Crashing at Iceman Cometh | Raw Race Footage | Inside the Pro Women's Race
This is the start and finish raw footage from Iceman Cometh, the largest bike race in North America with over 5,000 participants and over 10,000 people at the finish of the pro race. The footage includes the lead-in to my crash at the top of Woodchip hill as well as my party pace into the finish where I take a fireball hand-up and try to make the most out of an unfortunate day. I provide voice-over commentary on what is happening and my race perspective. As always, please subscribe to my channel if you want to keep the recaps coming and let me know how you like this format!

Is Big Sugar the Hardest Race in the Life Time Grand Prix? Big Sugar 2024 Race Report Paige Onweller
มุมมอง 9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Big Sugar is the last stop in the Life Time Grand Prix series and with points being tight, I knew this race would be very dynamic and tactical. I was in contention for the win most of the day, but ultimately crossed the line in 4th, which was good for 3rd place overall in the Grand Prix. I hope sharing this video gives you an inside look into the female peloton and a breakdown of the race. As g...
All New Trek Checkmate | How a Pro Adapts to a New Race Bike | Mini-Doc Paige Onweller
มุมมอง 45K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, Paige walks you through her process of testing and feeling out a new unreleased bike, the Trek Checkmate! This is Trek’s fastest and lightest gravel bike that they’ve made to date (~1.5lbs lighter than the previous Checkpoint SLR). The bike has new geometry that allows the rider to get lower, so in addition to the bike being more aerodynamic it also assists the rider in being mor...

After learning she tore the peroneal retinaculum and tendon, she flew to Florida to work with a progressive surgeon and begin the journey back to racing fitness. This story highlights the struggles an injury brings to a professional athlete’s season and we share the raw emotion that’s inv...
How to Survive Unbound Gravel | 2024 Race Recon - North Course | Paige Onweller | Mini-Doc
มุมมอง 71K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Unbound 2024 goes North this year! The North course is more rugged with significantly more chunk lending to increased flat risks this year. We hope this video helps you in your preparation for Unbound! We also hope it doesn’t take you 30 minutes to repair your flat, but if it does, at least the cows will keep you company ;) If you like this video, please subscribe to my channel as we start from...
5:55 what's the hub on these wheels?
The Checkmate sells for $8.3K. Who has that much money to spend on a bike?
Team Paige
I like my checkmate
Excellent race commentary. You really add a lot of "inside understanding". Thanks for doing the video!
Great video! After several years of not getting in the 200, I got the Congratulations email! The best advice here is the gut training day(s)!
Well Done! Enjoy your race recaps …. Thanks!
Great video Paige, thanks for sharing this insight
Flat boring race in michigan. Grow up and move away. Much bigger mountains everywhere else
Just found the page! Love the videos!
I've been to that race for the past 20 years and have never seen the start or any racing out on the course. This really re-energizes me for next year's race. And the guy at the end of the clip, Papa Frick, works his ass off all day. They all do. Fun side note: one of the guys who set up all that fencing is a famous American cyclist who raced at the top of the game for years. And now he lives in northern Michigan living the dream. It takes a village. Great post. See you next year.
Really appreciate this footage and commentary!
Your competitors were watching the guy at the start (on the right side) who counted down using fingers and was one second ahead of the announcer :(
Loved this recap!
I usually get up for this one - fav of the year for sure - but this year was different! Couldn't get the stoke level up until a ways in. Nice effort on flat tires! Enjoy the off-season!
Perfect 💯
Love the format of this video! Seems like it would also be a great way for you to look back and review your race for yourself. Heal up quick!
great video ! I haven't done the Iceman since 2017, but I ride the Vasa ski trail a lot. I had no idea that I was riding up a 30% grade, lol. I knew it was steep and sandy, didn't know it was that steep ! You displayed a great attitude after being forced down, well done on your part !
Great video! How many days do pros tend to rest off bike before a race?
great recap, so cool to see elites explain what actually goes down in a race. the surprise mechanical pre race is something most racers have experienced thanks for talking about it.
Thanks for the race footage, hope you heal fast.
Seems like a drop bar hardtail or 650b gravel bike would have been ideal setup for this route. Cool footage, nevertheless.
The race organizers have added more single track in the last 3 years to steer riders away from drop bar gravel bikes. Goal is to keep this event an MTB race. This is home court for me and I do ride a 650b drop bar in much of it yet find a hardtail more fitting the route.
I missed it this year, because I work for elections. I did it last year after having been run over by a car on January 31st. Not back on the bike until September 15th (screws in my pelvis, 6 plates in my ribs and one in my shoulder).
Good job but boy does this remind me of why I hate CC MTB racing and why I stopped.
Excellent job, overall!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🇺🇸
despite all odds you were doing awesome, up on til the crash---bummer!! nice vid. time to rest
Thanks for sharing! I also crashed, 15 seconds from the end . Broke my Femur, somehow I got back on the bike and finished. Heal up quickly!
@@mikesheetz9134 am I reading this right?! You broke your femur and still finished? That’s insane!!
@@PaigePowered A friend and I were trying to guess how many people get injuries at Iceman that require medical attention. I injured my shoulder three weeks prior and was a spectator this year, which, I have to say, might be more fun than racing (I'm far from a pro). I hope you and @mikesheetz9134 have minor fractures and not broken bones requiring surgery. Also, very cool video!
Yeah I finished! The worse part is my wife didn’t think I was hurt and made me walk to the car.lol ! Had surgery in Traverse City… Can’t wait til next year! Good luck with the LTGP and have an exceptional 2025!
Heal up paige ! Sorry about the crash! Nice to see ya out there
Does Iceman Fireball hit the same as GLR Fireball? Asking for a friend…
Yes Scot…. IYKYK😂
Nice race, Paige! Bummer on the crash, heal up. Come back next year so we can keep cheering you on! Thanks for a great video.
Hope you heal up soon!
I really like the recap format here. Thanks for doing this! I loved the Iceman recap video, too (especially because I was there 😊).
So proud of you ❤❤❤
Liked your coverage of the race, I used to do it every year before I moved to NC eighteen year's ago. It was always my favorite event because of all the folks who flooded into the area. Great party. My group used to go up, We had Brian Matter with us for the first few year's, I think he was 14 the first year we went. I thought it was hard to believe that he's 46 now. How time flies.
Well done Paige 💪
Awesome season. Heal up well
thanks for the awesome video and walkthrough, come back stronger than ever!
Awesome recap, bummer about the wrist but, it is what it is...
Loved the data on the screen as the race progresses
Wow, great re cap and hearing your power numbers for the race certainly puts into perspective how strong you and your fellow female competitors are. 😳 Super impressive.
Fantastic!
2:52 is why I'm here serious question though: how much of a difference do you notice in traction and handling when shaving your tire knobs off? I'll be giving 2.2's a try for my last local gravel race of the year soon
So after more testing, I do not think that trimming knobs makes much of a difference. I believe rolling resistance is more determined by the casing of a tire rather than the tread itself. I did not actually run trimmed knobs for Big Sugar, but I did for gravel nationals and The Rad. On the rear tire, I do not feel it impacted handling (sometimes would slide but the front wheel is really what keeps you up) but on the front it did change handling when I rode them trimmed (essentially making it more of a slick). So in summary, I do not think it's worth trimming.
@ thank you for the in-depth response, and for the extensive testing! Can’t wait to see what the hype is all about
Greetings from Australia ! I really enjoyed this video and also the Unbound Recon video. I generally find recap videos a bit generic but this onr keep me interested from beginning to end due to your format and delivery. Thank you !
Totally enjoyed your recap, thank you for sharing!
Great recap video, thanks 👍
Such an awesome comeback from your injury this year! Congrats on a outstanding season.
THANK YOU!!! First, thank you for the season. Knowing about your injury and watching you come back from it has been inspiring! Second, thank you for the recap. You can always find one from the guys but to see a race from a top-level woman's perspective is fantastic! Enjoy your off season!
As the local, allowing your competitors to miss the turn instead of showing them the way is just plain smart. 🤷♂️ homefield advantage, gotta use it where you can. 👍🏼
Fantastic recap - your perspective and narrative are super interesting. How you handled that suprise turn seems absolutely fairplay - you did your homework !! Also appreciate your neutrally presented (but super interesting) observations on what other riders were doing or not doing. That stuff is usually left out but is a huge part of the actual story. Anyway, super classy.
CONGRATS !!! Yes, more recaps please. Great bonce back from Surgery👍 BTW - How did You find / connect with Dr. Lewis @ Foot & Ankle in FL?
Great content, Very cool!
