Laowa Nanomorph Full Frames into the Narrative Mix
Taking the new Laowa Full Frame Nanomorphs out into a few of my narrative projects.
My goal wasn't to test the lenses solo, I wanted to know how it would do in the hustle and bustle of a moving set. Being a tool included in the mold as oppose to a project built around the tool.
Thank you to:
- Laowa Cine Lenses for the sending me a set to test
- Sony Professional Canada for lending me a Sony Venice for a the shoot test
- Keslow Camera Toronto for providing support for the Sony Venice
- The producers of the film "Unseen" for allowing me to film and test the lenses
- The producers of the film "Goodbye, with a side of Lichen" for allowing me to film and test the lenses

Awesome video and insight. Got yourself a new fan.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video
should have uploaded in 4k homie
@@cws_dp yea I thought about it. But found most people watching these videos on their phones in 1080. So haven’t really pushed for 4K exports lately for the Tube.
Nice seeing the Venice out working with those lenses!
@@Daniel_Sanchez_ yea it was fun to compare the FX9 and the Venice and seeing a proper 3:2 de squeeze in camera with the Venice. The FX9 really is missing out on that proper 3:2, which is also what the Burano currently is missing
love a good lens dive
Glad you enjoyed the little video

Is mavo edge here?
There’s a couple of shots in the reel shot on a Mavo Edge 8K
@@rayt_visual what part
@00:21@@Journeywiththehintis
@@Journeywiththehintis Other projects I did with the Mavo Edge 8K weren't approved before I made this reel. So didn't add them. Other cameras in the footage mix, Sony Fx9, Arri Alexa XT, Arria Alexa Mini, Red Komodo, Canon C300. Really with any footage, it also comes down to how it was lit and how the colourists treat the footage. All of these projects were done by some colourists not by me from production.
Yesssss !! brilliant work Raymond !👍👍👍
Thank you
Always a problem with their cameras. I couldn’t trust anything above the S35 variant
Oh which problem? The image was nice, so our team did overlook the challenges. But also why we tend to rent.
you have your audio only on the left channel.that's a sennheiser, right?
Oh thanks ... I didn't realize. And yes, it is a Sennheiser MKE600
No footage?
Yea both projects were passed off to a post team. So I didn’t have that nor permission for those just yet, hence why the single shot of the directors monitor. I’ll look at making a follow up video with finished, graded footage.
the general person can not know the quality lens for the content on the social media. This lens for the content , its not for profressional work.
Beautiful creative video❤
Where can we get that blocks and tools?
Exactly what I was looking for! I am looking at renting the FX9 for a shoot. Maybe a dumb question, but is Cine El the “Venice” profile or is this S-Log 3?
S-Log 3 is in CineEI. If you are in SDR/HDR mode you leave the picture profile off and you get the "Venice" look. Thats only good for quick turnarounds or no time for colour grading. If you want to colour grade, I recommend CineEI and Slog3 with a preview Venice LUT (free from Sony's Website). Especially if you are doing anything narrative.
Why this over dzo?
Unnfortunatelly the Meike does not have a matching zoom for their primes and that is keeping many to get them ....
Well, Rokinon/Xeen also don't have a zoom and they do fine. I actually think it's because they came into the market with many many others at the same time and their product isn't readily available as lenses such as the DZOs or IRIS who have their product in more locations for others to access/buy. Plus they took a long time to get their full set out, where DZO out the gate offered the whole spectrum.
@@rayt_visual Glad is ok for you. I only invest in versatile gear...Meike is not one of it...DZO on the other hand has zooms but i dont like it. Meike primes are good, too bad they dont do a zoom pair...

Awesome video! Which PL to e adapter did you use?
Yea I own the Wooden Camera PL-E adapter. And I really like it. I find that one and the Metabones ones are the best 2 PL adapters for the EMount.
So this works with the older pavotube 30 and 15cs?
Yea this was before they updated the app and before the new tubes (the X tubes) came out. I still have this set up and I do still use it. And they work well.
...
Great info Ray! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks bud. Glad you learned something from it. :)
Great video. I shoot with both lenses and I super agree with your analysis, spot on
Thanks. Yea I look forward to doing another test with a different set of lenses.
if you had a first or second AC stand your PL case right side up like that, they should be tarred and feathered. lol
Thanks for the post. I know these things always take a lot of time and effort. I think a lot of people are interested in these lenses or the vespids and whilst most have touched on the build quality and specs, I have yet to see anything that makes me think that these add anything in terms of look more than an art series sigma. I have tried both and find the look largely underwhelming. I think they work mechanically very well but I’m not sure what else either add. A lot of the pieces are high key and although I understand that this is not a review I have to say that I was struggling with the footage and lighting to see what the lens was or wasn’t doing. A comparison with almost any other lens would help. I’m not sure how you were pulling focus but it cannot have been easy. Again with such high key work it’s hard to see the added quality that would justify these over something with a bit more character or renting something faster or nicer. Thanks so much for the post and good luck with future posts.
Great job ! Also a Toronto native ! Had these for my c200 and I’m looking at getting the rest of the set for my fx6 😊
Nice. Well Hello fellow GTA Filmmaker. Yea they have been great on my more budget end of gigs.
Thank`s for the pro real world examples. For indies a pro option, for sure. All the lenses side by side with same content would be nice, too (breathing, flaring, distortion, bokeh, contrast, colour matching). I´ve seen in other tests, that the 85 mm seems to be bit yellowish.
Yea I have also seen that ... I need to do another test with these next to a Zeiss CP3 or Supremes. Maybe in this next year I will connect with some DPs who have those lenses to compare or when I rent them for bigger jobs. For me, I haven't really noticed that huge of a colour shift between the lenses, almost none-existent ... but I will also sit down with a proper DIT and get that hopefully sometime this year. :)
HI Ray.. Thanks for great video. So, all footage is taken with sony fx9? What about Meike after few months of using... any technical or harware issue issue ? What about customer support? We are very interested on these lenses.. thanks and keep rocking!
Hi there. Glad you enjoyed the review. Yes all of the footage in my example here is on the Sony FX9. No hardware issues so far. And I have taken them across several projects with many different people handling them (talking about my 1st and 2nd ACs). Their customer support is pretty descent. Being in North America (Canada) and the company across the globe, it does take a second to get an answer, but do get back to you fairly quickly. Shipping anything from them does take a long time ... but alas, Pandemic shipping woes ontop of distance. Unless you get it from a near by supplier. Good luck with your decision. Alot of great budget options out there now.
Excellent video. Enormously informative - BIG thanks!
Thank you for the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video and got something out of it.
Thanks for the real world examples. There's something about the bokeh I don't care for. I can't put my finger on it. I do love that they stay sharp (but not too sharp) throughout the focal range. I'm coming from the Rokinons, which get soft at the extremes. Almost unusable in many cases. These would be an upgrade for sure. I also love the somewhat vintage look.
Glad you enjoyed some of the examples. Yea sometimes the bokeh can throw me off a bit, but not too much. And yes I do love how fairly sharp they stick wide open. And for sure much better than the Rokinons. They aren't as sharp as the Sigma Cines or Zeiss CP3s, but I didn't want that for narrative work. For commercial sure, but not narrative. Thank you for your thoughts.
Does this wireless function work when the tubes are running off of their batteries? Or do they have to be plugged into something? Great video!
Hey there Jeremiah. The wireless function works with them both plugged in or on their battery power. And thanks. :)
@@rayt_visual Amazing amazing! Thanks a lot!
Good job on them
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the frames I shared. :)
I have a BmPCc6k I wish my images would look this beautiful

Wow! This is so cool! One of my favourite recreation n challenge. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks again Bud. :) It was definitely challenging with only a few of us setting up lighting and wearing a few hats ... and having too much fun. ;)
So fun !!!
Oh dear, thanks for the video. Look like the apps cannot direct connect to lights via apps without the router. Been testing it yesterday and I thought my lights got problem 😑 now I know the reason why and also why no many video about it. I ordered the nanlink remote instead after the the video.
Correct on the need of the router. The Astera products are the same way with their own external product to control their gear. So eh, it wasn’t a bother to me. :) but good for you getting at least the controller. Wireless control goes a long way. :)
Hi. Thanx for the vid. I've noticed color shifts from lens to lens. Especially with the 85mm. Is it that bad or it's just a different wb?
Yea I noticed that as well. When I haven't seen that shift that often, but it does happen. I think in my rack focus test, I feel the cloudy sky in the 35-50 shots may have changed when I got to the 85 switch up. I used them on another project, and it wasn't noticeable.
@@rayt_visual thx for a reply! It's hard to pick a cinema set. So many new brands. I think also about Irix, but they have such weird focal lengths0o 11-15-45-150...
@@xxl0o True. But for the price point, these are quite nice along with the DZO group.
