We visited Petra in April 2024 with our 7 year old son.
We started at the main entrance at 6.10am (so it was quiet and cool!) and headed towards the Siq (20 mins). It was amazing walking through the high rocks not knowing what was round the corner.
We spent time at the Treasury taking photos and simply enjoying the view.
There were toilets dotted throughout and places to refuel with water or an ice cream.
800 steps later (took us till approximately 8am with breaks) we made it to the Monastery. We stopped for a coffee, photos and a rest.
Then we headed back down the steps to explore other areas of Petra.
Unfortunately the high sacrifice (view from above) was closed. This probably would have been too much for our legs in one day but we would have had the time).
We left Petra around 1pm and had a bite to eat outside the gates of Petra which was cheaper than eating inside. We then had a rest before returning to Petra at night.
Little Petra is just up the road and doesn’t involve much walking to reach, it’s free entry so easy to tag onto the day.
All in all definitely achievable in one day, but exhausting! We got Joshua a horse right at the end to give him a bit of a break from walking.
