The Old Red Caboose at Emory Bar ~ A Slowly Decaying BC Rail Classic
While I did not number the episodes of this trilogy, the first entry was Hell's Gate, followed by Yale, and now with this, I'll polish off the movies from my spectacular day trip up the Fraser Canyon this summer.
After whizzing past the caboose on the way up to Hell's Gate, the leisurely drive back down to the Lower Mainland gave my friends and I time to investigate the quaint Esso fuel station. I'm so glad that we checked it out! Not only is the little Hope River General Store an absolute delight, full of not simply road food but proper fresh yumminess and plenty of handmade local Indigenous crafts scattered throughout the souvenir section.
Then there is the caboose. It was fascinating to be able to explore it in this un-restored state. It was even more fascinating to dive deep into the history of both cabooses and the British Columbia Railway Corporation. I could not possibly do justice to either in a mere seven minutes, so I encourage you to do your own research. If you are a railfan, you will be delighted by the former and scandalized by the latter! Enjoy!

Yale ~ Gold Rush Boomtown Historic Site ~ Beyond the Salish Sea ~ Adventures in British Columbia
มุมมอง 4221 วันที่ผ่านมา
Yale is set in a spectacularly beautiful part of British Columbia, so when I saw that the Yale Historic Site had a few tents to tell the tale of the boom, it immediately was added to the itinerary of a daytrip up the Fraser Canyon this summer. Western Canada has many examples of boomtowns gone bust, thanks in particular to various gold rushes. Few compare to Yale, though, a town now so small th...

When my friend suggested that we do a daytrip out to Hell's Gate to ride the Airtram, my jaw dropped. If you've seen my Solstice train journey aboard VIA Rail's Canadian, you know that I rolled past that bucket-list site realizing that I had to add boots on the ground to it someday. Situated on the TransCanada Highway a mere couple of hours from Vancouver, the site is very important in the hist...
Adventures of the Tea Grannies ~ Ep. 30 ~ Vancouver's Faubourg ~ Take-out Tea & Felix the Kitten!

When friends over on the Mainland mentioned that they were waiting for their new kitten to arrive, I immediately suggested that they should make tea, and I'd pick up treats and would see them soon! Thankfully, we have been chums since the '90s, so it was no big deal for me to have invited myself to their home like that. Kittens are only kittens for a very short time, and the tea salons in Vanco...
Toronto's CN Tower ~ Decades of Dreaming About It, So I Finally Rode That Elevator Up!

For decades I have dreamed of seeing the view from the observation deck of Toronto's CN Tower, specifically to look down on the train tracks and watch trains pulling in and out of Union Station. That little wish was simply because the very first time I saw the tower was from underneath it, aboard a VIA Rail dome car when I was 13. I wondered then what we looked like to anyone peering down from ...

Originally, when I started planning this adventure, it was around a conference in St. Catharines, Ontario, and would have seen me doing an overnight in Niagara Falls, plus some wine-country bike touring around Niagara-on-the-Lake. My sister and I had been talking about visiting the Wild Tart for quite some time, and both of us were keen to try their savoury tea, which does not include a sweet tier. I always kind of chuckle when those Hollywood types whinge about all the rain in Vancouver. I mean, it's a temperate rainforest. What did they expect? Personally, I absolutely adore a rainy day. Not only do they delay the inevitable forest fire smog of summer in Victoria, but they are ideal for a long walk in Beacon Hill Park, followed by a steaming cup of tea. How do you get back and forth between Victoria and Vancouver?
I either fly or take the ferry, typically, T, depending on how much time I have to dedicate to the trip. When flying, which is the fastest but pricier, that is either Harbour Air floatplanes or Helijet's Sikorskys. Dive into my channel, and you will find several examples with great views, including my very first helicopter ride ever. When I take the ferry, which takes longer but costs less, I like to use the Crosswater coach run by Wilson's Group, which will go from main bus depot to main bus depot in both cities. While I have the odd clip of this in various videos, you've made me realize that I should do one just about that experience. Thanks for the idea! :-)
I will definitely have to pay a visit. Looks amazing 😍
Adorable little kitty☺️
Fun to see the kitten and another tea
I lived in Trenton as a teenager in the 1970's and we would drive the 100 miles to Toronto on a Friday night for something to do. On one of these trips we went up the CN tower - I haven't been back there since.
Oh, neat! Did you ever go to the Sparkles disco?
My favourite thing about the view from up there is seeing the skyline growing. Every time I go up there it seems like the amount of skyscrapers has doubled! But I can appreciate the railfanning from up there too - enjoy it while you can since there is a proposal for a rail deck park between Blue Jays Way and Bathurst Street that will block that whole segment from view from above, although having the park there connecting the adjacent neighbourhoods will be super nice too! In fact, there's already one smaller one at the CIBC Square Elevated Park with awesome views of the trains! I highly recommend that spot for any railfans visiting Toronto 🙂
Thanks for the heads-up about the potential for that awesome train view to be lost, V! The news confirms for me the fact that this little channel of mine is partly an archival project, whether I like it or not. A park would be nice, for sure, and I will absolutely check out the one already there you mentioned with train views. Now I'm thinking I'll need to be back in Toronto for the sparkly nighttime views from the CN Tower sooner rather than later.

We were in Victoria last week for a short trip. Since we had a wait before we could check-in to our hotel, we decided to spend that time at Beacon Hill Park right across the street from the hotel. These camas flowers were a nice little surprise.
Clear and I can feel your love for trains 😊😊
Planned this trip in mid July 2024
Great! Enjoy the journey!🚂😁📸
How was your trip? I'm doing Toronto to Winnipeg in November. Did the same trip in 1993
It was on my wishlist to have a long journey by Canadian rail and had booked the VIA train well in advance from Vancouver to Edmonton. It was a timely departure from Trans Pacific station . Most of passengers were tourists.Lovely views from the glass dome of a long train meandering along gushing clear watered Frazer river was an experience of its worth ! Lo and behold! I wasn't fully awake in wee hours when I overheard an attendant announcing that the train had reversed from Kamloops at midnight and we are heading back to Vancouver! The cause was an unfortunate forest fire ahead around Jasper .As no alternate travel plan was announced but a ticket refund ,so I booked a flight to Edmonton. Why travel to Vancouver when my flight was from Abbotsford? Surpringly, the train authorities after much deliberation and permission from higher ups accepted my request to alight at Abbotsford. It was mid of nowhere in fields as there is no designated stoppage or even station there! My friend Sukhi Bhathal was handy as ever to pick me up from there.
@@84manjit Sorry to hear. My brother is working in Alberta and was sent to Edmonton due to the fires. He is back working again near Jasper.
Wow
This one was fun to watch while riding my indoor bike!
Well done, dude…
So pretty and fun🌺🌸🌼!
Beautiful, is this place handicapped friendly
Good question. It isn't the best place in Victoria if you cannot do stairs, unfortunately. I have visited twice, and since this comment is on the first one, here is the link to the second: th-cam.com/video/sB_50Pb1hsw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NWr1s9qUHmdScZYd . In it, you can see the easiest path up to the teahouse, which does have several steps. That said, I know that they have a back service door, and it may be accessible. I would check with them regarding any specific mobility issues: www.abkhaziteahouse.com/abkhazi-garden. It may not be as elegant an entrance through the kitchen if that can be arranged with them, but the tea tower there is always delicious. Best wishes!
Wonderful
Thanks for sharing. I rode from Vancouver to Calgary back in 1986 and have wanted to complete the journey to Toronto ever since. I'm going over Christmas this year - boarding in Edmonton on Christmas Eve. My wife and I were supposed to go in March of 2021 but cancelled due to covid. Unfortunately she passed away in August of that year so we never got the chance to go so I'm doing the trip solo. Spending Christmas on a train is going to be a different experience!
Sorry to hear of your loss, SS.😥 Train travel here in Canada is nice for solo travellers, I think. It is safe and friendly in my experience. Since you will be aboard for Christmas, I'm guessing that you will have a yummy turkey with new train chums in the dining car!🎄🚂🤩
Beautiful and cute little tea house. I love it!😊
I'm not a 'railfan' but I'll be taking the trip this year. Economy class is such a tough way to travel on such a long trip. I think it's worth it to spend a couple of hundred dollars more for a berth so you can enjoy the meal service as well as have a comfortable sleep. I am going to travel Edmonton-Toronto return for Christmas, but I'm saving and splurging on a cabin for 1.
Edmonton to Toronto is a long trip, SS! You are making the right call with a place to sleep for that duration, for sure! Being able to go to the dining car will be lovely, too. I'm not sure if you saw my Christmas trip from Edmo to Vancouver on the Canadian a couple of years ago, but it was spectacularly chilly, so do bring layers! Enjoy your trip, and let me know how it goes! 🚂😁
Thanks! I'm doing the 'Canadian' from Edmonton to Toronto return this Christmas. I board on Christmas eve and get home on New Year's eve.

What a wonderful video!!! Your enthusiasm is contagious 😊
Hello from the Philippines! I enjoy watching this video. My parents and I are going to visit Edmonton in the summer next year and Vancouver is also in our list. Travelling by train sounds fun. May I know how much it cost per person to travel from Vancouver to Edmonton? I might do the trainspotting too if I get the chance. Haha! Hope to hear from you. Thanks!
The cost varies depending on which ticket class you purchase and when you buy. The train doesn't run every day, so you will need to plan that, for sure. Here's the link to VIA Rail's website: www.viarail.ca/en. You can put in the cities and dates, then choose the ticket class to see how much each will cost. Summer is a great time to visit Edmonton! There are tons of festivals, and the river valley is gorgeous. Happy travels! Let me know how it goes when you get back.🚂😁

Hmm... Frankly, it never occurred to me not to have music, KC, since I essentially make silent movies. Glad you thought it was nice. 🚁
Your video is great! Did you like your high tea experience over there? Was is yummy? I’m planning to take my mom for Mothers Day and I have never been there before … we were at Secret Garden in Kerrisdale but they are fully booked.
The service was wonderful. You can tell they really care. The food is a bit fresher at Neverland on Broadway, but they only do set times instead of staggering the reservations, so it feels unpleasantly like feeding time at the zoo until you are in and seated, when the zookeeper disappears and you get a lovely server. Mother's Day, though, is coming up quickly! Best of luck!
@@NeptunianLibrarian thank you for letting me know!

The Ocean train is by far one of my favorites that I had the pleasure to experience, crew was great and the Sainte Foy location was a little bonus for the sleeping class passengers, because of the length of the Ocean train, Sleeping Class gets a slightly longer fresh air break because the train will move a bit so that the Economy can come out and we can get back on after. one of the crew told me about that little tid bit of information. Had a cabin for 2 on the train but last time I was on it they still had the dome cars and a park car but the park car and I believe dome car removed
Thanks for this, SS! A Dome and Park car would have been great! Lucky you! Alas, neither were there on my trip, or I certainly would have filmed that for everyone. With the bookend baggage cars, I guess the Park car, with it's view of the tracks out back, can't happen, but a Dome car or two would be nice! 🤩
@@NeptunianLibrarian it was because of the Transport Canada requiring the baggage car bookends that they removed the park car, not really sure why they got rid of the dome car. But I am glad you enjoyed the trip, the last time I took that train, was when my friend and I moved to Winnipeg and we took the train there, the newish blue cars you were on, were being fixed or something so they used the older stainless steel cars, we got bumped up to a cabin for three instead of two but shortly after departing Halifax we started to notice an issue in the washrooms. Via staff thought it might have meant the tank was full in the car so they arranged for a septic truck to meet the train in Moncton, but alas it turned out to be an electrical issue and none of the toilets in the entire car worked, they could have moved us to a different cabin in another car but it would not be a cabin for 3 and since those are at the end of each car and the restrooms for the next car was just a few feet from us, we declined because we both wanted the lower berth beds so we would not need a ladder, we got compensated for the issue and the 24 hour delay of The Canadian but made it to Winnipeg ok
