This animation shows how blocks of ice get trapped in the sediments of a retreating glacier. The ice lasts among the sediments for a relatively long time. But, once the ice melts, it leaves a depression among the sediments. The depression is know as a kettle hole. If the kettle hole fills with water, it becomes known as a kettle lake.

Conduction is energy transfer in solids. Since the molecules in solids are so closely spaced, molecular contact is far more likely than in fluids. When the wooden rectangles (representing atoms) are closely spaced, the motion of one atom can affect another. But when the rectangles are placed farther apart (representing atoms in fluids), the energy is not readily transferred.

This is a time lapse of the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, as seen from Casper, Wyoming. Like all solar eclipses, the Sun's light was blocked by the Moon in its new moon phase. The time span of the photos took nearly two hours in real time. However, the totality (time that the Sun is completely obscured) was only about two minutes and 26 seconds. V shaped contour lines point upstream when they cross a river. Downward erosion decreases the elevation of the land, and that loss in elevation is reflected in the contour lines. Watch as we use a model to answer the question posed in the title.

We used a tank of water to model the movement of fronts across the Earth's surface. The blue water is cold, and the red water is warm. Watch what happened when we combined the two fluids. The colder (more dense) water moved quickly below the colder water, and a distinct horizontal interface between the two layers became visible.

Convection is the transfer of energy in fluids through density differences. In this video clip, you will see air sink over a cold source (ice cube), and rise over a warm source (candle). The less dense (warmer) air rises, and the more dense (colder) air sinks.

The movements of the Sun are cyclic and predictable. In this time lapse video, you will see the Sun rise beneath the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge, in Babylon, NY. Since we are in the month of October, the Sun will rise each day just south of where it rose the day before.
