The Most Scandalous Concert in History
มุมมอง 1.3K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Skandalkonzert is the colloquial name given to a notorious concert that took place near the start of the 20th century. German for "scandal concert," this particular event is known today for all the wrong reasons... But what happened on this infamous day? And why are so few people actually aware of this historical nugget? And most important of all, what impact did this relatively unknown scandal...
The Composer Who Never Existed

Can You Make Pleasant Music Using the Twelve Tone Technique?

THis is cool, but flute and second violin parts are too boring. Why not to add some melodic lines to them? Maybe even some polyphonic imitations. It would sound a little sharper, but not empty

Great suggestion! At the time that I wrote this piece (which was quite a few years ago), my primary objective was to simply shape and reinforce the individual chords that constituted the main melodic line (to ultimately create a sense of diatonicism). If I ever find the time to go back to this composition, I will certainly try to incorporate your feedback!

I think you would enjoy the Swedish song _Du som gick före oss_ which is a 12-tone melody that's actually part of their Christian song book (psalmboken) - it's based on the same premise of making a tonal 12-tone piece, and IMO it does a pretty good job, e.g., listen to the Voces8 version

I too have tried inventing methods to write "tonal" twelve-tone music - My solution eventually settled on writing series in such a way, each tetracord have notes I can use as tonic, subdominant and dominant in a given tonality, either them being the traditional 1st, 4th and 5th degrees or accounting for the possible substitution of the latter two with notes of the same dimished seventh (i.e.: first tetrachord starts on C, second contains F, third one G; I'll write the rest of them in such a way the inversion, which will start on C too, can contain either an F, an Ab, a B or a D in its second tetrachord and a G, a Bb, a C# or an E in its third one; retrogradations also have to work in a similar way). Eventually works, but given Schönberg wanted to achieve complete atonality with his method using it in a tonal way sounds a bit like kidding him to me 😃😃.

No. The scandal was the DANCE, not the music. Sacre was performed in concert (ie: music only) to immense public acclaim the following summer. People didn't suddenly develop a deep understanding of music which they did not have the preceding year. The problem with Sacre's premiere was a ballet audience expecting ballet dancers wearing traditional ballet apparel doing traditional ballet moves. They got NONE of that from Nijinsky's choreography nor from Roerich's set designs and costumes.

    • @MREmusique
      @MREmusique 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@AndyBakerUK there is no "infamous Strawinski concert". There was a remarkably successful concert premiere less than a year after the "infamous ballet premiere". Music critics from that period lauded the work for the masterpiece it was. The ballet premiere, on the other hand, makes for a more salacious read, a "scandal" in the classical arts world. This is why that performance is so often cited and has built mythic qualities over time. Yes, there WAS a scandal, and a raucous fight broke out with a certain segment of the audience. But this was not a "concert", it was not a "concert audience". It was a ballet performance, with completely different expectations from attendees of that time. What I said "No." to was that Strawinski's music was the cause. It was not. Nijinsky's primitivist choreography, something never before seen at that time, was the cause of it.

Sorry man, have to give you a thumbs diwn for using the phrase "art music" for the classical super-genre. The phrase is useless as a descriptor (because "art" does _not_ say anything about what style the music is), and inexcusable in it's arrogance (because it implies that only classical-ish styles are art). The phrase should be uniformly rejected as unfit-for-purpose instead of being used.

I disagree with the idea that the technique was not intended to be pleasant to the ear. Schönberg was convinced that over time, people would find this music as beatiful and pleasurable as the music of Mozart for example. This clearly hasn`t happened so far, but that doesn`t change Schönbergs intentions.

PDQ Bach, the invention of Peter Schickele to poke fun at the Baroque era music. I'm not too sure where I first heard about the "least talented of Bach's many children," but it made me laugh out loud and wonder if these were high brow "Weird Al" parodies.

Thank you very much for this piece of information! In return I could recommend Gentle Giant, a very different classic-inspired rock band, and many more...

I do like to use that way of writing 12 tone, or using the row as a progression as a series of root movements. Great video!

A slight correction: "PDQ Bach" first appeared when the young Peter Schickele, his younger brother David, and their friend Ernie decided to have a little musical fun while still in high school and recorded the "Sanka Cantata". (The piece appears in the CD box collection.) 2:50 Have you heard the original Beethoven's fifth done as a sports event? "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" in "PDQ Bach on the Air". 3:25 Oh, dear. Rest in Peace, Peter Schickele.

I had the good fortune to attend a New Year's Day PDQ Bach concert in 1971, with Zubin Mehta conducting the LA Philharmonic. (And, of course, Peter Schickele rappelling down out of the balcony of the concert hall!) What a blast!

WF was actually an alcoholic and kind of a hack. I've never actually heard of him in any other light. It seems like he was kind of a real life PDQ.

I had the chance to see Peter Schickele perform "The Intimate P.D.Q. Bach" at the Center For The Arts in Midland MI when I was studying music theory at Delta College in 1974. Our Professor suggested we go to the show. She didn't tell us anything about it so we didn't have any idea what to expect. The next class she asked what we thought about it. I told her my favorite part was "Calliope Four Hands." She agreed with me.
