Jacketing Diplodocus Fossils at the Mother's Day Quarry!
Ever wondered how fossils make their journey from the dig site to the lab? 🦖✨ Join us at the Mother’s Day Site as Daniel (one of our field techs) and our 2024 students work together to jacket Diplodocus fossils.
Fossil jacketing involves carefully encasing bones in plaster to protect them during transport. The mixture of plaster and water creates a protective cast around the bones, keeping them safe from any jostling movement. This process requires teamwork, precision, and a whole lot of patience to ensure the fossils arrive safely for preparation and study in the lab.
The Mother’s Day Site, one of the most productive dinosaur quarries in the world, continues to reveal incredible finds, and we’re proud to share this behind-the-scenes look at how we safeguard these discoveries.
Stay tuned to learn more about the science, the techniques, and the stories behind our work!

This incredible fossil offers scientists a rare glimpse into the life of Homotherium, a lesser-known Ice Age predator built for speed and endurance. Unlike its cousin, Smilodon, Homotherium had shorter, serrated canines and long legs, perfect for chasing prey across the tundra. This poor little cub...
