4:29 I'm extremely curious if Emma is referring to a different study. Link to the actual study is in the first sentence: esciencecommons.blogspot.com/2016/08/a-dogs-dilemma-do-canines-prefer-praise.html?m=1 All the headlines seem to say what Emma did, but that's not actually what this showed from a training perspective. Neurally in an area associated with intrinsic reward, the strength of praise and food reward was on par for the majority of subjects (73%). This means praise did not cause a stronger neural response than food in almost 75% of the dogs. Most relevant to agility, when there was a behavioral component (easy maze with 1 choice leading to food and the other to the owner with their back turned), all but a few of the dogs alternated in their choice of food or human who gave praise. Even the 4 out of 15 dogs with the super strong neural reaction to owner praise made a behavioral choice for the owner only 80% of the time. Put another way... About 25% of the dogs had a stronger neural response in a reward center of the brain, but even this 25% picked food 1/5 times when given a behavioral choice.

This is the greatest reframing or repurposing of the old agility and driving metaphor. I'm sure it helped me to figure it out on my own, but wow, this would have been mind blowing a few years ago. 18 or 24 weaves even for a seasoned dog? No. That's not ideal for most dogs. I don't believe in building that sort of stamina when it will never ever ever be necessary for 99+% of dogs.
Once or twice. Not opposed. Excessive training, no not necessary.

Number 1 breakdown is the mess we create with motion versus verbal. Dogs are watchers, not listeners. Listening needs to be taught and handler executing clean verbal releases - always and forever...else!

The 2x2 method blows my mind. I think it is a cool training strategy. I just need to watch the video several more times to really let it all sink in!
Boom! Blew my mind too...I racked my brain trying to figure out a way to dogs and handlers better and it finally came to me. I really think it is amazing as I watch more and more dogs get it using this new method. My goal was to take the handlers out of it as much as possible and help the dogs understand the bend required within the load zone. Hope it helps you. Let me know if you have any questions. Woofs.

What cue do you use to release to the treat behind vs. taking the jump?
In the early days, I use a very big hand signal and "get it" cue for the treat, then transition to more verbal cues of "Okaygetit" versus "Okayjump"
do you think your name call and weave cue are similar enough to cause enough confusion for the entry?
I was definitely hearing that!!!! More so with my threadle cue and his name. I personally think the weave cue is speed, but I may need to rethink how I say things. I'm hearing a lot of similar sounds.
Where do feed the reward for increasing the value of the wraping/cone: after every wrap, after several wraps in a row or mix?
While there is a little bit of building value for the cone, this exercise is more about teaching mechanics of turning, bending and teaching the handler about pull turns. Value building for the cone, then jump stanchion, is built more during two target work. Then we'll go back to this exercise to help continue to build value and commitment to the cone/jump. To actually answer your question, I do a mix, depending on the dog.

@@jeffreyH360 Linda Meckenburg has some great grid stuff, specifically her ZigZag grid exercise. I studied her a lot for single jumping mechanics. Lots of great grid stuff by Kim Collins, she is awesome. I also studied some Susan Clothier.

Congratulations! Super team ! Great video for us to watch . Two quick questions- why treats are “ away from regular treat table ? - is it because it’s get kind of crazy busy around it with other dogs and handlers ? Second question- why harness ? Where did you order it from ?
Treats are away from the treat table because he is young, and the treat table is crowded, unpredictable dogs show up and I wanted to play it safe. I go back and forth on harness vs collar, but I explain more about it in my podcast Eli's first trial. Mostly to prevent throat damage. I like the BrilliantK9 harness.

Beautiful story
She’s currently learning her weave poles. Love her and she still won’t let me near her. The fear remains although last week she didn’t avoid me and ran her course right past me when her handler failed to do a side change. So I’m not that scary anymore, at least not last week.
