เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ต.ค. 2013
Glass Goat is a small farm and gallery in the 1000 Islands region, St. Lawrence River, Northern New York State. We aim to create beautiful objects and works of art, restore and captain wooden boats all while minimizing our impact on the environment.
Restoring a 30 Year Old St Lawrence Skiff - Steam Bending
Scott brings a decrepit fiberglass skiff, which is over 30 years old, back to life using a combination of new and reclaimed wood. He steam bends a full white oak coaming and makes this skiff look like a fully wooden skiff from a hundred years ago.

What anamazing build! So happy to see the boat out on the water! Cheers!
Just a few bits of gleaming varnish makes her look classy.
I agree. I no longer wish for a bright sided boat with the mineral content of the water in our river. Too hard to keep the varnish looking good when it is in constant spray contact. My hydroplane is going to be mostly painted with varnish areas where it counts and where it can be protected easily. Interior, coaming for sure, transom maybe? Thanks for being aboard!
Great update. Very lovely looking skiff! 🇨🇦
@@billmeldrum2509 thanks, Bill! Have a great holiday.
Hi Scott-enjoying watching your videos! I have purchased my grandfathers 1962 Chris Craft SeaSkiff and I’m trying to learn from your videos. I know I need to seal up the seams in the transom when I get to redoing it. I think you mentioned using Life Calk in your transom seams in your video. Is that correct and any recommendations for using it?
Depends on the seam location and the size of the gap. I’ve seen some pretty big gaps close up quickly as the boat swells when launched. I did use life caulk on that boat above the waterline. I have an issue where I replaced the piece at the very bottom of the transom though, that seam (about 5 inches up from bottom) was too tight and after a couple of years of being in the water it’s a bit ugly. Doesn’t leak though. I may run a thin kerfed saw down that seam next spring to open it up. I would probably fill that gap with 5200 afterwards. If it swells it would just push the extra 5200 out and I’d trim it with a razor. Send me images if you like through Patreon and I’ll tell you what I think.
@ Thanks-the boat is in storage currently, but when I get a chance I might take you up on your offer and send some pictures or video your way.
Seems odd, what was the logic behind a flywheel forward configuration?
@@internalcombustion641 Chris Craft wanted to create a way to easily replace all of the flathead engines that had been used for decades and were becoming relatively obsolete. Turning the engine around allowed the V8 to fit in the same location as the flathead it would replace. An engine with the flywheel forward could sit lower and it put the transmission closer to the block. Inboard Runabouts don’t have a lot of room when passengers sit in front of the engine. The replacement didn’t take a lot of labor or parts, motor mounts were often in the same location. The same or lower weight and more horsepower. They sold many thousands of these as replacements.
Very interesting. Do you think you could turn the hull upside down with that rig? I am rebuilding an old wooden boat and need to flip it. So I’m investigating options.
www.gohoist.com/flipboatworkonhull.html
that GoHoist is pretty nifty/neato … was actually thinking of building my own out of screwed&glued 2x4’s with a come-along … wonder what the price difference would be ??🤔
I think a lot of engineering went into the design of these. I built my gantries for the boat shed, and they work well, but they're not at all portable or stable on their own. The gantries are attached to each other and to the boat shed. I've always tended to want to build my own version of things, especially to add some characteristics that I desire. In this case, and for the price of these, I'm glad I have the real thing. There are only a couple of things I would change about the GoHoist, minor things, which I'll show when I do make changes on another episode next summer. My biggest problem with these is how to store them. I'm definitely going to create some type of rack in my new pole barn.
Looks like a great time saver. It looked like you had a not in the sling to adjust the length. How did you tie that not?
It is just a simple knot tied after making a loop. You have to kind of guess at the length at first, and it does slip some, but then it tightens up. The strap is pretty slippery, so a couple of times I've had to tie a second knot. You can tell right away though as you begin lifting whether or not you'll need to. They do show you how to tie the knot in the directions that come with it.
@ thanks
Super cool hoist system! That looks like it saves a ton of time, as well as your back! Awesome video Scott! I’m so glad that you are back!

Thanks! Glad you're still aboard. :)
I’ve done that same job with jacks and blocks many, many times, and on much bigger boats than that Lyman. It goes pretty quick that way, even with 6 or 7 set-ups - and you can do it easily single handed. Setting all that gantry stuff up seams like a huge job in itself, and almost impossible if you don’t have help or a loader. And then you have to break it down again when you’re done? I don’t think so. They used to make small “Travel- Lift” type trailers - you should look for one of those. With that and your tractor you’d be all set.
@@tommegan6500 I wouldn’t say I’ve done it many, many times, but almost always alone. Even the first time with the GoHoist when I had to use the tractor to set it up, it was less than 1/2 the time total. I also feel much safer not climbing and jacking in, over and around a trailer. I’m also way less worn out physically at the end so I can’t agree with you on this one. A small travel lift would be nice but only at my shop, not to haul around. I guess it would be nice to have a hydraulic trailer as well but they can be rough on wooden boats. For the money and for my situation, I love this method. Thanks for watching!
@ Years ago, I built a yard trailer for moving boats around the yard. It was just curved bunks laminated from 2x6’s bolted to a single solid axle. Only one obstruction! It made loading/unloading super easy. It did have one failing for launching - it floated! I guess I didn’t see that coming:<)
@ usually trailers only float when you forget to remove the straps at the transom. :)
The world returns to sanity.....Scott is back :)
Good to be back. Working on episode 12 this morning.
That’s a lot to deal with in a short time Scott. I hope you’re doing well. Your videos were a great inspiration for me as I rebuilt my Lyman. Thank you.
I can't wait to get back to finishing my Lyman in the spring!
So glad to see you back on the TH-cams!

Thanks Bill, hope all is well in Canada. I miss seeing it out of my front window. It's a long way from SC.
❤❤❤
Just now finding this on TH-cam. Very interesting, I live in Redwood and I swear I met speckles the other day at the storage units on Simpson rd lol. I have a wee lassie canoe that my father started years ago amd never finished before he passed. One of these winters I plan on finishing it. I just need a year where I have no commission work or honey do work lol.
@@zacharycullen3677 Zach, I hope you gave Speck some love. I see him often and miss him but the situation with Bill is better for him. I haven’t finished that skiff yet but will next summer and with get the rest of the videos out then. I restored 2 other skiffs which got in the way of that one.
@glassgoat9601 wow it's a small world. First thing he did was bring me a chunk of 2x4, I knew the drill after that. Played fetch with him for 10 minutes. He reminds me very much of my late golden who loved to chase whatever you could throw with the same exact intensity amd seriousness of waiting to chase. Very nice dog and yes I sure gave him some love and wanted to take him home with me lol. Bill is a great guy, I have plowed the storage units for close to 20 years and he kept me on when he bought them from suttons. Best wishes and looking forward to the rest of the videos. I beleive my nieces husband, Aziel has worked with you a little bit too. Nice to know of more craftsmen in the area , I learned alot from my father and continue to try to get better as I go. I have run my own shop and sawmill for a long time and I just find alit of satisfaction in the fact that I have the ability to take something from the woods and turn it into something that someone will want in their home.
Good God don't let your dog drink that antifreeze!!!!!!!--!-
We only use the antifreeze that is pet safe, not the green stuff. Even then, we don't leave it laying around for them to drink.
Once they canceled the antique race Boat Regatta this show is a no-show for me! ....
It's too bad that the regatta was canceled, but it is getting harder and harder to find the people willing to put effort into staging these events, not to mention the costs.
@glassgoat9601 The race Boat Regatta was always a huge draw for the museum and the community but noise complaints from the residence and the "Motorsports killing" liability insurance was the final death blow.....
Yank it and have it totally rebuilt at a good private machinist.
That would be an overreaction. That engine just needed a bit of sorting out and after that was done it continued to perform very well. It is now in storage awaiting another boat that needs it. We've done a compression test on it and it is good, there is no smoke at the exhaust. No need to spend many thousands of dollars on it needlessly.
One of the best cordless drivers you have there! I have my grandfathers, works great, with little cam-out. Do you use Robertson head screws?
I only use Robertson screws on boats that already have them. Normally I use Frearson as they are the ones I have the easiest access to, and they are what is already used on most of the boats I work on.
Scott, you are very talented! I learn so much from your channel. That skiff is looking awesome!
That skiff is done as of today! I’ll make a quick video soon of the results. Thanks!
Great job with this repair!
I never seem to find long enough clear white oak so these scarfs are a life saver!
I love watching these type videos. Fascinating to watch and learn the right way to do the things that we take for granted. Always many steps to do things right.
I made several more of these type scarfs on the coaming.
I see this over and over. The use of wax paper as a release agent for epoxy. It is possible to contaminate the epoxy with wax. Just use a sheet of plastic. Epoxy will not stick to the plastic.
In this case, the paper could leave a wax residue on the epoxy surface, but I will wipe the area down with lacquer thinner before sanding and or hand planing it to a final surface. Even if I used plastic, I would follow this procedure as I waxed the stainless screw before inserting it in the epoxied area. Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve never had a fisheye develop in any areas that I’ve varnished or painted after using this method. I have used plastic before but didn’t have any handy.
just a thought, instead of using a commercial grade shop vacuum , I use my Husqvarna leaf blower to get out all the sawdust , debris & bugs !!!
Not a bad idea, especially in a boat this opened up. Maybe only have to end up vacuuming the end you blew it towards. Thanks!
Scott, what a beautiful boat! I can’t wait to see the progress! I hope that you have been out on the Chris Craft! I’m hopefully launching my Thompson this weekend! As always, awesome video!!!
Chris Craft going in soon. Not sure if it will be before this weekend but maybe.
Sigh...yum...I can smell varnish right through the computer screen :)
I smell it right now as I just applied some :)
More repair videos please. That's the only reason I am subscribed. Not interested in boat shows or cruising videos. God bless 🙌
The channel follows what I am doing, when I repair boats, you get to see those videos.. Always a pleasure to watch someone so skilled at maneuvering a big truck!
I agree as I enjoy just about any skill done well.
Hello I have a pair of marine hemi motors that came stock in my 1964 42ft hatteras. I repower the boat with a pair of Detroit motors at 1000 hours on the hemis. They have been sitting for about 30 years with cylinders filled with atf and crank case full of new oil. And carbs drained. Both motors fan flawlessly . I planned on using them someday but now don't have the time. Any idea what these are worth. They are %100 stock With consecutive serial#. And still have the maintenance logs and all the paperwork and repair books for both motors. I have had several people want to buy them but only wanted to pay for the motors without the related marine equipment and transmissions. They wanted to use them as racing motors but I feel they were made to be on the water. I would like to see them live on and get a fair price. Or just hold on to them untill they are even harder to find. But would like to see them on the water again. What do you think these are worth.
Do you have an image of them or serial/model numbers? Need a bit more info.
@glassgoat9601 off the top of my head no I don't know the model or serial. I can look for pictures of them. I do know they are 426 hemi marine motors which were the industrial motor. I have the motors in storage in Portland oregon we just moved to boise idaho. We got tires of the democrap bullshit We plan on going there end of June for family reunion and clean out storage. To haul them back. I may be going back sooner to show them to a guy restoring a criss craft yacht. If you want I can save this and reply back After I get back. Or maybe I can send my storage key to a friend and he can get pictures of the block numbers if your serious about it.

Thanks for watching!
Scott, nice boat shed. I'm envious! I'm going to try to build something similar in the future. I can't wait to see the progress on that hydroplane. I like how you make tasteful changes to some of your boats to make them different than the others. Unbeknownst really came out amazing. I really like how you decked it. That Iron Duke seems to move that boat quite well. Once again, great video!
The boat shed is going to be even better when I fully integrate the container. Container delivery, setup and work so far video coming soon. I have no regrets about building that type of shed. A southern exposure with a clear side (clear SHRINK not clear greenhouse material) is imperative. The wood chips are great, and warm in the winter but can be annoying during certain operations. Let me know if you’re planning one.
Scott, once again that was an incredible video! Thank you very much for sharing it. I live in Buffalo, NY and I have a case of the winter the blues....this video put a giant smile on my face. I'm actually going to crank the heat in my garage and get started on preparing my 1964 Thompson for the season. I joined the ACBS this year, and I'm hoping to attend some events. Cheers!!!
Next episode is a boat show, that’ll get you excited! Congrats on joining the ACBS!
