Appalachian Natives | Backcountry Fly Fishing for Smoky Mountain Brook Trout
Finally, after nearly two years of canceled trips due to weather, busy schedules, and school, I was able to make a multiday trip into the heart of the Smoky Mountain National Park. The fish here are not big, but they are incredibly resilient to the changes that have happened within the park over the last century. Logging companies harvested huge swaths of the mountain landscape, destroying much of the old forest. It was only after the logging companies sold the barren land that it was turned into a national park.
There are some areas of the park that were not logged. Some stands of old growth forest still remain, though they are tucked high into the mountains in more or less inaccessible areas of the park. The native fauna and brook trout also thrived in these inaccessible regions, undisturbed.

Teeth | Fly Fishing for Longnose Gar
มุมมอง 3Kปีที่แล้ว
With a week off from school, I decided to take some time to showcase fly fishing for Longnose Gar, one of the most underappreciated rough fish to target. These are some incredibly ancient fish, dating back all the way to Pleistocene era. With a lifespan of around twenty years, they can grow to over five feet long and weigh around 40lbs. A primitive lung allows them to thrive in areas with low o...

While visiting extended family in Florida, I decided to spend a day exploring the Everglades area on my kayak. Fall Streamer Fishing | Montana

Last week I managed to slip off for a little to target big pre-spawn browns moving upstream. The weather turned nasty the night before, resulting in rising water and a lot of overhead cloud cover with the occasional rain. Honesty, just about every river and lake in Georgia has them. Typically behind dams or around big bends in rivers where the Eddie’s form up at. If you fish for them with a fly rod then you’ll need the water to be somewhat clear so you can sight fish them.

      Yeah man, start with an eight weight. Good all around rod for fresh/saltwater species. As far as specific brands, I like lamson’s reels for freshwater and TFO rods. However, I would highly suggest using Facebook marketplace if you can’t drop a ton of money on a set up, there’s a lot of good pre-used rod/reel combos that guys don’t use anymore or upgraded to something else. I imagine poppers and streamers would work well for all three of those species. Make sure to do some research as well, there’s a lot of guys in Florida going after freshwater stuff on fly rods. Fly shops down there are a good resource. Hope that helps!

      @@halfmoonflyfishing Thanks man. Apologies, yes, I am aware that the everglades are in the south and southwest of Florida but I was actually probing for a more precise info on exactly what body of water(s) on where to focus some attention on tbh; even the body of waters where you were fishing exactly, or where it might be close to? Hope you don't mind me asking, no problem if you don't wish to be more specific.. Its just that I'd be coming a long way (UK) and really need some precise locations and advice on what waters are particularly good to fish.. thanks again

      @@chuckarooful if you are coming from the UK I am the last person to ask for advice unfortunately. I have very limited experience fly fishing in saltwater. Your best best is to hire a guide to show you around and put you on fish. Just my opinion, you can do it yourself but chances are you won’t find what your looking for.

      @@halfmoonflyfishing No problem buddy. No worries. We will hire guides for sure but we can't afford to hire guides every day of our trip, they are way too expensive for us unfortunately, that's why we are looking for some DIY options like kayaking the way you are doing this video..We just need some ideas of where to try, we have no idea where, the place in the video looks perfect.. 👍

      @@chuckarooful Completely understandable. I won't give specifics, but definitely look for larger canal systems with a lot of current. Google Earth is how I found mine. The more water moving from the tides usually means better fishing (saltwater at least).

    You know what’s funny is I used to run the exact same setup as you! TFO Clouser 10wt and Lamson liquid 9-10.

      Ironically the TFO 10wt Mangrove was my backup rod, glad I had it with me though. I'll probably end up getting a 8wt version of it at some point this year. Thanks for subscribing!

    Thanks for sharing! I've been wanting to do a kayak trip in the swamp. How long did it take y'all to paddle to that Island and did you have any kind of cell service? My wife will not let me go solo if I have know way to communicate in case of an emergency!

    • @halfmoonflyfishing
      @halfmoonflyfishing ปีที่แล้ว

      Took about 30 minutes to the island, that was fishing along the way too. We did have cell service but it was spotty, I would bring a Garmin or something of that sort to communicate with if I went there solo. But really neat area, it’s a special place. Good luck to you! Oh and make sure you look up the regulations for kayaking in the swamp before you go.
