Trump and his lawyers know full well that if he had testified at his trial, the prosecuting attorney would have cornered him into saying something stupid. Then Trump would have lied to get out that corner, because that's his go-to move. If Trump had lied on the stand--in open court--and the prosecution had presented evidence proving that Trump lied, Trump would have been charged with perjury, and his lawyers would have been charged with suborning perjury. No lawyer in his right mind would have allowed Trump to testify. There was no upside for Trump. He just wanted to testify to indulge his swollen ego. He thinks he's always the smartest guy in the room, and he believed that he could have outwitted a seasoned trial lawyer. What narcissism!
