DND episode 4 - AD&D
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
This video is part of my 'Edition Wars' series, taking a look at Dungeons and Dragons across the various versions released from 1974 onwards.
A quick canter through the three core rulebooks, which were the Monster Manual (1977), the Player's Handbook (1978), and the Dungeon Master's Guide (1979). Although my books are not always first printing copies. I hoped to do a more detailed look but I may have to consider that when talking about the rest of the "1e" product line.

JOYTOY Terminator Chaplin
มุมมอง 574 หลายเดือนก่อน
My third figure from JoyToy, the awesome looking Chaplin in Terminator armour. How does it compare to the guard and the Ork Nobz? Whilst this is another expensive figure, although not outrageous in relative terms, it just looked to good to not grab as part of my first steps into the range. A flawed beauty of a bigature, with some potential for awesome poses and weapon load outs. Toy Toy and GW ...
JOYTOY Ork Commando Nobz

The reason I decided to buy some Joy Toy 40k figures, the Orks. These are large and impressive looking "bigatures", standing over 11cm tall and bulky like a terminator. Well sculpted and painted. However, they come with less accessories and reduced posing options vs the Imperial Guard. It is also twice the price, making a bit harder to justify buying. A fun character piece and I am glad I have ...

The Making of D&D - a light review of the Book

WotC's "definitive" book about the making of D&D. A lush deluxe product packed with high quality scans of the original books and supplements plus a few articles. Covering the pre 1974 era up to around 1977. This is a light review and skim of the book, I give my opinion on the pros and cons of this 50th Anniversary book about DnD as it was prior to AD&D 1st Edition. Don't forget to like, subscri...

Man you could do a great second edition "the Hopkins initiative" set in the civil war as agents of Mathew Hopkins witchfinder general vs the mages of Charles the first.
Well if Paul doesn't do it, there is Sanction and Genre Setups
How tall is the figure please
1/18 Scale so 4.21 inches (10.7 cm)
@trebormills cheers bud I'm trying to work out scale for some stuff I'm printing for my own joytoy collection of primaris marines but don't own any of the "normal" size people at that scale lol
We had 2 questions: Both the alien and Internal Affairs Judge win ties, what happens when they tie each other? Can you have a perp on a space without a crime?
Normally a tie is a stand off, so potentially if both break a tie that is basically a tie. I cant lay my hands on the rulebook to check if there is any special mention. Normally a perp is placed on a crime. However, I do recall some weirdness from the original game where a perp and crime get separated, maybe an action card. So normally no, a perp is with a crime.
10:49, Sphinx card is rare. Goes for a few dollars.
Thanks, I haven't been tracking prices for cards
@@trebormills You enjoy playing the game. That is the correct way to enjoy the hobby. People go nuts over chase cards and foild and alt art.
I love the Tékumel worldsetting and evrything in it. It truly is smth special and a breath of fresh air. Not just another medievel setting (not a bad thing but overused). So yea. Great job. Well explained. Keep up the work.
It is a very intriguing setting, with a nice mix of Fantasy and SciFi
Don't agree with the bit about white guys being triggered if you don't want to offend people, you won't be bothered by the disclaimer. However definitely agree with the comments about the printing some of the typing is way to small to read and some of the typed material is so faint you can hardly read it i am currently on page 39!
It is a very mixed bag of a book
Great review. Just getting into Bethorm.
Thanks, hope you have fun with the game
Thanks for the video! 🎉🎉
Thanks
Thanks for showing these tiles..u know how they give u blank ones...i just painted 4 archer tiles😂
Enjoy
Pretty funny that you repeatedly called 'In the Labyrinth' by the name 'Into the Labyrinth' even when the rulebook cover with the correct name was on the screen. 'Into the Labyrinth' was, of course, the 1980 ITV fantasy series produced by Bob Baker and starring Ron Moody. Yes, the same year. Memory is an interesting thing.
Well it isn't a proper video without a gaff
I'm excited that West End Games is releasing D6 System Second Edition! They are going through Kickstarter right now. I would love to watch a video from you covering your thoughts on the upcoming update!
I spotted that, a new take on a classic. Be interesting to see the support the KS gets
Thankyou for reviewing the contents of this game - I am looking forward to the new Lightraiders game just being released now, June 2024.
Yes, it should be shipping soon. Be interesting to see what has changed and what stayed the same
Amazing that someone produced a game more or less the same as something I’ve been running on and off for years based on the 4 elements and my love of tarot cards. I must have a look at this
The original can be found for sale for a reasonable amount. The new version is better laid out but a bit pricey.
I remember buying thsi at 20 years old...
I remember staring at it alongside Powers and Perils. Managed to grab both many years later
I agree about the needless complication of including the card draw system. Nicely done with your reorganized rules. I myself am having a bit of difficulty thoroughly understanding the rules as written. Lots of flipping back and forth so far. To be clear, I'm still really excited about it.
It has become one of my favourite games, I hacked it a lot. The rules have recently got spun off as Sanction, allowing you to make a genre setup.. basically a setting book. They say you are sometimes harshest on what you love the most. That is probably the case here. I do recommend it as a game.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm just reading through tge rules now. The setting is very much appealing to me.
There is a lot of fun to be had with the setting
Where is the Winds of Whitefall adventure (can you respond with the link?).
Sadly the website it was on might have vanished. If i find my old bookmark I will let you know
@@trebormills That would be most appreciated!
@captainnolan5062 The website is now offline, but wayback machine has an archive web.archive.org/web/20041105143143/www.gla.ac.uk/~clubs/gaming/stuff/everway.htm
Mixed feelings on pressure. Undoubtedly loved Those Dark Places for its lethal and gritty atmosphere, but undoubtedly a flawed system Kind of annoyed they removed the 4-3-2-1 stat spread and went for point buy instead, I honestly found it a lot more entertaining *forcing* players to make that difficult decision of choosing what skills to be good/bad at. With point buy, generally everyone will prefer to make their character's more level and less interesting Otherwise, the game is better in some places, worse in others... Which i just realized is a very effective strategy to get players to buy both, lol
Just use the 4,3,2,1 method. I think it does get mentioned in the rules at some point
Sadly no rerelease of Chainsaw Warrior. I even made a two player coop modus for the game.
I miss old GW, before the fall of White Dwarf and support for just whfb/40k. At least we are getting new stuff and some reprints
@@trebormills I played again for about 2 month now after having the for 33 years. The game had some logical flaws. So i overworked all rules. Changed what makes no sense to me. Now, i am sure it is a better game. And we had a lot if fun with my coop rule gir two players. Two warriors against Darkness villains 😎
Thanks for the video! Happy 50th to you too!
Wonder what the next fifty years will bring
It’s something amazing, to be sure.
0e is sometimes underated, it had a lot of stuff buried in the core books. IMO, the supplements are a nice extra but not a 100% need
How do you feel about Osprey games in general? Just found out about them and both Pressure and Paleomythic seem like very cool settings to have in your back pocket even for other systems.
They make high quality books and a lot of the games are very interesting settings or mechanics. Some games get great support whilst others get almost nothing. Jackals seems to have a lot of support. Sadly they often sell pdfs at a high price, but don't bundle it with the hardback. Thankfully the pdfs can be found on dtrpg and sometimes at cheaper price vs direct (same with Amazon for physical). Overall I like them but hope they commit a bit more to the products. I don't need extra physical books but PDFs would be nice
Osprey Games are awesome. Have almost all their ttrpgs.
@@trebormills Let me add that I've just discovered Osprey's Kindle products... and they are amazing. They are actually native Kindle format rather than the trash PDF-on-Kindle books, which are awful on any screen size except the larger tablets. I don't know about Amazon UK Kindle book pricing, but the US pricing for PRESSURE (for instance) is about US $9.99... which is much less than the PDF price ($17.50 on dtrpg). The same holds true for much of Osprey's library. The Kindle version is reasonably priced for the quality of gaming material. Most importantly, it's a native Kindle format. Meaning, I can re-size the text and re-flow the pages to fit on a small device, like a mobile phone. That alone is worth the price of admission. It's AMAZING to have native Kindle format roleplaying books that I can carry and read in a mobile phone while I'm on the train or whatever. Skip the PDF. BUY the Kindle format, IMO. I can't say enough good things about Osprey's Kindle books for those of us who like digital format.
Would you say it is worth to get both of them or just Pressure? I had originally played those dark places but didn't buy it because I didn't like the lack of character options and advancement, would you say it's still a worthy purchase for the lore (what little of it was in it anyway) or should I just get Pressure and be done with it?
I feel Pressure has more lore and playable options and as such is the sensible pick up. Having grabbed yourself a copy you need to consider if you'd rather spend the money on the adventures rather than a lovely but mostly redundant older version of the core game. As a fan I would get both but the sensible option is not to, just get Pressure and port across what you can from TDP. However, if the pdf goes on sale later.....then I would grab TDP as it has a few nice extras (nice to have but not need to)
@@trebormills Thanks, I did enjoy TDP but I just didn't feel it was worth to get since it was mostly geared towards one shots and short campaigns with static characters, Pressure seems to have fixed that.
@@paulll47 it is still a lite game, but has options to tease out a bit more campaign play. I feel it does address some concerns people might have re TDP, although it may struggle to do epic multi year campaign play. Although I fear that is something young me did that older me will struggle to emulate. However, for a shorter campaign the rules now have options to develop the PCs over time and sessions, assuming they don't pick a fight and get gunned down in a hail of gunfire
@@trebormills I usually tend to run campaigns of about 6 months or a year tops, did that with other Osprey titles too (Sigil and shadow in particular lends itself really well to long campaigns), I would be happy with Pressure if it could handle a 3 months campaign tbh, thanks for all the replies btw.
Great video, looking forward to getting a game 😁
I just needs some BRAINS and then I can run it...shuffle into a game (pencilled in for 2024)
Thank you. A new campaign on the horizon, so I found myself watching your entire series. Thanks!
Exciting stuff could be on the way with new board game and rpg stuff!
Nice review, I did play it for a while... but struggle getting it going online unfortunately... I think the system does have a bit of a strange relationship with the way the setting is presented, as the combat stuff makes it feel more cinematic streetfighter/matrix style which does not always fit the more world of darkness feel I get from it. If you push the wierd/magic and action plots, it can definately be a nice game. But it doesn't fit the online environment that easily/conveniently sadly :\ I wish it got a bit more popularity then it did, so they might have thrown a new edition out..but I doubt they will at this point. Even Edge was about to remove the pdf from sale entirely, and send them a mail to bring it back on sale. (I noticed it was gone, and after a mail to inquire about it they put it back up). Sadly they never added the Eratta/FAQ as a pdf up on drivethrugh either... Don't think it had massive success, so it's likely to be forgotten about rather then anyone seeing much reason to revive it. Good to see some youtube love of the game on rare occasion though! I definately remember the fond times I had with it.
A great setting, with a decent but flawed ruleset. They hopefully will keep the PDFs up and add the missing ones (the errata in particular is needed). I have toyed with the idea of porting the setting to other rule systems
Love the cover, it is amazing.
It did have some great imagery
Very nice video. The new version of TFT has big improvements. Better system for learning talents and spells, better talents to reward tough fighters, and a better XP system. Warm regards, Rick.
Thanks
where to buy this?
They had a lot of old 1984 stock which you could buy off the web (lightraiders). However, it is now sold out and OOP, apparently they only had 1 copy left in Jan of this year. So ebay or people with the odd copy on the shelves is your only option. A 2e is supposed to be in the works but I haven't heard much about a firm release date. I think i heard 2023/24 for a push to get it done.
Lightraider academy has just launched the second edition as a project on Backerit. Its now called Lightraiders RPG (adventure bible system)
I've got the core rules from last edition and a bunch of pdf's. I don't need this. *Watches video* I NEED THIS! 😆
Morganna rubs hands in glee, mission accomplished.
@@trebormills Mademe Morganna?
I'm definitely excited to check this out. I just got the box, but it may be a bit before I can read it.
It's a great game, I also need a good chunk of time to give it a good old read
My soft cover finally arrived. Some very interesting material here.
Its got some really great top tips and ideas. I did think about grabbing a softcover for transport/use...keep the lovely hardback as my precious
This looks really well put together. I may need to give it a go.
I was impressed by how much they packed into a slim box
I like the way you play - the way we played Blackmoor with Dave Arneson back in 1970-74 before D&D came out. Rukes? There are no rules! The GM sets the rules!
Rule 0 Also 'no rules' can be 100% comprehensive
🤔 Wouldn't this be close to the Liminal rpg ? Seems like it.
Similar setting vibe
I noticed that the skills are the fruit of the spirit in galatians 5
Nice spot, the game is both a workable rpg and has hooks into scripture.
Appreciate the quick, concise videos!
I try to keep them short and sweet.. sometimes with success
I met Prof MAR Barker back in the 1970s. I had no clue he was anti-Semitic. He was willing to answer questions from a fat teenager who loved the EPT game better than D&D. I even went to his home one afternoon and played in his personal campaign. I had Swords and Glory #1 and #2 and heard there was an unpublished #3. Usually I used the EPT rules and S&G #1 for background. In the early 2000s, I played in a campaign run by one who had played for years in one of Prof Barkers groups, but I don't remember which of the two nights anymore. This gamer used Big Eyes Small Mouth rules. Though I had fun in two different AD&D campaigns and one based on the original three books and supplements, my favorite Fantasy gaming was in the Tekumel world. I read The Man of Gold novel by Barker. I thought it was better than the couple of AD&D novels I tried to read.
It is a rich and interesting setting, EPT by tsr is still the one to beat imo. Although there are a few unofficial games out there as well
And people say 4th edition is crunchy! 😆
Crunch lite vs crunch excel sheet required
😝 *Promosm*
Epic quests await
i got 2 copies and sadly never been able to find anyone willing to play. sadly 1 set was in a house fire and have a little smoke damage, that just fit the dragon setting
I think it's a great setting idea, weird modern era with the option to flashback to heroic mythical era or beyond to actual dragons. Guess it might need to crank up the weird more...pretend its modern day Cthulhu, accidentally mis pronounce Dragon as Dagon
Great videos looking forward to seeing more in the future
Still need to read the GM guide fully. On my growing to do list
Interesting. I had no idea a KS was made this, nor that it was still supported. I played Jyhad back in the day. Great game.
They have lots of great content released
I've read this now and really like it. I'm looking to run this online if anyone is interested.
It does seem to be a fun game
So expensive and there is no way to store everything back in the box properly? Also Hasbro had no money to produce it right and even had to make a kickstarter?! Love the game, wanted to buy, but all I see is money grab and no care whatsoever for gamers. Going to pass, not my 100 euros Hasbro. Thanks for the video btw.
Thankfully its in retail and Amazon has reduced the price to expensive but not outrageous If you keep the expansions separately then everything does fit in the base box without too much trouble. Alternatively you can sort of throw everything in loose to shut the lid
⚔️ 🤗 🔝 🥰 🆒 😉 ⚔️
I shall consult the oracle and decipher these dwarven runes
Your hypothesis is that offering less options will prevent powergaming? I think that reducing players' choices as you see in the Hero's handbook narrows the field to the point that you can't help but powergame, even if by accident. If what you mean is that lowering the choices puts all the players on more equal footing, I would agree. However the full rules provide a great breadth of roleplay options. If some of your players are prone to min/maxing, they're going to do it, and removing options will just force the players who want to focus on roleplay to make the same or similar choices as the powergamers, reducing the game to a combat heavy event if the GM wants to run the game based on the players' sheets.
Interesting observation, I meant less options helped with not getting overwhelmed and made PCs be on a more equal footing. Re min maxers, my current group are not power gamers. An old group from ten years ago had a few.
@@trebormills I understand.
Pathfinder 2 really learns the most from the best and worst of Pathfinder 1, and they have really cut down on the power gaming by being very deliberate on how bonuses stack. There are only three bonus types and multiple bonuses of the same type don't stack for example. There are a lot of other safeguards as well.
I had heard they had fixed some issues in pf2e. Thanks for clarifying how.
