    Painting is something from inside myself, I try to be present in my action, but I am led in the similar direction each time I begin a painting, I am in a place between where I stand and a horizon, the unattainable horizon, above and below, present, a what comes is what you just read inner world and something beyond itself. Beautiful

    Personally I see a few things happening here. An orientation of how it feels prioritized over what it is. A building of image by facets. And again, in my opinion, the rawness of these particular images reveal his dance steps and give insight into what he thinks make a painting both interesting to paint and to look at.

    Hi Jordan, this is so much better than a podcast being able to spy into your studio! Thank you. Could you please shed more light on Frank scraping down his paintings each day? I have tried to search on line but cannot find info as to why he did it. Surely if you scrape down at the end of the day you take off all the days work? I discovered in my search that Manet liked to do the same thing. This idea is new to me and I am currently scraping month old paint off a painting as I don’t’ like the texture. I am a lover of texture but in this case I think it is ugly and looks over worked. Did Frank do it so that he could work on a flat painting each day do you think?

    • @JordanWolfson
      @JordanWolfson หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I remember correctly both Catherine Lampert's book and Robert Hughes' book both discuss why he scraped off after each day's work. I believe his impulse was to bring the image into being all at once, a whole thing, at one go. Each day's work was like a performance or a rehearsal. One shot. And he scraped it off if he felt it didn't surprise him, and bring something striking into the world. That's why he worked everyday - because if he waited for two days the paint would be harder to scrape off!

    i understand your emotion but in the end, that is tears running down your face. put some paint on a canvas. stand close and far away. mix up new paint; the color, consistency, and viscosity you want. apply with freedom love and concentration. watch the paint touch the surface, leave the brush and spread over the canvas. this morning I was in that place. it's very satisfying.

    Wow. Swimming upstream, assembling moments. Shaping them into a whole. A day reading Berger is a richer day. He resisted well - the dissipation - maybe he figured out death does not belong to us. It’s an affront, and an outrage, a liar. He drifted away from Marxism, like Weil, because it was too small.

    • @JordanWolfson
      @JordanWolfson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Berger was truly something - what a gift! I'm not sure he ever drifted away from Marxism, although he was less strident as he grew older, and clearly there was more to his sensibility than that. There's a wonderful biography on him that came out shortly after his death. Focusing more on his creative progression, than say, on his personal life as such. It's quite beautiful.

    I would be interested in a reading group. My 2 cents…it’s all I’ve got. “Being is the practice and that is social and political.” That’s quite a thesis! Does she expound on this? Because I am not seeing the connective tissue between Dewey’s ideas and Jacob’s ideas. It seems like a big leap. Am I missing something? Or is it in fact a big leap? I don’t see how someone reacts to my painting as the social but as the personal. I don’t think I would paint if I saw it as social! I can’t think in these terms social/political. People who talk like this scare me, because it inevitably does lead to coercion, imo. I don’t feel like a teacher when I am painting. I prefer to think in terms of the personal and get to policy, if we must, on that road. But I don’t think one can legislate community or love or generosity or making. I think that’s so very dangerous. It seems like it always leads in the opposite direction. I get that she is trying to get to love/charity/community, which is natural and admirable, but I just don’t see this as the way. I see the personal as the only way. I do relate to what Dewey says though, and I think on some level, perhaps the best level, the purest level, painting, making, is play.
