Ein hoch aktuelles altes Lied, das die Kraft und den Segen des Waldes preist. Aus Erk/ Böhmes Deutschem Liederhort unter dem Titel "Waldeinsamkeit". War in Brandenburg, Sachsen und Schlesien verbreitet. Seit 1721 nachweisbar. Zeitgemäß aus der Sicht des Jägers gedichtet. Begleitet auf einer Gitarrenlaute von Michael Wach, 1905.

Diese Ballade wurde in der Zeit zwischen 1300 und 1900 gesungen. Die Textfassung hier wurde von Goethe 1771 im Elsaß aufgezeichnet, die traditionelle Melodie im Jahr 1539. Beide Elemente wurden in der Jugendbewegung zu einer Fassung vereinigt. So alt dieses Lied ist, so aktuell die Botschaft über die Geschlechterrollen.

A lively compositon from the repertoire of the upper class pipers, from John Geoghegan's Tutor for the Pastoral Pipes. It demands coss-fingered notes for the middle part in d minor, making it sound rather classical than traditional. Maybe it was part of an opera or pantomime. Although often attributed to Tourlough O'Carolan, this lovely piece is a traditional song with lyrics of love and desire, composed before his time. There are some different versions to be found in the old collections; I followed the one in Bunting's, on which Líam O'Flynn's version is based. The e-regulator key, acting on the baritone, is of great harmonical benefit.

These reels come from O'Farrell's Pocket Companion published in 1805 / 1806. Reels are very sparsely represented in this work, they seem ton have been a very modern type of dance in Ireland at the time. Played on a chanter possibly made by Michael Egan, to Kearnan drones and Kannmacher regulators, including one with an e, mounted besides the bass. C sharp.

A lyrical song to a graceful air. Imagine a disco party, a young man dancing with his sweetheart and her parents present, judging him. But this 150 years ago, under the village lime-tree... Found in "Deutsches Lautenlied", a collection, published in 1914 with the Wandervogel movement in mind.

Ein einmaliges traditionelles Lied aus Lothringen (Louis Pinck: Verklingende Weisen, Bd. 3 Nr. 87): Ein Dialog zwischen zwei Liebenden darüber, wie sie als Ehepaar zusammen leben wollen. Alles wichtige kommt zur Sprache: Die Liebe, die Finanzen, die Arbeit, die Kinder, die Liebeslust... Ich habe keine andere Variante in den Quellen aus deutschen Landschaften gefunden.

This lively tune has been found in a dance tune collection from Arendsee (nowadays called Kühlungsborn) , set up in around 1870 in Mecklenburg. Here played on a Hardanger fiddle. This instrument gives those plain German tunes a new character with its exciting double stopping technique.

This air I have found in O'Farrell's Pocket Companion. It is best rendered without drones on this antique set of pipes, made by Thomas Scott in about 1810, and the regulator chord setup matches well to the e minor key.

A piece, describing the noise of the hens. There is another version: "The Hen's March through the Midden", once recorded by Dave Swarbrick. This one I found in that famous collection from the first decade of the 19th century, and played on a contemporary set of pipes, made by Thomas Scott.

This waltz tune has been collected from Tammy Sinclair, a mouth organ player in Shetland, by Irina Böhme in 2016, when she visited the islands. She posted it on facebook last year, where I found it. Tammy's father had learnt it in Bremerhaven in 1927 and eventually brough it to Shetland, where it became part of the traditional repertoire. I have arranged it by its form from the rough recording.
