Dancing Sandhill Cranes, Bosque Del Apache, NM
Photographed in November 2018 at Bosque Del Apache, New Mexico. This pair of Sandhills was the only two I saw that did the Sandhill mating dance. I suppose the male is the one circling the female.
This was created from 144 separate still images using a handheld Nikon D500 and Nikon 500mm 5.6 E PF lens shooting mostly at 10 frames per second. It is not true video which would be shot at around 24 fps. So the video is a bit jumpy and I followed the action up and down and sideways.
Enjoy and comments welcome.

One River Otter
มุมมอง 99314 ปีที่แล้ว
Photographed at White Pines Lake near Arnold, California on Jan 22, 2011. Usually there is a family of 5 otters in the lake this time of year but today I only found the one otter. Half way through he gets buzzed by 4 ducks that were trying to move into his area on the lake.
River Otters

Filmed at White Pines Lake near Arnold, California on January 3, 2010. This a was a family of 5 river otters. I used a Canon 5D M2 camera with a 400mm lens plus a 1.4 converter making it a 560mm lens. The video is shaky in some clips due to using a very light weight Gitzo tripod and a Ultimate ball head which is terrible for panning video. The periodic clicks you here are from the ability of th...
Northern Flicker, Woodpecker
มุมมอง 4.4K15 ปีที่แล้ว
Photographed at my neighbor's house in Arnold, California. This Flicker followed her home from a walk, then stayed on the deck to be hand fed and handled. Very unusual. We cannot figure if it is a young Flicker or female
David Beautifully done! I recommend doing another one earlier in the morning when the lighting is great
Thanks but I now live in Arizona!
Greetings from Glenview, Illinois. Flying to Vegas this week. After a few days, gonna drive to Tonopah and then take this route west towards San Fran. Thanks for the great glimpse of what I can expect.
Beautiful and relaxing
Hey!!! I live in arnold!
Thank you Wendy!
In 1982, my boyfriend and I took this ride in his '65 Mustang convertible, and even as teens, we were stunned at the beauty all around us! Just gorgeous, thank you!
Oh my. America the beautiful. Stunning video and the music was just fabulous. Greetings from Scotland.
Thank you!
A truly beautiful & colorful video, outstanding work!
use to be able to get to an old open put gold mine off that road, still gad the buildings and old news papers from the 60s
Beautiful, thank you
Thanks! I have only seen them there and other ponds around Arnold in the Winter. But I have been told they do come into White Pines once in a while in the summer.
My Wife and I saw three near the shore opposite the Public Beach about noon 12/31/2018
A pleasure.
Thanks for the great video
What a beautiful film. Your photo's are terrific I'm familiar enough with Highway 4 that your film is a drive down memory lane. Thanks
Love the video... Wondered if you'd like to join our Flicker group on Facebook and share it with the group.. We are having a lot of fun sharing videos, pictures, stories about this beautiful bird species.. The group called Northern Flicker Awareness... Hope to see you there
Very cute and beautiful video
Great video thank you!
They do seem like friendly birds. Thanks for the comment, I do not do videos often. Where are you located? Dave
Very well done. I believe a female as the male will have some red on the back of his head even before flying. We have two now just starting to fly around the house. Still not able to feed themselves in the wild. We hand feed grub worms, dog food and poached egg, blueberry and give water with a syringe. I think we can release into our big oak trees in a week or so and hope they make out without their Mom to help. Their tree was cut down and the cutters brought them to us.
I agree. Looks like a young, little female.
I'm not really an expert either but I'd say this is definitely a juvenile. It's still got its downy baby feathers and its colouration hasn't really fully come in yet. I think it's also a female because I'm pretty sure the juvenile males get their red cheeks really young.
good video
cool i live there do you?
I am a snowbird in Tucson, CBT docent, and saw four of these guys two years ago Labor Day as we were doing water quality monitoring. I live on Meadowview Ct. and I am so glad I am here in Tucson now, but really enjoyed your video and your glimpses of our summer home. Your music delightful by the way. THANK YOU! Mary E. Hallesy
what a wonderful little creature! I had one come to where I live as well and hang out...I like watching this vid whenever I need to just relax and get in the mood for a walk in the woods behind my place.
I think it is a young bird... I am not a professional.. but it seems to be lacking feathers.. and some are still short. Plus it is sitting low.. and see the downy like feathers.
Very, very cute. Just this weekend (MLK) they (or a different family) were at Lakemont Pines Lake having a feast! ( Are those two lakes connected?)
Excellent! Beautiful lighting, steady camera work, perfect sound track! Thank you! Larry
WOO HOO the otters are back!! The kids and I are going to run by White Pines tomorrow and see if we can catch a glimpse!! The video is FANTASTIC... thanks for sharing, Dave!
