Options Trading Strategy for Passive Income
#tradingstrategy #optionstrading #passiveincome #howtomakepassiveincome #options
Cash-secured puts are an options trading strategy where an investor sells put options while holding enough cash in their account to buy the underlying stock if the put option is assigned. This strategy is often used to generate income or to acquire a stock at a desired price lower than its current market price.
Key Features of Cash-Secured Puts:
Selling a Put Option:
A put option gives the buyer the right to sell the underlying stock at a specified strike price before or at the expiration date.
When you sell (write) a put, you take on the obligation to buy the stock at the strike price if the buyer exercises the option.
Securing with Cash:
To ensure you can fulfill the obligation if assigned, you must have enough cash in your account to buy the stock at the strike price.
For example, if the strike price is $50 and one contract represent 100 shares, you must have $5,000 ($50 x 100 shares) available.
Premium Income:
As the seller of the put, you collect the option premium upfront. This is your immediate profit regardless of whether the option is exercised or not.
The premium acts as a cushion, reducing your effective purchase price if you end up buying the stock.
Two Possible Outcomes:
The stock price stays above the strike price: The option expires worthless, and you keep the premium as profit.
The stock price falls below the strike price: The option buyer exercises their right, and you buy the stock at the strike price. Your effective cost is the strike price minus the premium received.
Cash-secured puts can be a source of passive income, as they allow you to earn premiums (income) by selling put options, provided you have enough cash to secure the trade. Many investors use this strategy to generate consistent income while waiting to buy stocks at a discounted price.
This passive income comes in the form of premium. The premium is the price that the buyer of an option pays to the seller (also called the writer) for the rights provided by the option contract. It represents the cost of acquiring the option and is determined by various factors, such as the underlying asset’s price, time to expiration, and market volatility.
In the video, I use Amazon $AMZN stock as a potential cash secured put option play. Amazon is one of the world’s largest multinational technology companies, primarily known for its e-commerce platform. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, Amazon started as an online bookstore but has since expanded into a wide range of industries, including cloud computing, entertainment, logistics, and artificial intelligence.
Conditional probability is the probability of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred. It quantifies the relationship between two events and how the occurrence of one affects the likelihood of the other. Check out my Conditional Probability coding video in python here: th-cam.com/video/oy4NlUaUD7M/w-d-xo.html
You can also achieve passive income with some exposure to risk through covered calls. A covered call is an options trading strategy where an investor holds shares of a stock (or ETF) and sells call options on those shares to generate income. It’s a popular strategy for conservative investors who want to earn additional returns on their stock holdings while potentially capping their upside. Well done, very useful video. This is a very interesting video, maybe you could try to read data and detect positions in real time, I think that would also be very useful and interesting to see how it would work
Hey @miloskrsmanovic5630, thank you for your comment and watching the coding video! This is a good idea - it would be interesting to see how RVOL performs on a shorter, near real time timeframe instead of the daily view. I'm happy to explore this.
This is great and very eye opening! Thanks a lot!
Hey @martin17scott, I’m glad you enjoyed the coding video! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Chegg is worth at least $7 a share. Give it 3 years.
Do you think its still worth a shot to invest in chegg?
Hey @ShredsofBlaze, There's value potential in Chegg. Pivotal moments will be their upcoming earnings; Chegg needs to prove stability in revenue and subscriptions. Of course, this is not financial advice, and everyone must assess their own financial journey. Thank you for watching the video and commenting! I hope this video was helpful!

Thanks. Although I installed yahoo_fin but it gives me error , my Python version is 3.11
Hey @epicoptions9809, yahoo_fin may have dependency issues with 3.11. Please try downgrading Python to 3.10 to use yahoo_fin. Or you can try using yfinance library for option data. For yfinance, try: aapl = yf.Ticker("AAPL") opt = aapl.option_chain('2025-01-03') opt.calls I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and your comment.
Damn! Where and how did you learn to use python for financial applications? Could you suggest some resources/books to start pls thanks🙏
Hey @rohankerhalkar3971, thank you for your comment! I was first introduced to code at an internship. I realized it’s importance so I started to learn Python, R, and SQL since then. I enjoy buying stocks and researching the market so I decided to combine this with coding. Code enables trading strategies to not only be tested but also automated. For resources/books, I use TH-cam, ChatGPT, and Stack Overflow regularly for explanations and code help. I would suggest at home projects because I believe I learned a lot when coding a project by naturally running into problems and then finding solutions. I hope this answer helps! Let me know if you have other questions!

Is it because the Spearman correlation is zero, that's why we can use Conditional Probability? if Spearman correlation is not zero, can we still use the Conditional Probability? thanks
Hey @jasonl2860 thank you for your question and watching the video! Short answer is yes: I use the conditional probability when there is some dependence between the two variables. Since the Spearman results show small dependence, I used conditional probability. If events A and B are independent of each other then knowing what happened to B to predict A will be fruitless since the two events don’t impact each other. Since the Spearman p-value is below 0.05 we can say with statistical significance that the two variables (last week return versus this weeks return) are indeed correlated. However this correlation has low impact because the rho value is near zero and slightly negative. This means that there is a small negative impact on this weeks returns based on last weeks returns.
What should I do as an absolute beginner?
Hey @wirelessholepuncher thank you for your comment and watching the video! Personally, I focus on building a moat for my portfolio. Buy long term stocks that I believe will go up in value over time. These stocks like AMZN and GOOGL can be stocks you sell covered calls against to make passive income with some added risk. This is my personal opinion and is not financial advice. As a beginner, what stock strategies are you interested in or exploring? I can potentially cover these topics in a future video! Thank you again and I hope this helps!
@@Intrendias maybe that full beginners topic is a good video in itself? Like, you can explain to us where can we start and how common investing knowledge can be applied to this mathematical and statistical calculation?
I agree! A beginner/where to start video can be helpful. We can also review how to combine investing knowledge with math and statistics to measure the risk of the trades. Thank you for your comment and insight!

Good video. Did you know that the expected moves for any date and probabilities of these events are provided by the trading platform already?
Hey @johnsocs1, thank you for commenting and watching the video! For example, Robinhood does offer metrics per contract like the IV for the annualized expected move and Chance of Profit for the probability of profit. This coding tutorial can help or inspire in-house probability calculations to automate research or options trading. I hope this response helps!
Nice video
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed
“Couldn’t I just ask chatGPT to teach me Spanish”. I’m sure you could, but the fact is that Duolingo has made a platform to make learning languages easier and fun for the average person. That is extremely difficult for AI to replace. Could you ask chatGPT to do a homework assignment for you? Yes. Yes you could. With perhaps the same error rate as chegg. The difference being that chatGPT is free.
Also Chegg reminds you of GameStop. I don’t see Chegg being shorted over 120% of the total shares outstanding (actual # ~10%). That is purely the reason GameStop did what it did. Being threatened by technical innovations is the only similarity GameStop and chegg share
Hey there! Thank you for commenting and watching the video! These are good points! I only mention Chegg and GameStop face a industry shift. The video showcases potential value in Chegg because of the negative market sentiment while the company remains cash flow positive.
Great analysis on CHGG. Finally someone sees and explains the deep value in this company. Yes, they might be the Kodak of ed tech, but I think the market had a knee jerk reaction and ChatGPT. The issue with LLM is that much of the data is incorrect, it's language based and the data is actually shrinking. Chegg is building small or niche LM's, the data is correct and it's improving. SLM's is the future and if Chegg has the resources to continue to build these models, this could be a huge turnaround, you just need to be patient. And I always loved Buffets cigar analogy and how you applied it to Chegg. That analogy is why I purchased it 3 months ago, but an an avg price of 3.50. A bit under water. But I am patient.
Hey @patricks2695 thank you for the comment and watching! Chegg's questions and answers database can be valuable in it of itself. It would be interesting to see Chegg sell this data for other models to use and train, or Chegg promotes their own LM like CheggMate. I'm glad you enjoyed the tie in with Buffett and the cigar analogy - it felt fitting.
Great video Intrendias! I believe you were right on the money when you said if Chegg can keep their subscriber count stable, you will see an insane turnaround on the stock. My question is how are they going to change their business model. Yes, they are introducing AI on their platform now too; but I'd like to see a wider variety of products/services breadth in the company. I believe Chegg needs to diversify in order to stay in business. An example (it's a reach) would be hiring tutors and having subscribers being able to schedule time with a tutor. Or perhaps releasing guide books on certain classes. Whatever they do, they need to do it fast! Thanks again for the great vid!
Hey @nhess2375, thank you for your comment and watching the video! The diversity could come from different education services like you mentioned. Chegg has a language education platform called Busuu www.busuu.com/en-us. Chegg may need to advertise the value of this service better, market it, and pin it against popular apps like Duolingo to take market share. Chegg subscribers also get access to other perks like Max and Adobe that Chegg should better advertise or consider dropping if these benefits are not incentivizing subscribers to stay or convert: www.chegg.com/perks. I agree Chegg needs to pivot quick to not only stabilize but even grow.

Why did you use regression for calculating alpha and beta? Why didnt we use the CAPM formula?
Thank you for watching the video and the comment! “Beta is a measure of the covariance of a stock with the market. It is calculated using regression analysis.” (campusguides.lib.utah.edu/c.php?g=160745&p=1052911#:~:text=Beta%20is%20also%20a%20measure,more%20volatile%20than%20the%20market.) We could calculate the beta with the numpy covariance function instead of direct regression: #Convert to arrays stock = np.array(stock_returns) market = np.array(market_returns) # Calculate covariance and variance covariance = np.cov(stock, market)[0][1] market_variance = np.var(market) # Calculate beta beta = covariance / market_variance print(f"Beta: {beta}")

Great video! I have been chopping Wing financials for the last 3 quarters and no matter how you cut it, this thing is MASSIVELY overvalued. Even if it does multiply it’s store and sales footprint by 3 as the CEO suggests, it would still be overvalued exponentially. The PE and negative ROE along with an average product in a saturated market shows metrics that would be crazy to buy at 425 per share todays price. This thing was up $7 in the first half hour of trading on 410 shares- heavily manipulated and institutionally owned. This valuation is a head scratcher to say the least, much easier to short at these levels than to go long IMO. I am going short against $425 and will DCA if it runs more.
Thank you for your comment and watching the video! Definitely a head scratcher for sure. Market is pricing in hyper growth while consumer sentiment is sluggish. I wish you success in your short trade.
Thank you for the video. How would you turn that into a dashboard so multiple instruments could be monitored in relation to the levels?
Thank you for watching and your comment! If you would like to create a dashboard I recommend python dash. Dash enables you to build analytical web applications without leaving python. In the same dataframe, you can calculate other technical analyses and add data to monitor against the levels. I hope this helps!
Which stocks are you excited for earnings?
Hi. This is very useful. Appreciate. Been keeping all my formulas in excel, but getting too large and slow. Now learning to automate that by building my first Python. Watched and learned as much in this 48 hours. For us, we want to 'scrape' in batches of ticker symbols. possibly need to learn up more syntax in Python to achieve that. Then build our own fundamentals formulas to perform horizontal or vertical analysis. Your videos has everything I needed. But limited to one symbol at a time, I would need to look up other vides to incorporate that "list of symbols" and run them only once periodically.
Hey! Thank you for watching the video and your comment! A for loop could work through a list of tickers one at a time to perform your scrape. For example, tickers = ['AAPL',"GOOGL','AMZN'] for ticker in tickers: #must indent below print(f'Now on {ticker}) #perform task here
