Bill Stegall sent me here ! Great information!
Missed it but watching the replay now.
Very good interview guys. Always entertaining to hear Galewood
What an incredible list of accomplishments and podcast evolution 🎉
It was 3:30 am for me so missed it catching up now 😎
Dang, can’t believe I missed the live! Way to go guys!
Really enjoyed the live format and look forward to more this year! Really amazing data for the growth of CCR this past year 🎉 Also thanks to Max for handling the bg/chats/socials for CCR!!!
Enjoyed this episode. I, like Clint, started with cages/vivaria and then racks came out....and everything got put in racks. Over the past 8 years, I have been keeping most of my animals (bulls, pines, rats, corns, kings) outside in large naturalistic enclosures. This has definitely been a learning experience and not without challenges! I live in the north central area of Louisiana...which doesn't get very cold (I have seen it down to 18 degrees....but usually upper 20's is the coldest lows) but does get very hot (summer of 2023 we had about 2 months straight over 100+). Typical enclosure is about 4x4x2 with about 5-6 inches of loose mulch as a substrate. Enclosures are positioned where they get morning sun and shade or somewhat filtered afternoon sun. Vinyl coated hardware cloth and treated lumber (and plywood) are the construction materials. I will use boards and/or tin to help shade or restrict too much rain from entering in. The enclosures have water, rocks, branches and live plants within them. Animals hibernate and breed in these enclosures....even had an evergaldes rat double clutch this past year. I pulled the first clutch of eggs to incubated them, however the second clutch went unnoticed by me until one day this fall I opened the door to find babies crawling all over the enclosure. About to build a couple more large enclosures (one for bulls and the other for corns) that will be 3x8x3. Most animals kept communally (except kings!).
I really enjoyed this. I’ve heard all of the points you made before, but never all at the same time. People usually just make points that back up their style of keeping, or just over generalize and say sterile racks are good for breeders but everyone else should do naturalistic.
Another great episode guys.
Great episode as usual! Yeah racks are a necessity - loved the idea od the decked out racks with lights and airflow in em, hopefully this style of racks will catch on with more breeding facilities. What about maybe providing out of cage stimulation? It could allow for rack keeping while still caring for the snakes well being - kinda like what bob from green room pythons does but obviously maybe in a more restricted area - could work for small batch breeders
Great point!
About finding the prey - i kept a month old hoggie in a 20 gal decked out 5 inch substrate, background, lighting all that. Me and the hoggie figured out a system - she would burrow for a couple of days then come out to bask - when i saw her basking I knew she'd take food. And she took it! It was kind of scary to have to trust her to come out lol. Great episode! Obviously most neonates won't feel secure i made sure to triple check with the breeder she was an eater 😎
That is a classic example of learning the animal's behavior and making decisions based off of what you see. Great stuff!
Yess lets goo

Great podcast 🔥
This was very informative. What ambient air temp do you recommend?
Parasitic Pentastomes (Raillietiella orientalis), have been conveniently hypothesized by researchers with little evidence but a lot to gain to be introduced by alien Burmese pythons to Florida. The biological function and life cycles of orientalis are identical to native Pentastomes and they can only be ID'D by minor differences in Genomic DNA codes. These parasites pose no more of a threat than the Pentastomes Florida snakes have been dealing with since the dawn of time.
Yes, rhinos on display!!
Where to begin with this crap... One takeaway is how much money is wasted to fund worthless research projects and how poorly researchers understand, the animals, they are studying. People with PHDs are seldom if ever the smartest people in the room. If you need to be taught how to critically think. You weren't that smart to begin with. Pentastome parasites in Burmese pythons are another example of the endless misrepresentation of scientific facts exploited by career-driven researchers. It's both shameful and horrific.
37:28 ha. I say the same thing. The ball python of the colubrids. If you are in early with Hognose you are set.

Great educational discussions!
Loved the podcast, thanks ! 🔥
Good stuff 🙂

48 pairing jeez, I thought I had alot this year with 6 pairings and 4 species. Dealing with that many offspring must be fun 😅
What is never discussed during these "Brainy" discussions are the realities of the scientific community. The use of taxonomy as a political tool. Taxonomy is an area of biological science in which errors, ethical transgressions, and clashes of egos have been particularly vicious and public. Taxonomy/science has long been a career, ego, and cut-throat business that hides behind the sanctimonious halo of advancing knowledge. Phenotypic plasticity is mistaken or by intent ignored, or misrepresented in today's world of speciation. Taxonomist use buzzwords such as biodiversity and conservation in their work. Bolstering the "importance" and probability of funding. Every scientist understands that there is far more funding available to studies that incorporate DNA sequencing than not. They also know that DNA sequencing opens the door much wider to produce self-fulfilling data. The predominant use of DNA to do taxonomical "rapid-fire genetic" change without adequate field study and range assessment, applied consideration of pattern morphs / phenotypic plasticity, low incidence of morphological divergence, or an adequate number of specimens sampled. Essentially how it is done and why the findings are very questionable: Interpopulational relationships through phylogenetic tree-building techniques. Phylogenetic relationships between populations using genetic sequence data incorporate genes, both mitochondrial and nuclear, to assess divergence between populations of organisms. Many genes can be sequenced for perceived differences with a wide range of what each gene can codify, and what it can elucidate in relationships at various classificatory levels. Once the genetic data are assembled, they are submitted to a tree-building algorithm that evaluates the premium topology at thousands of options/alternatives per second. On completion, which may take hours, several alternative phylogenies are offered. These phylogenies are then back-tested, using other algorithms, to produce the most statistically plausible relationship between populations. But, "Algorithms" are not god, or to put it a different way, algorithms are written by humans. You can make an algorithm do whatever you want it to do and even when unbiased data is entered they are by no means infallible. Algorithmic bias can occur for several or more reasons. Human-derived "codes" or algorithms could be wrong or some of them are wrong. We don't know. We have no way of determining whether they are correctly or incorrectly analyzing the data we feed them. Scientists know the numerous pitfalls of using DNA analysis as a primary means of speciation. Yet, they are eager to publish knowingly justifying a faulty process. The "Why" should be obvious.
Only my second time listening, but I’m a big fan already.
Should we? Yes. Absolutely. Have we? Nope. Will we? Nope. In the absence of responsible keepers, regulation is really the only option I see that would work.
Islands, or Murray Darlings as most people refer to them over here, are the best kept secret in Carpets
Ahh I need to go to Australia
