Once Before I Go - November, 2024
The smell of a traditional Filipino breakfast, and the sound of a smooth male voice crooning throughout the house as I wake up in the morning was not an uncommon occurrence in my childhood home.
Grandpa loved excellent singers like Englebert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Matt Monroe, and many of the other great crooners from the golden era of great music and great singing.
One of grandpa's favorites is Johnny Mathis. His sweet tone and that signature vibrato often decorated the passing of time in our house. Johnny Mathis' flavor of "clean soul" is an art form that I've spent my whole life trying to master.
With this song, I pay my humble tribute to the maestro, Johnny Mathis.
This is "Once Before I Go", originally recorded by Peter Allen in 1983, and later recorded by Johnny Mathis in 2017. I hope you enjoy my take on this beautiful ballad.
This is for you grandpa…

Once Before I Go - Peter Allen (1983), Johnny Mathis (2017)
Once before I go, I want you to know
That I would do it all again
I'm sure we'd make the same mistakes
But we would make it through
The pains and joys and aches we knew back then
I would do it all, I'd do it all again
Before I go, I want you to know
That I look back with no regrets
And when our luck was wearing thin
And we were down and out
We still came back to win against all bets
Now when I look back, I still have no regrets
And it's so hard to say goodbye
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So, hang onto the memories
And hold me close once more
Once more
Just once before I go, I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart, and I'll be strong
I love you just the way I've loved you all along
And it's so hard to say goodbyes
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So kiss me for the last time
And hold me close once more
Once more
Just once before I go, I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
Even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're in my heart
And I'll be strong
You are the light that shines on me
You always were, and you'll always be

Perfect Pitch Ear Training - Lesson 1 / Theory & First Exercise

Perfect Pitch Ear Training - Lesson 1 / Theory & First Exercise
I already started this king of training and started to feel the colors of the notes, but I just forget, and when I hear it at the start of the training I just don't know and then I get it right again. Did you have this same problem at the beginning? Do you have to keep practicing to keep remembering?
Please keep the exercises
Does your perfect pitch allow you to recognize every single note in a song and how fast can that get? By the way i wanna ask that by which Masterclass of lucas burge will we have built color discrimination?
@@i-is-alive - Color hearing gives me an advantage in DJ’ing… Most DJ’s rely on the computer to tell them when two songs are harmonically compatible to blend/mix… I can listen to it and know. So it doesn’t take me as long to mix in key. The second phase of David Lucas Burge’s Perfect Pitch Supercourse is where the practitioner begins to solidify their color hearing.
@@jetdeleon I mean like by which Masterclass do the second phase starts?
@@i-is-alive - Phase 2 starts around Masterclass 14 - where he uses the analogy of "the ice melting" to explain what happens when the ear starts to make the phase shift into color-hearing. But don't skip ahead… your inner ear needs to undergo the preliminary exercises so that in can be conditioned for phase 2…. there is no shortcut.
@@jetdeleon Thanks, I'm close❤️
❤❤❤❤❤
Haha your vibe is so wholesome but Id probably starve before getting all of them right ;)
Haha… thank you friend! If the rules stated that I couldn't eat until I get them all right, I would have starved too! lol
could sine waves work too?
I suppose you could experiment with sine waves if that's something you're interested in. For the most part, if you're a musician who plays standard musical instruments, it's advisable to do the exercises with the instrument that you primarily play.
Can you do other lessons??
Hi!! Your lessons are incredible! That unlocks so much! Thank you so much! I really dream about it but i never had it
Can you please tell me whether training colour hearing in few of the middle octaves is fine like 2nd to 5th because even though I learn a drill in the few octaves quick but it takes far more of a time to master it in the higher or lower octaves and I think that would just be a waste of time? Please answer❤
Although we recommend practicing around the middle registers of the keyboard, it's only because that register is universally the most familiar and comfortable to the human ear. But the pitch colors themselves don't actually change when you move to a different octave. The "C" sounds like a "C" whether it's C2 or C4. It just has a different "tint" that makes it seem "lower" or "higher"… other than that, it is still the same exact color.
Hi Jet -- what age were you when you trained yourself?
Hey there… I was about 23 when I first started training… but I fluctuated off and on for many years because I was impatient and tried to rush the process… and as a consequence, I wasn't getting the results. So I share this in hopes that you and others can avoid the mistake I made. It doesn't have to take as long as it took me if you are patient, relaxed, and consistent
hi jet when will you continue the ear training series?
hey there! I've been swamped with work but I'm hoping to pick up where we left off in the next few weeks. Honestly didn't expect such a positive reaction to my ear-training videos.. so I will try to prioritize its continuation in order to help you and many others who have requested more videos.
Love this thank you Jet! Question. How do I do the first exercise if my instrument is the saxophone? I can only play one note at a time
Hi BigDaddyMIZU - Many of the color-hearing drills can be done with your saxophone alone. However, to do any type of "unlocking" exercise, you do need something that plays chords so that your ears can get accustomed to distinguishing between individual tones when played at the same time (aka harmonically). You can even use a cheap toy keyboard like the one I'm using in this video… as long as it's in tune, it will work.
Amazing teaching style, subbed!
You surely have used David Lucas burge perfect pitch course, I wanna know how much time it took for you to build basic color discrimination or to complete the course and how much time it took you to reach the universal color discrimination and aural recall level, please tell me… I really wanna know.
@@i-is-alive - It’s a huge course. And Being a very impatient college student, the size of the course overwhelmed me… I skipped around, practiced sporadically at best, and didn’t follow David’s instructions exactly. Consequently, I didn’t get the results and of course became discouraged. Over the next few years I would revisit the lessons but never fully committing to David’s instructions because I was so impatient. Once I finally committed to following David’s lessons every single day (and learned to relax and not frustrated), the color discrimination started to become clear… (about 6 months or so).. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that the aural recall became clear, but I would say that somewhere between 6-9 months of daily consistent listening and practice is about where the recall became increasingly accurate… definitely worth it because it improved my singing, my ability to learn music quickly, and even improvise. Please let me know if this was helpful
@@jetdeleon Thanks alot, you've been the person I've been searching for. I'll practice daily and calmly❤️.. i might've some questions along the process to ask.. looking forward to your help.. You're great
@@jetdeleon Is it ok to assign any name to the tones, like i use solfege to name the tones and i also use solfege to name the relations of notes in relative pitch training, is that ok or will it overlap?
@@i-is-alive - It hasn't been a part of my own practice, but I don't think it would do any harm as long as your are listening into every tone as instructed in the drills.
@@i-is-alive - It hasn't been a part of my own practice, and though it isn't necessary, I don't think it would do any harm. But please remember that training for color hearing is not an intellectual exercise. It's all about spending time to become intimately familiar with the finer qualities of each note. Assigning names to them will not do that for you… only Listening does.
I'm not a musicion but I was sitting one day harmonising with the traffic sounds, and I thought oh maybe this is it. So I went to my music teacher sister and said, I think I have perfect pitch. I got harshly shut down of course, but it wasn't of course to me at the time, I just thought it was something you had or didnt. Out of that discussion came a question from me that went unanswered, how can you have perfect pitch if you don't know the names of the notes or chords etc. For example she would play a note and say what's a 5th above that, and I'm like what's a 5th? Also, I could never sing, family is all musical, singers mainly, and I'm like the non-musical one. Everyone says you can't learn it, but then there are all these ppl on youtube learning it, so what if it wasn't that simple, what if the underlying ability is inate (have it or not), but even if you have it, you then have to go and learn the names of the colours so to speak. Colours make more sense to me because I'm a painter, and they really feel similar, mix in a bit of this and a bit of that untill you find what you like. One of my favourite colours is burnt umber, but do you think I knew the word for burnt umber when I was a kid, nope, but I loved that colour. If I hear a mixture of sounds that I don't like, I know about it immediately lol.
Stones at the bottom of the lake I love that!
How it works? Am i have to hear a single note and then give them a color
Exactly like you said hehe
Here is what I got for pitch colors: C -pale yellow C#\Db -dark blue D - reddish brown D#\Cb- yellow E- white F- green G- cream white G#Ab- Brown green A- blue A#\Bb- midnight blue B- orange
Good job Kevin!
I’m in Portland would be cool to learn from your personal on ear training vocals
Thank u so much that was useful 🤍🤍🤍
A yo! 🎉🎉🎉
I think the numbers that she said did not match all the time with the exact intercals.
Hmmm…. you could be right… keep in mind these numbers are not isolated intervals. They are the degrees in the major scale from 1 to 7 (with sharps/flats in between).
I have ever taught that in tonal music home tone is the chord I(tonic) but you said that in this music 3 is the home, how is this can tell please?
Good question! Yes… there is a "home tone" for each chord. But there is also a "home tone" for the entire song (aka the Key of the song). In the video example I start by singing the root note of each chord (2, 7D, 3, etc.) - Each of these numbers are a degree within the major scale… and they are also the root of each chord in the progression. I hope that makes sense. Highly recommend checking out "Improvise for Real" by David Reed for a more in depth study and explanation.
This drill and explanation is so helpful, I would like to see more of this sort using every kind of chord.
You are a musician in blood
That's encouraging for me as Solf V student who needs to dictate chords heard in a melody, though I have music skills and knowledge and background that needs developing color hearing, your constructive advice is welcoming.
I don't have perfect pitch, but i instantly recognized the note Ab at 6:21 lol
You explain the theory really well. I like your style. I just wonder, do you somewhere credit David L. Burge for the theory you present in your videos?
Thank you! To the best of my memory, I do believe I credit David Lucas Burge somewhere in one of my videos. And I’ll probably mention him again if I make any more.
@@jetdeleon Great! I hope you make some videos on the subject again.
Hi Jet, can I pick Cm (on piano) as the home based / security blanket? The reason is this tune is the most familiar to my ears..
Yes that is ok. Remember the most important thing is to listen deeply to each individual tone in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
Love these. Thanks for posting
and what to do if I cannot sing clearly?
I stumbled to your channel and loved the way you explaining and encouraging to learn the perfect pitch. I believe I can recognise the notes without thinking but only for a few notes. So your contents are suit for me to try developing my dream to recognise the colour of notes. Hope it would work...
fantastic I want to replay it
Very educative
Very geune instuction, I came up with an idea, what if we associate a sing note pitch to a unique timbre a music instrument, would not that reinforce our perception of absolute pitch?
Yes.. In the beginning, it is very helpful to stick to one practice instrument (or timbre). Just remember to listen for the pitch color. So if your primary instrument is the piano, you ear will already feel comfortable with the timbre of the piano so that it can stay relaxed while you practice the color-hearing techniques.
Thank you for the lessons,i really like your attitude! that last one looks like it touch the relative ear training border. or am i wrong? it's just to give a clue?
Great question! Yes - in this drill we are comparing the pitches to the A major chord… so it is relative. Remember, we're not trying to block relative pitch. If you find that you need to use relative pitch to recognize the pitch, that is completely alright. Eventually you will begin to recognize the pitch colors with or without a relating note. The key takeaway is that we also listen for the pitch color. Even as you hear the relationship, you will begin to hear the individual pitch color/flavor as well. Hope this helps!
I think It's possible to be born with it. But I agree that young kids get perfect pitch from early training, especially when it's classical. However, I have developed it to some degree after playing piano, steel drum, and kalimba. I can sing from memory c,g, a,f,e,d,c and can call it correctly 8-10 times when played, but still working on learning b and getting them right more consistently.
looking forward to the next one!
Thank you so much for this.
Finally not some stuck up jerk talking about perfect pitch
DEARJET THANKS am i to old to develop this skill?
Great question Rod! - You know how when you meet a new person and you start spending time with them, you start to recognize their voice? You don't even have "try". Yet the more time you spend with your new friend, the more you start to distinguish their voice from everyone else you know. If you can do that at your current age, then I do believe you can learn to recognize the 12 tones and distinguish them from one another.
ha, nice,..fun..good job..so many misconceptions about this stuff...keep up the good work!..
Glad to find someone on the same wavelenf as me 🥲. I also have always believed it is very able to be learned because the mind is very powerful. Words too ✌🏿
Can’t wait until the next lesson. Preciate you for the free value🙏
Thank you, Jet, i like your approach! i like the idea that the sounds (notes) have feelings and characteristics.. I did the exercise. For me: G is green, C is orange, E is purple, F# is yellow, C# is a yellowish orange, D is light blue, E is red, F is grey, B is blue, E-flat is darker purple, B-flat is darker blue, A-flat is pink. As you stated, these color associations aren't fixed but it's a start in changing how i think about pitch.
I recommend practicing on the right side too. I've been DJing since 1988 and in the mid 90's I stopped scratching. Now it's 2024 and I'm working on my scratching technique again but I'm doing both sides. It's challenging.. keep it up and keep the DJ alive..
Jet, Thanks so much for making these videos. Not sure how I came across you page but I'm glad I did. You have a natural knack for teaching and a fresh approach to this topic. Please keep them coming. 🎸
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the content!
I don’t know if you still respond to comments, but how do you know if you’re hearing the right thing? I’ve been trying to get that feeling, but I feel like it’s not working
As long as your practice instrument is properly tuned, you are hearing the right thing. The following is more than worth repeating because it is so crucial for development: *** Relax and let the sounds come to you… The moment you try to “get it” it will elude you… Think of a cat… what will a cat do if you chase it? It will run away… It’s the same exact thing with our color hearing technique practice… the best thing to do is take it easy… We never try to force the ear… the correct approach is always Easy Listening… The more we listen and appreciate the sounds in a relaxed manner, the more our ear will naturally begin to absorb the fine qualities of each tone… So approach every practice session with a childlike curiosity and really spend time with each note… enjoying and appreciating them in an easygoing manner… like getting to know a new friend… we never force it. I hope this helps… keep me posted on how it goes… I’d love to know how you’re doing later down the road.
@@jetdeleon I really appreciate it 🙏
It’s going well, I find it a lot easier on full size jog wheels, I learned to scratch on vinyl so the small jog wheels are hard for me, keep up the good work 😊
