Ravens - outta Ft. Wayne - Nov. '67 - some say they changed the name to the Revens as there was another Ravens (South Bend). As with the previous Revens - Ravens presentation, you will hear, lousy mastering gives the lovely jangle tune a odd sound. Stark Naked & the Car Thieves! One of Indianapolis' most famous unknown bands. From 1963 as the Aristocrats / Reflections / Illusions / Checkmates / to finally "Stark Naked & the Car Thieves", what a ride it was. Check those harmonies, b-side, 1968!

big red with the music project. I suspect that this is early '68 with a definite slant toward bubblegum style. Writer credits to Paul Hertel, (who owned the South Bend label). Tantalizingly close to Paul Bartels (and if you get that reference, I should be your fan!). This is the B-side and is easier on the ears than the "you turn me on" plug side.

That's one of the best hippie band names ever.
The singer is real similar to Debbie Harry, though she came along much later obviously..
The song's average for the time, but the band uniforms are hard to ignore. Or forget.
'Jangle' music. I never heard that term before, but I understood it as soon as the music started. It's a pleasant little song, but their harmony's not arranged all that well, and I don't think it's the mastery. Maybe it's because I'm expecting Beatles vocals.
Something in between The Beatles and Beach Boys? I've heard the songs of The Byrds described by the terms jangler, jangly, jingle jangle.
@@thomassmith8721 No, based on the musical style and the vocal profiles, I'm pretty sure I'm leaning Beatles.
@@bwilliams463 I said between Beatles and Beach Boys, but the Fab Four prevail.
Thanks for posting this
The lead singer must be playing the tambourine. Whoever it is, they're standing RIGHT NEXT to the mic.
great stuff!
A few comments here bagging this recording , but I disagree , for although it is by no means brilliant , it is nonetheless pleasantly melodic and better than a lot of the cachophonous , amelodic , shrieking and screaming BS that typifies popular music these days .
This sucks.
I'd love to hear the B-Side "Burn The Midnite Oil" if you don't mind posting it.
Is it possible to post the B-side as well "In The Rain"?
Done...
What is the b-side?

Does anyone know if there is a difference in mastering or sound quality between the 45 on Phalanx and the one on RCA, or did RCA use the same metal plates?
Interesting query - be honest I never did an A/B check. Different matrix numbers - Phalanx has hand etched #'s, the RCA has machine stamped. I'll check.
OK, recorded both with the exact same equipment / levels / programs. The RCA is measurably hotter on the levels. With the different run-out styles, I'd guess RCA had the tapes and made their own stampers. Your mileage may vary...
@@vinylfool Yup, makes sense as RCA made their own master and stamper specifically for AM transistor radio airplay.
Beautiful I going hear every day I want know the words
Thank you
See me
This sounds like a 1965 garage tune, not something from "67. I hear a bit of the melody of The Beatles" song, "If I Needed Someone" The odd sound is that this sounds like an off key Beatles" tune. Even though the lo-fi mastering gave it a unrefined sound, as if it was actually recorded in a garage, it still came out a jangler.
Wow! An autographed copy!
This song is awesome!
Highly reminiscent of The Beatles' "If I Needed Someone"
Exactly
Love it
It’s Cool how the 🥁 drums Start off which makes this a really cool 😎 tune 🎵. This sounds like early 70’s music 🎼 like 1970-72 😊great song being that’s a 1st 🥇 for me. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Has a bit of the Hollies and Zombies it’s a great Garage Rock 🪨 song 🎧.
righteous. crazy drums and heartbreaking vocal
too sentimental, just too much, just right and i love it
Nice record! This coulda been a hit. Any idea if it did anything in the Indianapolis radio region?
The writers of this song also penned the hits "Happy Together" [#1], "She'd Rather Be with Me" and "She's My Girl" for the Turtles; and "Celebrate" for Three Dog Night.
The group's name came from a Steve Allen TV show bit inspired by popular groups at the time (1967) with names Steve thought had comically nonsensical word juxtapositions, such as Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes. Doing a Mad Libs-type thing, the audience favored putting together "stark naked" and "car thieves," and Steve offered the name to any actual rock group looking for a new identity.
A beautifully produced harmony driven slice of heavenly psych and really loving the swirling farfisa organ vibes😎✌️🎶
You nailed it, buddy.
Nice! 😸

Yea, I know, but I still like it.
Always loved this side!
Russ Sanders was a genius! All the Endd 45s are quite good!
I tend to put up lesser known Indiana 45's, but I love the Endd, so they get a spot!
A MIX OF THE STONES WITH DYLAN
Nice tune ..
I am not upset at the music I’m upset I haven’t heard The Upsetters
very Zombies and taste of early Hollies
The blurry photos of this band performing live really add a lot to hearing this song, and I can't explain it. It's almost like I can see them playing live in my mind's eye
Thanks, I had done videos that way before (when I have photos from the band, not photos from the internet) and viewers seemed annoyed. I prefer it, but your mileage may vary...
classic teener. I think The Reflections did the vocal backing on this single

Total moody organ winner!
Reminiscent of the Zombies' 'She's Not There' (to my ears, at least). I disagree with the percussion arrangement, too; it feels to me like it's stumbling.
Not sure about stumbling but certainly a misfire. Needed a much lighter touch.
@@stevecharman8420 makes it stand out i think
@@alexwalton593 Possibly, but I find it distracting. Listen to Hugh Grundy's playing on 'She's Not There". He plays fractionally behind the beat. A song can't swing when the drummer is right up on the beat.
A very Cool 😎 🎵 tune!!!
Mmmm gravity falls
WOW what A COOL tune
Luckily, no one took a songwriting credit here😅
Good one.
Great for a soul tune 🎵 reminiscent to James Brown.
Awesome! Any release planned for this?
😊😊😊💗💗💕
I have to doubt this, because of the obscurity of this song and band, but it immediately makes me think of the Travelling Wilburys' 'Tweeter And The Monkey Man.' Although the lyrics distinctly echo Hoyt Axton's 'The Pusher.'
