I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the performance of "Le maschere", an opera so rarely performed that it's a shame. The conducting, orchestra, and most voices are very good (brava Colombina!). There is so much music in this opera, so much melody, that it's almost overwhelming. Mascagni was truly the king of melody. Nobody of his generation surpassed him in that respect (Puccini envied him his talent for melody, and Puccini was rarely short of melodic inspiration). Now who is going to stage all four acts of "Parisina", the masterpiece of Mascagni's maturity?

There's another production (unfortunately without subtitles) on TH-cam which isn't an insult to anyone's intelligence. The Finale Ultimo states the world's gratitude to Italy for Commedia (pronounced "coMAYDyah") over the centuries. The "updating" just showed up all its inconsistencies: hopefully there are no more marriage contracts, arranged marriages, duels, servants etc.. Isn't "wellness" old hat by now? We don't want beautiful sets and costumes rationed! The British pantomime comes from the proper meaning which is "mime". Indeed in Victorian times there was a short harlequinade added to the fairy-tale story, with that and other Commedia dell'Arte characters. Even Mozart played Harlequin as a mime role to the music he'd written himself! "Music for a Comedy". I hope "the Critic" honours the work more.
