Old Country Magick
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ก.พ. 2019
Warmest greetings and welcome to my quiet corner of the Suffolk countryside. Here I’ll share forgotten chronicles, curiosities, timeless customs, and the mystical world of old magick. I shall uncover and share the secrets of old Suffolk history, dive into the wonders of folklore, the disappearing dialect, and discover the practices and rituals that shaped our past. Join me as we bring the mysteries of yesteryears to life.
I was brought up amongst the old ways, and the old Suffolk accent and dialect which my family has spoken for hundreds of years. Generations of ancestors who worked the land and helped shape this beautiful old county, with old customs and a language that I was brought up to use daily and still speak with to this day.
Welcome to my little world, thanks for stopping by. x

M R James - Ghost Stories read in a Suffolk accent - There was a man dwelt by a churchyard
To all those that have asked me for videos of myself reading M R James ghost stories aloud, I've finally begun recording them :) Not that I mind at all seeing as he is one of my favourite authors! This wonderful man, who was so inspired by his life in Suffolk, East Anglia, and the sometimes spooky atmosphere that it graces us with. It is an honour to read his words out loud. Thank you for watching and to those who requested that I do this, it's an absolute pleasure. x

Unexpected Inspiration from Nature - This leaf inspired me today

Cap o' Rushes - Old Suffolk Folk / Fairy Tale - Read in a genuine Suffolk accent, as it was written
มุมมอง 4645 หลายเดือนก่อน
This old folk and fairy tale is from 1850, but it goes back much further than that here in Suffolk, East Anglia. The story of "Cap o' Rushes" is old version of the Cinderella style story. The story of Cap o' Rushes was spoken in the old Suffolk dialect with the old accent intact, which is contained within the writing of this 1850 version. This has been read using the accent I was brought up wit...

The old folk and fairy tale of Tom Tit Tom from 1878. This version contains all the original old Suffolk dialect, and makes use of the old accent within which this old tale was written. It's an old Suffolk version of Grimm's Rumpelstiltskin, just from here in the heart of Suffolk, East Anglia. Read aloud in the old way. A way in which I still speak everyday, as someone who was brought up to use...

Old English Suffolk Accent and Dialect - Words and Phrases - Whisket
มุมมอง 6176 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today's old English Suffolk dialect word is Whisket! A fantastic old word from merry old Suffolk, here in the heart of East Anglia. In this video I explain how this can be a very confusing word because of how much it sounds like the way we say another word, one with a completely different meaning. Thanks for watching. x

My mum is from Yorkhire, and my dad is a suffolk boi and we were always told to "hold yer horses" i think this was possibly more suffolk than a northern saying...could be both 😊
I hear your voice, and it all comes back to me; my UNFORGETTABLE time in Ipswich form 1985-88. Back then, I heard your accent a lot more than ya do now. I was back in 2014 and it wasn't nearly the same. So thank you for what you've done here. It's VERY important to keep alive , the spirit and essence of what that region once had in abundance....
I’ve lived in Suffolk since I was 6 months old and I’ve only heard the word brahmer used once by my ex husband , a very unsavoury character. He was eyeing up a young girl and told me that when she was older , she was going to. Be a right brahmer . I still do t know what he meant to this day .
I nearly bought a house in Acton, I love dumplings! Thankfully most women can't cook now. Narrow escape? ;-)
I do ALL of the Suffolk sayings without thinking! EVEN though I was born in Essex and moved to Suffolk when I was 7! Keep silly Suffolk going! (My Dad hated me 'speaking Suffolk')
Our Suffolk dialect is special, we need to keep it!
I completely agree, our dialect is very special indeed and shouldn’t ever be lost.
lovely!
Thank you, glad you liked it 🙂
Great to see you back on here
Thank you Michael, it’s nice to be back 🙂
If any of you get the chance to see any of the live M R James readings they do at Hemmingford Grey I really recommend them, SO atmospheric.
That’s been on my list of things to do for a while now, it looks (and sounds) really good
Great job. Have you done acting or narration work before? Wish there was more demand for east anglian accents in media!
Yeah, a lot of TV thinks Somerset is the only rural accent.
Thank you so much, glad you liked it ☺️ I’ve never done any acting, I’d probably get in a right muddle if I knew people were all around me watching. You’re right though, we should be represented more in the media!
I can't get enough of M R James and hearing you read it in your wonderful accent plus his own connection with Suffolk is a tonic for today. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I’m so glad you enjoyed it 🙂 M R James is simply wonderful isn’t he, and I love his deep connection to Suffolk too
What a lovely little video. Its amazing how nature can inspire you :) .
strangely this sounds like American south accent compared to Australian or NZ accent❤
Good to see you back. Finally some dry days after the deluge.
What a beautiful video! You should write poety having philosophical thoughts that are so uplifting. I write poety and it's so relaxing, and it releases a lot of life's frustrations. Take care my friend. Stay happy.
Thank you so much for your kind words, I’m glad you liked it. I do write poetry, and little stories, and I agree that it feels good for the soul. It’s very healing isn’t it! Hope you’re keeping well, sending best wishes.
It would be great to hear some of your poetry on video. I'm sure they will be more uplifting than than mine.
So lovely 😍 great message 😊
Thank you Karen, I’m so glad you liked it 😊
What a gorgeous message and how relaxing, I focused on the picture while listening to your soothing voice and just gazing at the serene water was such a meditative feeling. We are looking forward to more “Inspirations From Nature” videos. I feel you are an excellent channel of wisdom from the land 🌿✨ Also “sometimes you need to dig your heels in”, I needed to hear this today 🙏🌿
The beech leaf is beached :)
Oh very good, I like that 🙂
I love this ❤ x
Thank you so much Sharon, I’m glad you liked it ☺️ x
So right!😉☺️🥰
Thanks Teresa, who knew a little leaf would be so inspiring 🍂🧡🍂
The 4th of July saw the outbreak of the "Black Assize" in Oxford; a disease that killed 300 of the city folk, but only men and boys. Could it be that the town experienced just such an outbreak, and in order to cover up the malady they invented the tale of a demon dog? Measures against plague in those days were harsh and uncompromising, and unaccountable deaths would have aroused suspicions in the authorities. Just a thought. :)
I'm so pleased you are back 😊 I love your diary posts and find them very comforting x
Thank you so much Sharon for those lovely, kind words 😊 Hopefully I’ll be making these little videos regularly now, fingers crossed x
It’s lovely to hear your voice back on TH-cam 😊 I hope you’ve been keeping well. It sure has been rainy & windy the last couple of weeks here in Suffolk!
Thank you for the welcome back, it’s nice to be able to return 😊 Hasn’t this weather been relentless recently! Looks like we’ll be getting a small break from it, might even see the sun again 🌞
I live in Arizona land of very little rain. I spoke with my sister who lives near Saxmundham this morning she said it was chucking it down and her pets didn't want to go out in it. I told her I envy her so much, I love the rain!
Greeting to you over in Arizona! Your sister is right, it’s been absolutely slinging it down here. Her poor pets, no wonder they don’t want to go out, neither do us humans. Shame we can’t send some to you, we’ll be happy to share some with you 🙂
Welcome back ❤
Thank you so much! It’s lovely to be back 🧡
I'm so thrilled to see you back on you tube. I have missed your wonderful posts ! I hope you are keeping well and enjoying the start of this beautiful Autumn season. ,🍁🍄🦌🌳🎃🍁
Thank you so much, and thank you for coming back with your lovely words as always. I’m doing much better now thank you and so looking forward to the season ahead, even if I do need a raincoat and water wings today 😂 🍁🎃🍂🍄
Nice to hear you, Sarah. It has been mild and wet lately. I don't mind it, personally. It sure sounds like you have a good sense of direction - that must feel good x
Thank you, it’s really nice to be back after a much needed break. Things got way too hectic a little while ago! I’m rather fond of the rain, there’s something rather cosy and comforting about it when I’m indoors, and refreshing when I’m outside in it. Hope all is well with you. x

It is nice to see you back! I do hope your weather improves soon!
Thank you so much for the welcome back, and yes the weather really does need to improve doesn’t it. At this rate I might need to consider buying a canoe 😀
Oh wow, just saw your video about people being offended! Crazy. I love the way you talk. I’m from North Carolina too
Thank you, I’m pretty sure I’d love the way you talk too. I love accents, they’re a very special thing. Obviously some people don’t like accents according to those who were offended by me and my voice. Some people really need to find more important things to worry about.

Funnily enough I use that when talking to my pets (and other peoples pets) 😂 Good advice though, I’ll start using it on humans too 😆

Awww, that’s so kind of you, thank you ☺️ Hope all is well with you!
Thank's for coming back on TH-cam, I love East Anglia. My Mom and Dad lived in the village Of Claire and then in Ipswich.
Thank you for the welcome back 🙂 Clare is a such a lovely place, your parents lived in a very pretty area! I used to work in Ipswich and lived there for a while too, it’s changed so much in recent years though.
What do you think of Kessingland?
I was born in Suffolk to Suffolk parents. We moved to South Wales when I was only a year old. I grew up in Wales and still live here, but I've always strongly felt I'm a Suffolk boy. I reinforced this by doing my family tree and my DNA. My ancestry goes back to the 1400s in Suffolk. My DNA is 92% eastern English.
This is the closest English accent to the Australian one that I've heard
Hey! Come alive! Do a new thinggie please...
Hi, I am indeed now alive again and making new thingies 🙂 I’m catching up on my comments too, as you can see
I love this vid. Hope you are still alive and reading my comment. Regards from Puerto Rico.
nursing at west suffolk hosp., in 1973 the patients often had me flummoxed- ie i need some sup nuss. didhe want soup or soap?
I love this comment as I completely understand how some words all sound the same, it can cause some confusion at times 🙂
Lovely footage, I would like to watch any updates if you film anything else . You are Blessed to have them come to you . Subscribed and will check out some of your other videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for the sub 🙂 I’ve collected quite a lot of video footage of the whole thing from beginning to end so I’ll probably piece some of it together and share what happened when the bees decided to visit 🐝
What a lovely sight to behold. 🙏🏼
It’s quite something isn’t it. I could sit for hours watching them 🐝
@@OldCountryMagick 🙏🏼
Beautiful !! You are lucky to have them in your garden. Hope they do well. 🍁🌳🦡🦉💐
Lovely little things aren’t they 🐝 I did feel very privileged to be able to watch their daily goings on, and at a safe but close distance. Nature truly is wonderful 🍂🍁🐝🍁🍂
I visited Sutton Hoo last summer and agree it’s a truly magical and spiritual place. Suffolk is dotted with spooky burial mounds that are much older than Saxon times. I found one in a copse with the tiny muntjac deer and camped there. I absolutely love Suffolk.
What a place to camp, it sounds perfect. Plus if it’s good enough for deer then it’s good enough for us humans to be there too. You’re right though, Suffolk is so full of magical and mysterious things, places, and myths. No wonder we love it so much.
Bees are endlessly fascinating. They have 5 eyes for example. There’s still lots we don’t understand about their society. The conscious design in nature seems very apparent to me when I see bees at work.
I agree, they really are remarkable creatures. They really are one of the most interesting species on this planet, how they think, act, what they create. There are two things that always fascinate me the most about our natural world. One is how the golden ratio appears in so many things, and also how bees (and spiders) have this wonderful innate awareness to build incredible, perfect structures.
@@OldCountryMagick I was surprised to find bees in Siberia this summer. How will they survive the winter? Next week I’m going home to Sydney where the bees will be coming out of hibernation. In spring I’ll be back in Suffolk. Bees really do feed the world! My dream is to have a cottage with a garden like yours. I’ll look into this golden rule. Thank you 🙏
You’re extremely lovely if you don’t mind me sayin’ 😎
Well that comment has just made my day, thank you so much 😊
I've heard that if you speak with a Suffolk accent in Australia, the locals will ask you which part of Tasmania you come from. Seems a load of people from Suffolk emigrated there way back when and the accent kind of stuck.
Very true, the accent certainly did travel a long way and thankfully stayed too 🙂 Thanks for mentioning that Tasmania seems to be the place that us Suffolk folks sound akin to, although I was asked by an Australian lady once what part of Brisbane I was from 🙂
I've a bee hive, but no swarm.
I should have sent the bees in your direction.
I'm starting to think maybe this is where the Australian accent originated from .you sound like my mum 😅
Aren't they lovely.
They are indeed lovely, such clever little creatures 🐝
I love Suffolk accent, please do more mai teacher... love from Malaysia 👍
Thank you, and yes I’m now back to uploading videos after a little break. Sending you best wishes and love from Suffolk 🙂
2:25 my great great grand mum was born in Suffolk on the 25th of May in 1861, so hearing you say 1862 was crazy.
Oooh, I like that. Especially as you have family history in our area from that time. It connects us more with our ancestors when we can track the time difference I think.
@@OldCountryMagick Ipswich Town FC is now my favourite PL club as well! Love that the colours are similar to the Union Jack.
😂 and who in the little village I lived in would have worn a waistcoat…I’m imagining old Mr. Roy in a waistcoat with his chickens…
