I tried to hike to the summit of Black Mountain in San Diego via the Gliderport Trail (officially named the Glider Point Trail). It didn't go quite as expected, but getting to see the paragliders made up for not making it to the summit.

Great Video, wish i would have seen this before I left to due it. When I arrived I got the gate and it was locked, thought they must have closed it. I know to go in the camp ground to the Kiosk. Would have saved me 50 mins each way today.
I've been there! No bueno.
Hey how are the conditions on this trail currently? Has the recent rainy season made it any more challenging?
I haven't been up there yet this year. You might check with the forest service. It's probably fine, would be my guess.
Truly beautiful trail my friend, this looks gorgeous!
Just found a new trail. I’m about to check out. It’s called Foster truck Trail. Foster Truck Trail Ramona, CA 92065 United States
I’m going now
🤘🤘🤘
I’m going tomorrow. I go thru dog Junction by the gun range
How did it go brother?!
Thanks for making this!!
Thought this place looks so dope for scooter riding
Great video. Thanks for making this!
Good video. Now don't take this badly, in Spanish the J is pronounced like an H (like with La Jolla). And Tierrasanta is one word. Cowles is pronounced by the locals as Cow-els, which is probably wrong, but most commonly used.
BRO THERES 2 OF THEM IN MY DRIED OUT HOT TUB
sucks he has to be around all that pressure treated wood instead of more natural material though
Nice southern alligator it looks like still has his full tail my girl doesn't she was like that when I found her but she's living large now! Cool find!
Can you ride dirtbikes there ?
I think as long as they are street legal.
@@Outdoorsocal Awhh 😭 I just got a new bike and don’t know where to ride it. On the on X off-road app says dirtbikes are allowed but when I talk to people they say no dirtbikes
@@_XOXOLOVELESS In cooler months, you could try Ocotillo Wells SRVA in Anza Borrego. Or try the Corral Canyon OHV www.outdoorsocal.com/posts/corral-canyon-ohv/ or the Lark Canyon OHV in McCain Valley www.outdoorsocal.com/posts/mccain-valley/
Do you know if OHV like a RZR is allowed up these trails?
Only if it's street legal, I think. Might need to check with BLM on that.
Not for super fat people!
I was fortunate to be able to do this hike a couple of years ago when my son was managing a resort in Borrego. It was very difficult for a 70 year old woman and you have to be a contortionist at times and not have a problem with claustrophobia. At that time going up a steep sliding sands hill was the exit if you don't go back the way you came in.
Thanks man!! Did the pio pico entrance on Wednesday, met 3 different border patrol but only one other driver. It is insanely beautiful this time of year, so green. I seen a ton of shotgun shells after turning left on the 3 way split, can you shoot along that area or just down on sycamore?
I'll bet it's nice out there right now. I Need to get back up there! I'm not sure about where you can shoot.
Thank you for sharing this. We’re hiking Torrey Pines with kids next week and found your video super helpful for our planning.
Glad it was helpful. Have fun!
This looks like a great location for camping with so many great options. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for the video, first timer going to try it this week . Is it necessary to deflate the tires just for the regular main road?
Have fun! You don't really need to deflate your tires for traction reasons. I generally do because it makes the ride more comfortable.
@@Outdoorsocal ok cool, yea I’ve seen posts saying a 2wd could make it easily enough on the main trail but just wanted to make sure . I have a compressor so I might just do it for the comfort ride also. Thank you for the reply! I’m super excited lol
Just did palm canyon a couple days ago and it was great rn. Water is flowing with waterfalls, frogs, and the plants are are blooming.
Thanks for opening this up for me. Can't wait to conquer all the easy trails in my Forester.
good video
That's great! Hope you had a good hike.
We did this hike today and had questions you answered in the video. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to hit that area
I visited Torrey Pines for the first time yesterday and this was so helpful in planning my trip -- thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Hope you and a great visit.
Thanks for this vid, I did this trail today. Tried to get it from Pio Pico camp grounds but the kiosk lady wouldn’t give me the code, she said they were doing some investigation there. Got directions to Merrum Valley Rd and went that way. Tacos were pretty dang good too👍
Glad you found a way i!
Heading there soon! I can’t wait!
Heading there this weekend! Thank you. I feel more prepared
Right on! Have fun.
How long did this trail take for you to walk there and back total?
It's about 15-20 minutes each way, depending on whether you explore side trails etc along the way.
Thanks!
I have a 4runner 4wd and it’s stock, can go to this trail? I’m a newbie in off roading. And by the way, what’s the address of this trail because I was trying to search but couldn’t find it. Thanks!
You should be fine. Just check that it's open if you are trying to go in the rainy season. It's often closed when wet.
I’d been all over the desert here off roading, hiking and hunting for years. I saw my first Big Horns that had come down to drink water from a guzzler located near the Chocolate Mountains near Hwy 111. Was about 10 years ago and we came upon them in our side by side. Couldn’t believe it. Great video
I have done Nate at least 100 times. As one of the many offroad routes in southern california the ONLY thing this road has to reccomend it is that it is practically the only game in town in this area/this side of palomar mountain mainly because there is no route available to get to the fantastic dirt roads on the OTHER side of the mountain....WHY? Because any pass is gated via the infinite wisdom of the paranoids that control the observatory (s) I only ever road motorcycles the only fun thing was to challenge my average speed which was at best right around 30mph average ....which requires riding pretty fast I dont think I came across maybe one other person doing that pace (also a motorcycle) the 4 wheelers crawl by comparison...which is GOOD lol!
Can you use a green sticker jeep there? Thanks
Honestly, I'm not sure. Give the BLM office a call 760-833-7100
I have been to that mine. It is awesome. Great background.
Lousy with weird Canadians though...
Paul the owner is a great guy and makes some mean BBQ and jalapeno pickles. :)
What’s it like in January??
It's often closed due to rain/wet conditions. Check the NFS for info on closures.
Shelf roads always make feel a little scared because i have encountered on-coming traffic and everything in my body says "oh shit, there's nowhere to pass!" I wish more of them were designated as one way. Anyway, thanks for this vid. Great overview.
Couldn't agree more. One that really gets to me is Oriflamme Canyon - a shelf road that makes you lean out over the drop at times due to rough terrain. Yikes!
@@Outdoorsocaloriflamme is one that I have been eyeing. I am a relative beginner, but confident enough in some trails in my Tacoma. Plenty of pass points for my mental wellbeing is always appreciated.
It's not super technical, but it does have a high pucker factor 😅
Is it an official ohv road? I want to drive my can am there.
I think you can only drive street legal vehicles on the road. But not sure. Call the Palomar Ranger District office of the National Forest Service and they can tell you.
I'm very impressed - you got a lotta guts driving through THAT terrain - makes me nauseous just WATCHING it! And your wife and son deserve credit for sticking by your side!
hey, I went today and was met with "no offroad vehicle activity" signs. Did something change?? I entered with a motorcycle so I didn't need a lock at the gate. a few feet into the trail, there is a second gate, it was also open but the signs discouraged me and I drove back out.
Guessing that means no non-street legal off-road vehicles. But not sure. It would be a significant change if they weren't letting street legal trucks and motorcycles on the trails.
I think it just means to stay on the trails.
Can I take my dirt bike out there? Looks like it has great technical trails. Just moved to SD, so I don't know the trail scene as well.
Honestly, I'm not sure. It may need to be a street legal bike - I've never seen a motorcycle out there.
Got to love that "Onza" Borrego park...😅
Can 2WD do the rocky trail ?? Off the main trail?
Hmm. I've only done it in a 4x4 so can't really say. Not sure I'd try it myself. Maybe I'll give it a go with the Jeep in 4WD next time I'm there and report back...
when are you going to OTAY next? id love to tag along!
We tend to hit Otay in the late spring and early fall, when its still too hot to go to the desert (summer), but not too hot in the Otay area. That said, I'll try to remember to hit you up. Send me a DM with your contact info.
That was 4
You're right! Apparently I was aspiring to more - or just can't count 🤣
@@Outdoorsocal No worries… I like the video and gave it a like
Very nice there.
I went to find the beginning by the pio pico tv site today. It was getting late tho so I couldn’t give a try. I current got a Subaru wilderness and wanted to try its chops. Any recommendation for beginners? Was this trail too extreme?
You should be fine if you stay on the many truck trail. Wouldn't recommend the more technical trails - Suicide Hill etc. Also, avoid the side routes like Upper and Lower Ridge.
@@Outdoorsocal thanks for the info.
Any idea if you can camp there?
I've seen people camping at the top. Not sure about the legalities of it. I want to say it's national forest, so you're probably supposed to get a dispersed camping permit.
