I build cool rifles in the shop and do custom gun smithing as a hobby and would like to share the old-style gun smithing work with you so that you can try some of these projects on your own because if we don't get young people into this trade, it will definitely be just another thing of the past! DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOUR NOT CONFIEDENT IN YOUR SKILLS! Feel free to reach out if you have questions ether in the comments or on FACEBOOK in messenger.
How to pick the right Handgun for Hunting!
These are a few examples of the handguns I use to hunt with they each have a different job depending on what style of hunting I'm doing. #handguntraining #hunting #revolver357 #customguns

This is just a quick video to catch everybody up on a few things going on in the shop. Actually, I forgot to post it. It's about two weeks old, but there's a few things that are still relevant here.
SAFETY!

Action redesign tips. Enfield, Mauser, Springfield, and dozens of commercial actions are designed in the same way. It's the best practice to keep all of the safety aspects on a firearm, even if you're doing a custom job. #DIY #brownells #customguns #midwayusa

What should you use to remove rust on a gun without stripping the bluing. It's not steel wool!

I have one in a 22lr and 410 but I'm having issues in a couple areas and am having trouble finding parts or seeing a way to fabricate new ones or modify existing. My main issue is the 410 extractor is used and rubbed down so if u slide a shell in too fast or hard it slides up and over the rim and blocks the action from closing. Wondering if you have ever had this issue or know of a way to fix it. My 22lr extractor is a bit sticky as well but my spring is a bit crushed down and I was wondering if stretching it out a bit to get rid of some of the memory or would that completely mess with the integrity of the spring. Thanks for the video, very small resources on this firearm.
@gabrieltaylor3433 I think the spring is probably OK on the 22 side. Just clean everything up good and remove any burrs that might keep things from running smoothly. The extractor for the 410 bbl probably just needs adjusted upward slightly.
@gabrieltaylor3433 I appreciate the comment. If you need anything else, just holler and let me know when it's working.
@Indiancreekgunsmithing I can send you picture of the face of it and it's shiny from overuse and almost looked polished from how worn down it is. I'm also not sure how I could move it up to prevent that from happening besides bending the actual extractor arm and possibly causing binding other places.
Long range shots at game should be illegal
@Siskiyous6 I was shooting at a rock, my friend.
You can pretty much write your own ticket as far as modifications on those old military actions. Just stay away from the locking lug areas or anything that secures the bolt. Why all the holes in the right side of that action? Enfield actions are pretty strong.
Absolutely, when I do my 416 R. I'll use a modern custom action I do like messing with the military stuff, but the Enfield parts are getting tough to source. Thank you for the comment!
I have built several of those kits. Mostly Ballard and Sharps. Working on a Borchardt now in 38-72 Win. Be ware of shrinkage on some parts especially internal small parts. If it is a Storie kit they are pretty good. Patience is the key with kit building. Take it a step at a time and think your way through. You will get there...
Unfortunately its back burnered until I ship this 375 off to the engraver.
I started with a Craftsman lathe many years ago. Did a boat load of work with it over the years. The 375 H H is a good old school round. Should work well with that Mauser action. I just subscribed by the way...
I appreciate it! I plan to do a video on a couple smaller lathes that would be great to start on.
Stick a wet rag into the back of the bolt body, and leave some of the rag hanging out the back. Have a squirt bottle of water handy so you can keep the rag wet. When you heat up the bolt handle the wet rag will keep the cocking notch in the back of the bolt from annealing. So long as the rag is giving off steam its drawing the heat away from the bolt. I think that you might have drawn the temper from the back end of your bolt and the cocking notch. If that's the case, heat the effected area up until it just starts to glow orange, then dunk the bolt into a can of used motor oil. (be careful of flames and have something ready to cover the can and smother it if it starts burning) This will re-harden the back of the bolt. After you do this you'll probably have to clean the carbon scale off with some steel wool.
@marktroxler6798 It never got to hot to touch at the cocking piece notch. But if I show any wear signs, I know what to do. Thank you!
I made that sign!
Amazing work Dallas!! Thank you!
Liked and subscribed looks like good quality metal work and I very much appreciate quality craftsmanship. All the best man
@skookumlife4610 I appreciate that. I've had an extremely busy few weeks and I haven't been able to do much in the shop.
Not to bad there my brother. Didn’t know you had some blacksmithing in you.
The strange thing is, here in a few counties here in Virginia. Believe it or not. It is illegal to hunt with a pistol. Sucks doesn’t it?
@DeepCreekIronWorks Yeah, that's a bummer. I didn't think to mention in Iowa we were straight wall cartridges for years since they have lossened up on that so that now it's anything over 35 cal. A 35 Rem would probably be a dandy handgun cartridge for deer.
What is your biggest encore caliber?
Talk to your local fire department, see if they have any old turnout gear they'll sell you. The coat makes a good FR blanket. Keep it up!
@hillbillynick2000 That's a good idea. I have a buddy on the FD I'll ask.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Enjoy the journey.
What do you have for a lathe?
@@blakemcmanus3479 It's a rebuild Craftsman 101. I'd like to do a video on it one of these days.
Horn
I did a follow up video and never uploaded it. I'll try to load it tomorrow. Thank you.
“Taking out your face”…..Now there’s an image…..lol
That kind of thing could happen.
Nice hat man
Looks better, doesn't it.

Well I don't much like to brag. But that farmer was my granddad. Taught me everything there us to know about hunting. Just call me ole sure shot.
If you still live in the area, let's grab a coffee in Grandview.
I worked with a guy who told me a similar story. He said that he was discharged from the airforce back in the 60s and when he got home he wanted to go hunting but all he had was a single shot. 22. When a pheasant flushed he said that he got just the righ swing on it and downed it. With a head shot as I remember.
I have a over and under also
The trigger pull on mine was too heavy. How's yours.?
1..In the states l know, its illegal to shoot birds with a rifle. 2.. I had a combo gun, but got rid of it, because the pull was hard, and caused the rifle to be inaccurate. If you lighten the pull for the rifle, it could ruin it as a shotgun.
It was legal in Iowa at the time.
@dmc4795 Is rifle shooting of pheasants, allowed in Iowa now.?
Irresponsible to shoot a rifle up in the air like that !!!
I didn't do it. Like I said in the video, I was a little boy at the time.
I like recoil
Is Asiatic water buffalo horn. Available at Petco as dog chew toys. Very brittle. Used extensively on Continental guns English use it on forend tips and accents.
I wondered about that. Thank you! I appreciate it.
At least I know where to get replacement material.
Looks like Bakelite. Need a closer slower examination
I'll see if I can post a picture in the comments. Thank you.
Could be bakelite, or possibly gutta-percha, or even horn. That's a sweet old gun.
Thanks! It is a sweet one.
Bakealite maybe, I am probably spelling it wrong.
Ivory?
I had one just like that on my hip hog hunting right out of college. I heard one grunting but never saw one while we were gun hunting. We did chase a few down with dogs the next day.
That sounds fun! Did you get some?

Can you load it back up and show how to use an air compresser?
Yeah I could do that.
Thanks. I always appreciate your comments and support.
Thanks for this! I actually just bought the screw adapter so I can feel comfortable going to the range with my muzzleloader!! Good honest video!
What game is a 375 H&H good for? Isn't that an old-school safari round?
Yes it is! We are planning a safari in the next couple of years!
A fella at elk camp uses a pre 64 Win Model 70 in 300 H&H it might be fun to take it out west also.
What are your plans with the 375 H&H?
Safari!

That's what I hear.

It's pretty cool. It doesn't appear to be shot very much.

What would you do to prevent the rust from coming back on the raw steel if you are working on this project over a long period of time?
Just put some oil on it during storage. A little buffing will clean it up if it's left raw for a little while.
I used whole copper dish sponge to clean the inside of my 45-70 the last time I went to the range. Did a great job!!
Finally got to watch the whole video! I never though of using a smaller caliber casing for my 45-70! Great idea!!
I've been seeing lots of turkeys lately in SE Iowa
I've been busy the last couple of weeks, but I did get out to the shop tonight and drill the hinge pin holes. Believe it or not, they even line up!
I love your horse in the background!
That was my grandfather's. He won it in Illinois, showing one of his geldings. I know it's not gunsmithing, but I'd like to fix it in a video.
Can't wait to see more!
