for the first time this now ceases to be true), many of its vehicles are from other units indeed, other trains.

Branch line station - Railway modeling inspiration - Millbrook - Bedfordshire #modelrailway#railways

First opened in 1846 by the Bedford Railway, the station was originally named "Marston", but changed to "Ampthill (Marston)" in 1850 after the nearby village. The opening of a second and more conveniently-sited Ampthill station by the Midland Railway in 1868 on its Midland Main Line gave rise to confusion which was only resolved in 1877 when the original Ampthill station was renamed "Millbrook ...

Just watched the July running session, despite your protests think modelling of layout fantastic.
Great video! I saw her near Harpenden.
This is a very good video in my opinion love the trains and the music 🎉😊
@@Mydogisbetterthanyou_ thanks 😊
@HenrysAdventures it looked and sounded great as it went by, shame the weather was a bit gey for photos, but it was worth going to see
16:44 I had no idea that Jeff Bezos was into model railways...
Great layouts and some good stalls, that's what a fair should look like. Thanks for the video.
@edgein7892 thanks glad you enjoyed the video 👍
I used to see Joe Lock at the Sheredes School Model Railway Exhibition. The sad thing is that the school stopped having the model railway day.
What a brilliant steampunk layout!! I don’t like the fires on it, but it’s brilliant!!
@Madonsteamrailways was a great model, very creative and nice friendly owners too 👍
Nice wartime layout!! My layout could be run as either Walmington-On-Sea or Walmington cum Yealmington. It started life with me as a “Dad’s Army “ layout and, because I bought a sound Class 101 DMU, it’s turned into a heritage railway.
@Madonsteamrailways the war layout was great I was watching it for ages
Another great show!! I wish I knew about it sooner!!
I found Wally at 2:56. He's behind the shed. But the question on my mind is what on Earth is Wally up to behind the shed all on his own ? If the Police were to turn up i'm sure they would be pretty curious as well, answering questions down the local cop shop would be the next place you might find Wally, hhhmmm.
🤣 what is Wally up to I wonder 🤔 Thanks for watching 👍

Another excellent video Mr Rails. Thank you. I'm glad I subscribed!
Thank you for following, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 👍
I always enjoy model railway exhibitions, classic vehicle shows and heritage railways. I worked at the Epping Ongar Railway until last August!!
I keep meaning to visit that railway, I have been on it when it was still operating under London underground on a rail tour with my father in the late 80s Thanks for watching

What an excellent exhibition - plenty of action and good sales - brilliant recording too. Many thanks for uploading this video! 👍
Many thanks!, glad you enjoyed it
Great video and a really good exhibition.....love your show tours. 7:05
Thank you 🙏glad you enjoyed it 🚂🚃
good vid of train show keep up the good vid
Thank you very much!
Mostyn is amazing.
Amazing stuff……thank you for showing
Glad you enjoyed it
Mostyn was spectacular. Great video.
Thanks 👍
Overheard the fellow in charge of the first layout you showed, "Not a lot happens on this layout." Sure enough I went round four times and every time the controller was on the hook! Why does he bother to exhibit? Several other layouts had no action each time I went round. No wonder a large part of your footage was of Mostyn! That layout is terrific. I think too many exhibitors think a spot of static grass and a posh tree mean it's a good layout. In general there were too few layouts. I had to ask at the desk if there was another room to visit. If they had fewer dealers they could have had more layouts. Was there any narrow gauge? Eleven quid to get in and the show guide extra! Cheeky! Anything for children to play with? Nope. The Chinese layout is a good example of interraction - someone out front to engage the public and children and have plenty of trains. I shan't go to this show again. For an example of a really interesting show, they should look at the Bournemouth February Show. That was really excellent. Abingdon in March too. Sorry to be a bore.......
I think the first chap is at the show as the layout was originally a friends who passed away. Also, a lot of the modellers will be wanting to exhibit for a variety of reasons, they don't all need to be interactive. Many are there just to be involved, and show their modelling to others. I've never exhibited but I imagine standing around for 8 hours a day answering people's questions can become quite a bore so kudos for them doing it. Of course, if it bothers you then you could help change it up and build a layout for kids and exhibit it? I've been to the Romsey show and they had a couple of folks do that, it worked really well but of course with less details on the layout 😂😂
I thought it was nice to have a mix of layouts and stands. I agree a lot were small shelf layouts with not a lot happening, but there was a nice variety. a few foreign settings, a few lager and smaller scales too. I think Next year the Railex will be in the main hall with proper aircon and more space, so you'll get more stands and more layouts of significant size. Pregnant wife found it a bit hot in the hall and had to sit down to cool off, but plenty of seating was provided and I got a number of Dart Castings' Monty figures. My Wife wanted the sheepdog figure and chickens! it was a lovely time.
@@_RandomPea I have two layouts which are especially for children to interact with. Both are positioned at dining table height. One is based on Andover shed, which was a joint S R and G W R shed in N gauge. When children are there, we decide which engine is going to be moved to where and we work out which points have to be set to achieve that. They then control the engine, or I do if they don't want to. By doing this they learn that steam engines need coal and water and need turning on the turntable and also that diesels need fuel. My other layouts is HOe , which will be at Steventon on 22nd June, in which the engines interract with the children by first of all hiding because they are shy, then gradually become friends with the little ones, stopping and starting when told to. It is real story telling with small children. When I last exhibited it, I was calling my green engine Edward, but a child said it isn't Edward because he didn't have number 2 on the side. In the end we gave my green engine the child's name, Alfred. He was so pleased.... Both are proper layouts and I always have something moving.
@@John2E0GTU sounds brilliant, and good on you for doing that. Can understand your point about more interest/interactions for kiddys to have a bit of a laugh.
@anthonylulham3473 I found the hall very hot and stuffy now they hold the show in the hall with the low celling
How on earth did you miss Scotland Yard ? Exquisite little shunting layout.
I'll check my raw footage I might have missed some out by mistake whilst editing, I do try not to miss out any layouts
Many thanks for recording & uploading, some nice shots! Like also the fact you’ve filmed a lot of the traders & products, which now can find on Google! 👍🤓 Eddie.
Thanks for watching I do try to cover the trade stalls and demonstrators as they often are missed out in videos I see
Good to have a chance to pause on an excellent video of the show I went to yesterday - thank you
Lovely layouts
Thanks for watching
Very nice sceneries!
A good video with plenty of material that was at the show.
Thanks for a great presentation, I was unable to be there, but your video quality made me feel I was there
Thank you 👍
Great vid depicting such a remote location
Glad you enjoyed it
An excellent presentation, thank you! It’s great to see (and “feel”) what the show was like. We’re unable to attend such events because my wife is in a wheelchair and crowds make it impossible to comfortably view the layouts not to mention those #£&3*”” people that forget that they have a rucksack on their backs!
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanksforwatching, I agree with you about bags, avoiding losing a eye to a backpack is a skill I had to develop going to these shows and the same at preservation railways too
After pre-booking tickets and car parking to save some money, I went with a friend and had an amazing time at the show. Some of the detailed modelling was very impressive as was all the help on hand with the ability to ask plenty of questions too. Pete Waterman was very accessible and his love of trains was there to see. But must say by the Sunday afternoon he and all the others looked well and truly knackered. 👏👏👏
And there is the thing. With millions of quid to hand one could build a nice railway. A very nice one tbh and I have seen first hand how well many superstars live and do not have too many issues on that, but I think some cash could be injected into getting fans to the venues alongside , stuff mega stars do as hobbies, as I find that rather intrusive.
As the owner of St Fayre Rhianne (27.32) can I thank you for your footage of my layout? You got some really good shots. Everything you see (I suppose you could include the operators) is scratch built, mostly from scrap materials. (Definately so in the case of the operators.) Little Cote d'Or No 504, the grey Corpet Louvet, is getting to be something of a film star - she's on just about every film of the layout on youtube.
It was a pleasure to film, thanks for a great layout, I hope to see it out again soon👍
Darrenbury Central. Pete got the record...what a surprise.... money wins again.....
Glad I didn't go! I would be broke now! looks amazing, shame about the excessive car parking charge
Parking is extremely expensive at the nec
Car parking charges is the reason I didn't go. I live not far away from the NEC. It's a disgrace.
It was a great event though - one of the happiest I've exhibited at for a long time. Something for almost everybody.
Park at the train station and walk across to the NEC (a few minutes walk). It's still not cheap but it's quite a bit cheaper than the NEC itself.
Not interested much tbh but perhaps his effort may better have been spent on the real networks?
Good one. Thank You :)
Glad you liked it!
Went on Saturday thought the entrance fee £19.00 was excessive very crowded advertised as model show 95 per cent trains they had a show a few months ago.
35 model railway exhibits and 35 scale model exhibits plus 70 trade stalls in both sides of the hobby. Tell me how that equals 95% railways?!
@petercurrell9344 maybe you should engage with key model world live ... to relay what they missed out ...
If it worked and on time $19.00 entrance fee may be a better deal than a 1 hour trip on British rail do.. were the sandwiches stale to make it more authentic and the toilets blocked up😊
Gauge 0 ?
I can only think the £19.00 fee was because of the cost of hiring the NEC as the venue
thanks for taking the time to look at everything not just railways much appreciated thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Are Hornby going into 009?
I think the 009 was part of the hornby magazine stand they were all together, I think hornby should as its increased popularity, but they seem to be concentrating on TT
@@greasyrails Ah!! I thought it was the Hornby stand rather than that of the magazine of the same name.
@@Madonsteamrailwaysthe magazine is produced by Key Publishing and they have zero connection with Hornby Railways. They just license the name for the magazine
I found myself in your video. Was a great show, glad I was there.
Thanks for coming
That was really good. Let's those who couldn't go see and feel what it was like 🎉
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it, I do try to capture the feel and look of the show as well as the exhibits
@@greasyrails you did very well
Great upload, thanks for a comprehensive look around this show. Much appreciated 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
How long does the "muzak" last, or do I just go to a more adult video?
Looks like you met the Yeah man.
As usual the modelling was superb but it was disappointing that several of the major suppliers appeared to decide it wasn't cost effective for them to attend (Hornby, Dapol). With the closure of Hattons and other shops (my two local shops have both closed) it's a bit concenting that the hobby may be going through a purple patch.
I felt the show had less of a buzz to it this year maybe it was a result of the loss of some traders missing the show
Not unexpected. Brexit has increased import duties and taxes. China has increased their prices. Add in extreme energy costs, inflation, the highest taxes since WW2, low salary/wages increases, except for MPs. Plus, a lot of modellers have their own 3D printers and can produce what and when they want. Local councils, with the squeeze applied from central government, have to increase business rates, putting a greater strain on local high streets and shopping centres.
Great video! I went on the Saturday and I wanted to get some footage of the ALLYPALLY sign but it was infested with children. How are you getting such good close-ups? Zoom lens or just getting your camera in there? My first attempt at a video is here: th-cam.com/video/ESQAVhqgB-8/w-d-xo.html - would appreciate some feedback!
I do both the things you suggest when filming it's a mix of getting in close and using zoom but I will always try to get physically close if possible, zooming increases camera shake problems and the exposure difference with zooming can make the finished video inconsistent in appearance, zooming can be useful as it adds compression of distance in the shot which can be a good effect Thanks for watching 👌
@@greasyrailsThanks for the tips. I'm currently filming on a phone so I think I need better kit if I really want to explore zooming. You've shown me how effective it is so now I want to do it. :)
If those are the greatest layouts in and around the Greater London area, I can hardly wait to show off my second layout, the Epping Ongar Railway in the loft.
The problem is that I’m going to have to wait for my DCC Sound Great Western Steam Rail Motor. I could only order it from Kernow at the show!!
It Will be worth the wait they look awesome 👌
I’m very pleased with my instant purchases, which consisted of a DCC Sound Class 101 diesel multiple unit with working lights, both inside and outside, a DC Class D1 Southern steam locomotive and a Terrier tank locomotive. I purchased two open wagons and got a conflat for joining The Model Railway Club.
Some great models 👌
I have just bought a Mallard, a Merchant Navy, a Flying Scotsman, version 2, a New Maintenance Train, 4 Class 08, 3 Class 47, 2 Class 23, and 4 sets of the Class 205 in 3 different liveries. The bonus? It didn't cost me a Grand.
One of the greatest shows on earth!! I had a wonderful time there and spent just under a thousand quid on new equipment!!
Thanks. Didn’t make it this year, doesn’t seem to have been as well attended as usual, looking at the video.
Thanks for watching It was a good show I went Sunday and it had a good volume of visitors
It's beautiful and great!Good Details!
