In 1961, my father took me "behind the falls". It was possible in those long ago days to walk all the way to the end of the tunnels, to the portals, and see the huge curve of the horseshoe. From the first portal, you saw the end of the wall of water and the river and bridge beyond. From the second portal, you saw only the great sweep of water curving away in both directions. The noise was overwhelming. You could look up to the brink, and down to boxcar sized boulders being pummeled by tons of rushing water. I suspect erosion forced a shutdown of the total "journey", and that makes me sad, because being at the edge of that cauldron of cold crashing foaming water was an unforgettable experience. Thanks for bringing the memory back.🙂
