Melonseed Skiff by Crawford Boat Building

www.melonseed.com The Melonseed Skiff is an extraordinarily beautiful reproduction of a nineteenth century American workboat, that has reemerged a century later as one of the premier boats in the daysailor category.

    I just bought one built in 1978. Always admired the inboard trunk mount, so glad I came across one in great shape. Looks like there were some refinements that came after my build. I brought it to vinalhaven and can't wait to get it wet. Looks like it never had a sail rig. Would love to put one together for it. Looking forward to getting out and jigging some pollock!

    Where was Crawford boat building located? Wondering if he's a relative.

    A wonderful short film that I very much enjoy watching. In 1987, Vivian and I were married ... now all these years later we find ourselves sailing a Melonseed Skiff built by the same master craftsman, Roger Crawford. Thanks for the memories. One day, I may have to try my hand at a documentary style Melonseed video. Hold Fast !

      Man the Crawford Mellon seeds are about the prettiest fiberglass boat ever, with the possible exception of some of the Areys pond cats... love to see a video of your craft sailing. I'm just starting a build of a Chamberlain Alpha Dory, 21' racing swampscott type from the 1890s, documenting it on Utube.

      @@danoyes1 “If she’s eye sweet, she’ll sail sweet” comes to mind when I think of my Crawford Melonseed. You can see some videos of my boat under sail on my boat’s TH-cam channel ... th-cam.com/channels/Yb-28LM2N95kE2_xny1SMw.html Good luck with the Dory build.

    Anyone know how to setup the rigging on a sail like this? I recently inherited a boat almost identical to this one in the video, but having trouble setting up the spirit rig.

      What do you want to know about specifically? Prolly the biggest trick is getting snotter tension, and sheet leads just right... otherwise there pretty simple.

      @@danoyes1 Do you think a balanced lug rig would make the boat sail better?

    • @danoyes1
      @danoyes1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nixsonbronson4595 depends on conditions and points of sail, these Swampscott type dories development was hand in glove with the leg-o-mutton style dory sail and hence this rig is the acme of perfection in these open beach boats.. The sprit sail was also quite common locally during 18th and19th centuries. I'm unaware of any New England working boats who's hull evolved in tandem with a Lug rig, but some folks have been able to make them work acceptably. This effort has largely been underway since the 1990s early 2000s in replicas and character boats and never employed by Yankee working waterman during the days of sail.

    Lost my glasses so I may not be seeing correctly BUT it looks to me like you are Flag Poling that sail. In storms I've let my sail go out ahead of the bow like a flag and kept the boat upright. It hard to stop and reef a small boat when high winds kick up.

    Nice over-the-bow launch into an interesting river setting. How did the plans get into your hands? I'd like to go wood. I bet this boat would be excellent with 2 rowers & camping gear. Very enjoyable video.
