Alex Ross and the World's Finest Heroes
Alex Ross redefined Superman for decades, but why hasn't his version of Batman caught on in the same way?

The Legend of Kingdom Come: kck.st/4dhoJbM
When Kingdom Come came out in the late 90's I was blown away by Alex Ross' take on Superman. And it was awesome to see how his version of the character- taking it back to the style of the Joe Shuster original- began to be the standard for artists working on the monthly books. I'm a big fan of his Batman as well- but we never quite saw some of the elements of his Dark Knight catch on in quite the same way! I'll go into why I think that was the case.
And, as always, I'll have a close up look at this great artwork in glorious 4k!

Both Calkins and Raymond in Flash Gordon owed a lot to Art Deco. Raymond was actually working in what was the King Features House Style. So was Calkins working in a Chicago style. This was driven home to me when I finally looked at John Terry's Scorchy Smith after rereadding for the umpteenth time Harold Gray's comments about what he learned about comics from Sidney Smith. It sank in how much like Buck Rogers and Calkins aviation strip crossroads Scorchy looked. One by-product of this in both Calkins's and Russell Keaton's art was the linear and more decorative approach to cityscapes than Raymond's more classically influenced concentration of volume. One person who admitted he was influenced by Buck Rogers was Jack Kirby and a look at his cityscapes from Asgard and Atlantis to his designs for the aborted movie of Zelazny's Lord of Light will show many intriguing parallels. I like Yager and Tuska (who also worked on Scorchy Smith) too but by then the styles had changed. Murphy Anderson also ghosted Prince Valiant at one point. Just thoughtf I'd put my two cents in because you didn't mention the Kirby connection. This was a good vedeo.

Byrne's Superman was lazy, inept and unsatisfying. Byrne was in way over his egomaniacal head. Also, Byrne's "revamp" of Superman had nothing to so with Crisis On Infinite Earths.

In Sweden he's called "Den Vandrande Vålnaden" which means something like "The wandering wraith" it just sounds cooler than ghost who walks. Its alliterative He's also dark blue due to a lack of purple ink at the time. Which makes him look more intimidating and is better camouflage. I think it actually ended up making him better. Also the legacy thing is great with all the historical settings. I think he needs some competently made movies. They could add some realism and sensitivity towards the african setting and how they portray the tribesmen. Id like a movie set during historical periods. I remember reading one where he was protecting huguenots from persecution in france and another one where he mets Rene Descartes in Sweden. There's just so many possibilities with the character.

I feel there is really more to "clean lines" look because of Terry Austin than Marshall Rogers himself. Team-up of Carmine Infantino and Terry on Star Wars was match made in heaven, their match of penciling and inking styles made it look modern and befitting the subject matter.

@@maricallo6143 I agree! Austin's style, at least before the mid eighties, really was a strong part of anyone he inked. I liked that style, even if it's a little dated, a lot more than the chunkier crosshatching that he started doing after 86 or 87.

Adams' version is definitely a big step in Batman's visual evolution- and I'm being a little hyperbolic with my title. But Rogers' run really solidified the character and Gotham. Adams' batman output was a lot spottier than I'd thought before looking into it- my take is that rogers and englehart took a lot of what they'd seen about batman in the late 60s and early 70s, how it gad started to move away from camp, and formalized that into the approach to the character that was the blueprint until Miller came along.

I saw that image when I was researching- I'd have included it if I could find it at a higher resolution!

Do you truly like José Luis García López´s art? By the way I find it interesting that whenever an important a Spanish name (particularly in DC) it so happens that it is because the artists are either Spanish or from Puerto Rico. ...like, the AMAZING Jorge Jiménez. And not that looks are everything but Jorge is young and looks more like a model than the artist he is. And he works from Spain.

I am a big fan of Garcia Lopez! and you're right- there certainly do seem to be a lot of great artists from those places. Love Jiménez's work- one of the greats.

@@benjaminmorsecomicbookarti3793 So glad you like Jorge Jiménez. He is incredibly talented. And he has a style that tends to appeal to almost everybody. Have you seen him? Besides pictures you can find interviews here in TH-cam. Some, if not most, are of Spanish News Channels. I ask because I wonder if you ever imagined him to be the way he is. ...I thought he´d be just a regular guy and truly impressed me by not being one at all when you think of a comic book artist. In fact, check a video (from DC) titled Visionnaires featuring Jorge Jiménez where they go in dept into his professional life. Please do a video about him. PS So glad he can have as credits the designs of Superboy (Jon Kent) and Punchline.

@@justicierodelaliga I definitely have making a video about him on my list! His work has evolved a bit over the last few years (he's changed up his rendering and linework a bit) that would make it interesting to cover!
