Boat Rebuild Ep 9 - Bulkheads Forming and Heaps of Glassing
In this video I get around templating and forming the bulkheads and glassing the final stringer. I also talk about cost, build so far and where I plan to take it in the near future.
For those wondering the hull is a Cruise Craft Ranger 18 and the rebuild is being done predominantly with polyester resin and a combination of 600g CSM and 400-600g BIAX cloth. My goal is to make the structure stronger than it would have come out of the factory whilst successfully converting her into a centre console.

Boat Rebuild Ep 8 - Main Stringers
มุมมอง 1.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This week I formed, prepped and glassed in the two main structural stringers. This will set the conditions to move onto the rigging tubes and bulkheads in the coming week.
Boat Rebuild Ep 7 - Swim Platform and Transom Prep
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This week I got the old stringers out, prepped and glassed the back of the transom and same with the platforms, so that I'm ready for for when the next lot of supplies arrive.
Boat Rebuild Ep 6 - Stringer Glassing and Duckboard Forming.
มุมมอง 3.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Make a bit of progress getting 2 of the stringers glassed in to the hull and tied in to the transom. Also get the duck board / swim platforms formed up and ready to go.
Boat Rebuild Ep 5 - The Transom is In
มุมมอง 1.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Glassing the transom in. Big step and a big win in the project timeline, I'd be lying if I said I was on track to have this done by the end of my holidays.
Boat Rebuild Ep 4 - Templating stringers, bit more demo, filling the strakes
มุมมอง 2.9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Getting after a bit more demolition, trying to sort out the replacement stringers and filling the strakes. Topped off with blowing up vacuums and poor weather, it's been an annoying week.
Boat Rebuild Ep 3 - The demo continues
มุมมอง 1.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Day two of the demo sees the dash get cut out and the remaining floor pieces from under the fuel tank. It also sees overheating ryobi batteries which really put a pause on my efforts.
Boat Rebuild Ep 2 - The Demolition Begins
มุมมอง 1.2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Got stuck into the demo today. Dusty and itchy but got a lot done. Floors up, couple of stringers out and heaps more to go.
Boat Rebuild Ep 1 - Transom install
มุมมอง 2.2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I bought a lemon, now I've gotta fix it. but I don't really know how. so let's figure it out. rotten stringers, rotten transom, outdated design. trying to bring it reliably into modernity.
That belt sander on the saw horse is genius. Probably much nore comfortable to handle thr part with two hands instead of one hand on part and the other holding a grinder.
Grinding glass is slides without socks. How fun was the aftermath of that 😂. I have done the same and scratched till I almost bled
Yeah mate it's the worst, unfortunately my glassing shoes are so impregnated with fibres this is the better option.
@@JmDory wow those must have been through many grinding sessions. You're doing great work I'm getting up to date on your videos.
Love ya work mate as a professional boat builder i would say you can come work with me anytime , ill be here watching when you get back into it ,cheers.
Hey mate, thanks very much for the feedback I appreciate it.
Fantastic job , great attention to detail , and you know what you have under ya when out at sea 👌👌👌👌👌
Hey mate, thanks for having a look. I appreciate the feedback.
Had a start! Thought I saw my name on your video... maybe we're related? Cheers.!
To much talk mate, you will get more done if you get over your own voice, Yap, yap ,yap, to much bullshit talk. Only u like the sound of your voice and wanking yourself.
If your using floatation foam never ever ever drill holes in the foam filled compartments you need to make sure u have sealed those compartments. Once agar do not drill holes in foam filled compartments
Hey mate, thanks for the feedback, could you tell me why that is? of note, I've decided to not have under floor storage so the entirety of those side sections of floor will be fully sealed and watertight. if that isn't sufficient, I can still glass in the rigging tube, effectively sealing each compartment. thanks for the heads up
You thicken my hull
Nice build 👍
Cheers mate, thanks for your interest
What supplier did you get your supplies from and what board are you using for your stringers?
Hey mate, I use Trojan fibreglass for all the consumable fibreglass stuff like glass mat and resin. it's in NSW so takes about a week to get to me. And I'm using 19mm thermolite for the stringers, 38mm for the transom, and I get that locally in townsville from a place called FibreFinish. but I believe it is imported from the states.
@@JmDory Thanks legend, I was already looking at Trojan so I’ll jump on that! I’m Gold Coast based so will look locally for the boards too, delivery is huge on the shit.

Are you creating a fake floor for this boat? Asking for a friend in Indonesia 👏🏻
Building Boatdozer strength levels with all these layers planned 💪🏼😎
Those Cruise craft hulls are the old Vickers Easyrider moulds. The boat will be perfect for North QLD inshore conditions of short, sharp chop. Extremely nice riding hulls, just make sure to keep weight out of the nose. They can carry huge loads on modest power. My old one had a tired 115 Merc and did just fine. I would think one of the modern 4 strokes of 100hp would be fine if propped right.
Hey mate, cheers for the info. Its been hard for me to judge the baseline as i was constantly carrying around the extra 80kg or so with water under the floor. Im hoping that utilising composite structural materials much lighter than waterlogged ply and the composite style flooring that it will be about the same weight as when I started, maybe a touch lighter. cheers for the heads up about nose weight, the plan is that as the helm will be slightly further aft than the original, that the cast deck and killbox will be compensated by that shift in helm/my weight. As for the comfort, thats one of the reasons I didnt bin the entire thing. very stable at rest and not too bad through the chop and can get me out to the reef on a good day. Thanks for the feedback
@@JmDory These boats were built heavy, I wouldn't pull your hair out trying to keep the weight under control. My old 18 footer had 140l of fuel tanks from transom to around the helm area, barely even noticed when they were full. They are extremely stable- I used to use my one as a work boat and have had TWO adult men standing on the gunwhale with plenty of reserve stability. They will definitely get you to the reef on a good day, and back on a bad day.
Great stuff lad
Another good video man, btw fk your green
Good stuff Doz. Enjoy the addition of the updates at the start. Keep that stuff up.
Good stuff jm
Just getting Finished with summer here in Canada. I went and bought a fan to stay in my boat during the heat, morale has improved tenfold lol it does throw a lot of dust though😅
Hey mate, I think thats going to be a must here in a couple of weeks. Starting to get bloody hot
A lot of strength and pulling power on the bottom side 😎👌🏼
I've burnt rhrough about 5 of those ryobi orbitals now, handy with bunnings go in and get a new free one.
I take milk bottles, juice bottle, any plastic bottle really, use the bottom and mark with a sharpie at 250 ml increments, never have to buy mixing containers.
Encase first bud, no reason not to.
Hey mate, with that in mind, on the stringers this coming week I was thinking of doing the heavy lay up outside the boat (after I make sure they'll fit) as it will be easier to do on the floor and flat to get a good bond, then just tying them to the hull. Reckon thats sound?
@@JmDory Yep makes perfect sense, anything not tied to the hull do first.
I really enjoy the videos you’ve made on this build. Doing a good job mate keep em coming
Thanks mate, glad you find them entertaining. I appreciate the feedback!
With the fracturing using cabosil I find dropping the ratio from 2% to 1.5% with the catalyst helps, filler tends to heat up more and cure a bit fast causing fracture. Good idea using the milled fibre or chopped fibre though for the bigger gaps, I would have done the same.
Looks bloody awesome
Never use waxed resin mate, you should only ever be using laminating resin. Why are you using waxed resin? Did you get it free or something? Everything else looks fucken great, use you fin roller a bit more though, I find paddle rollers better than the fin personally.
thanks heaps for the feedback and advise mate. the waxxed is what I had on hand initially, and I only used it for jobs I could complete the main structure of in one hit, to avoid it going off before I laminated the next stage, if that makes sense. that way I just had to sand it back to do things like tie in the stringers etc. all unwaxxed from here as i found a good supplier. the waxed stuff I was using, though, was laminating resin with a 48hr reapplication time but I found the flaws of waxed pretty quickly, especially in the heat of the day. Thanks again, mate
@@JmDory Awesome mate you are doing a great job, I've been through the same process. I got all my supplies from Trojan fibreglass in Newcastle who were great, unsure where you are though. Keep it up man, when complete you will have a boat you can keep for life as you will know every nook and cranny of the structure and the electrcis, even more than a new boat, ultimate confidence for taking the kids out. Ps, unsure on your terminoogy, in my experience resin is either waxed or laminating, laminating has no wax and vice versa. Anyway all good mate enjoy the process.
Mate is Ryobi your sponsor looks more like a Bunnings shop. Just kidding good vids mate.
Hahahaha, yeh mate, might as well be. But actually, I'm going to start switching back to ozito for the convenience of the in store replacement. especially with all this resin dust.
@JmDory if you get a chance checkout Expedition Evans. They bought a hurricane damaged yacht and had to do a incredible amount of hull work to get the sailing boat into the water. Keep it up mate.
Hey J have been watching the vids. You have taken on a mammoth task there mate but you look like you are doing a very thorough job. As you said there are few channels in Australia that are doing the same. Have seen several that have done damaged yachts of similar ilk. Keep at it mate.
Well done for having a go bud.!!
Tape your low sides, then fillet with putty on the low ,pour resin on the highside and tape will wet then come back down the high with a fillet of putty then is time for 1708.
Hey mate, thanks heaps for the feedback. It's probably very obvious that I'm learning each stage as I go. I'm guessing the doing the low side first makes filling and filleting the high side easier? Thanks again
you are bonding your lungs. wear a mask
I find it hard to believe those stingers where only 3 years old, man they are in bad nick
Mate, when I first pulled the floor up, I thought the same thing. there was evidence the transom had been done (poorly), so the hope was the stringer story was true also. Nope.
The scissor jack of death on the jack stand sends me 😂
everything will be fine
Would look cooler in carbon fibre
my bank account looks cooler in traditional glass fibre but
@@JmDory bank accounts are temporary, coolness is eternal.
Would this boat be available to hire when it’s completed? My family would like to visit Australia via the Timor sea undetected by RAN/border officials.
Enjoyed the guest appearance from Ricky Bobby. Hope you found the “cheap” corflute 😜
Are those wells in the middle of the boat for people smuggling? Like, is that where they stay?
Better be quick, the 2 weeks of Queensland winter are almost over!
Good job mate! Keep it up
Wish I had a 7in grinder
Bought a v16 and I’m in the same boat got quotes to re do the floor and they want to charge me more than what it costs to buy a restored one Appreciate these vids
It's absolutely gut-wrenching, hey. not just the disappointment in the cost/waste of money but missing out on heaps of time fishing. if you are looking to go to the effort to rebuild yourself go look at these channels: exhale adventures adventures adrift angry mack they really showed me that it's actually an achievable goal
Cheers man I’ll be sure to keep up with your channel and check out the others Thanks legend
Wish you’d rub down and acetone the inside of my skin
Good video mate, keep them coming 🔻
Absolutely well done for a first video mate. Now with the new film ability, I would love to see more of the entire process. Would encourage a talk through on places/things that you felt were easier than thought, or hit a hurdle in the build. Hopefully it all goes to plan. I'm staying tuned for the next piece of this build. Great stuff 👍
