This is cool but I feel like you people are forgetting about idk the water table. Also I wonder how bad a flood would be if you have several million people underground and a wave washes over the entries of the earth scraper. Also I'm not even sure what problem this would solve. So you take up the same area but instead of going up you go down? This reminds me of the city youtubers that show off concept art of skyscrapers covered in foliage and trees. Then explaining the reason they can't have it is bc "capitalism". Not understanding that the foliage would just rip apart their buildings

Very cool and promising. I think the sweet spot, though, is a blend of both. Skyscrapers, with a very, very deep basement. Live above, put the pumps and other machines below. Also... - We already anchor our skyscrapers with pylons that go down to bedrock, this is just making use of that space. - Grow hydroponics in the underground area, helping to filter the building's air and provide fresh food. Not likely enough to sustain, but it'll help. - Circulate the air. In summer, bringing up the cool air from below will keep the higher levels cool. Likewise in winter, the deep air is slower to cool, and can thus warm the higher layers.

Maybe we should start from simpler, shallow structures? Small underground houses in hot places for savings on AC... Made from prefabricated concrete for cut price. Not underground sci-fi city costs billions.

The whole world is run by a dictatorship of families that gradually controlled the earth that uses religion and that’s why there is no diversity and everything is basically the same and why A sexual rights is put lower than transsexual rights because people would become completely separated from their influence. Same is true for underground cities. The environment would be a much better place and same would be true for quality of life and underground farming would increase land yield.

Isnt it the same as a normal skyscraper tho? It takes up the same amount of space as a normal skyscraper and you cant build above it since it requires space for sunlight to get in. It wouldnt really save up space. But if we could find a way to also build something above it while also letting enough sunlight through then i could see this as a very interesting idea.

Pros and cons. One is land slide, erosion and cost. It a lot of work to do water and waste. As well power if fail it would flood the place. Barrier set up and it would cost more so it not worth doing unless design different.

A project invented by a person who never got to dig deeper than 2 meters/6 ft. It's not earth that's the problem, its water. Water everywhere, it seeps from water horizons, it falls from the sky, it leaks and condensates. Unless you build it in like desert or permafrost, just to have any space underground not flooded immediately you'd need to fight with several hundred cubic meters of water (which is like VERY HEAVY) every day. Try saving energy when lifting 100 to 500 tonnes of water to the surface per day is the first requirement already

At some as yet unknown point, after the climate reaches equilibrium with the volume of GhG we have put back into the atmosphere (and still putting in), the only livable places on the Earth will be subterranean. Seems farfetched, but it's not. It's simple, or not so simple, atmospheric physics. We dug up energy that has been buried for millions of years and reintroduced it back into the climate system (that has been geared for less CO2). So much so that positive feedbacks are kicking in, so nature is releasing GhGs without direct human action. Namely methane and nitrous oxide, which both are more powerful heat trapping gases than carbon dioxide, and break down into carbon dioxide as a natural part of their life cycles. We will have to figure out how to grow food down there. If we can't, we are done. We're in for a much bumpier ride.

The worst idea in the world. Wait for a disaster, a collapse, a fire or whatever. It's a death trap. A high-rise building is ventilated and in the worst case, you can go down the stairs, they can take you out by helicopter. Try to escape from a hole by climbing 50 or 100 floors by stairs.

Would leaving gaps and spring like connections between the earth and the building make it more resistant to seismic activity? As for water, there could be pumps that would send excess water back to the surface. For sunlight, we could direct it underground with mirrors maybe?
