Eggshell biomineralization genes in the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot
The Puerto Rican parrot (Amazona vittata) is the last surviving species of parrots native to lands under the U.S. jurisdiction. It was listed as a critically endangered species in 1967 under the Endangered Species Preservation Act, being considered one of the ten most endangered bird species in the world. Reduced eggshell strength and the consequential loss of offspring is one of the main problems often found by parrot breeders. The Puerto Rican Parrot Project is focused on annotating genes known to be differentially expressed in the uterus during eggshell deposition with the aim of finding genetic differences between the Puerto Rican parrot and its sister species.

Why Study the F Element?
มุมมอง 3842 ปีที่แล้ว
In this lecture for the 2022 GEP Summer Scholars program, Professor Sarah C. R. Elgin from Washington University in St. Louis describes the scientific rationale for using comparative genomics to study the expansion of the Muller F Element in four Drosophila species. The Drosophila melanogaster Muller F Element (also known as the “dot” chromosome) exhibits unusual characteristics - while the F E...

Investigating the Strange Case of the Drosophila Dot Chromosome
มุมมอง 2282 ปีที่แล้ว
In this lecture, Professor Sarah C.R. Elgin from Washington University in St. Louis provides an overview of the scientific rationale for studying the Drosophila Muller F Element. The Drosophila melanogaster Muller F Element (also known as the fourth chromosome or the "dot" chromosome) is largely heterochromatic. However, the distal 1.3 Mb of the D. melanogaster dot chromosome contains ~80 prote...

An introductory video on the analysis of dot plots and protein alignments, presented by GEP Virtual TA Rae Lucas. The dot plots and protein alignments presented in this video were generated from Gene Model Checker, with our reference organism being Drosophila melanogaster. We begin with an overview of protein alignments and how we interpret their various features, along with what this means for...
GEP Tools | Using the RNA-Seq Tracks
มุมมอง 5382 ปีที่แล้ว
A video describing RNA-Seq by Virtual GEP TA Christina Ray Santos. We start off with a guided navigation to the GEP UCSC Genome Browser, where GEP student annotators can view their gene models, and then take a step back to talk about how it’s obtained, how scientists can use it to analyze transcriptomes and how they vary between species, organisms, or even cells. This leads into the topic of al...

Great presentation and awesome science done by Elgin lab. I'm sure we will get to know more about the origins of 4th chromosome's peculiar chromatin state soon

The video covering how to complete to annotation form isn't necessary for the current version of the form. However, some instructors are using the prior version which is explained in th-cam.com/video/yV0vujABsaE/w-d-xo.html

Thank you so much for the guidance. I was close to having a mental breakdown as there were over 20 pages of instructions for this particular lab. You saved me an entire day of panic and shrunk it to 1 hour of productive work. God bless you sir!

At the end of this video it says the next video (video 2) will go into detail about how to fill out "Part A. Gene Report Form", but then in next video (video 3) it already has that part filled out and skips too "Part B. CDS Report Form". So I was wondering if there is a video for how to fill out Part A? Seems like there was supposed to be one based on what is said in the videos. Thanks so much!
