Adding procedural breakup to a Basalt Generator - Houdini
มุมมอง 433ปีที่แล้ว
Adding a quick extra step to allow upresing and adding breakup to the columns by converting the geo into a VDB and running noise patterns through vdb reshapes (dilates and erodes). This could be useful to set up Mid range and Hero assets and get them ready for a proper sculpt. For further away geo I would leave it with the basic geo and let the shader do the work. Basalt Generator in Houdini
มุมมอง 3.3Kปีที่แล้ว
A short timelapse of my technique of generating basalt columns using a hair system! its a fairly robust technique that allows you to comb the strands and cut out specific areas that dont work. I also very briefly show the distance from geometry node that can be useful for grabbing an attribute and multiplying it with the length to allow you to grow basalt against walls, etc. This is a simplifie...

Amazing! I'm inspired :)
Hi bro i'm speechless. You're awesome man. Anyway can i have your personal contact ?
big fan
thats so random, how does this not have mio of views???
There are hundreds of good FX artists that's why. It's very unlikely that everyone got so much visibility. I agree that this one is very good thought and could have more views, but I am counting more than 100k today and just this it's pretty impressive for an artist working in the industry
10k sorry
so good!
🔥 great job
You use houdini as your main software for set dressing and maya for modeling?
Amazing work!... From where did you learn all this from?
Man, you are legend. Helicopter scene is my favoutite.
Wow, this is so realistic. Excellent work
Amazing work.
Just wow !
Are you open to work with independent filmmakers like myself? 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Sorry, not at the moment.
+1 Follower here amazing work!
buddy, this is awesome! keep going!
HI JACK. JUST SAW UR AMAZING WORK. CAN U SUGGEST ME FROM WHERE I COULD LEARN VFX OR CAN U TELL FROM WHERE DID U LEARN VFX .I AM VERY CONFUSED .CAN U HELP ME .CAN YOU SEE MY WORK
It depends on which area you would like to specialise in, I started off small, working on a personal project per month. Each personal project I tried to push my boundries a bit more and learn a new technique or piece of software. Lots of googling, youtube videos and forums. I would really recommend studying the fundamentals of what makes an image look good. Check out books like "Colour and light" by James Gurney or "Framed ink" by Marcos Mateu-Mestre. Focus on specific areas of your skillset and slowly expand and try parts of the entire pipeline! Its really useful to know what people need from you and what you need from other departments. I would recommend a lot of different tutorials like ones on learn squared or artstation. Theres also a lot of great content on youtube such as Feng Zhus Design Cinema. I also have released a tutorial on pixelfront which gives an overall look of creating a shot from concept to final composite. Ive been teaching myself since around 2008 and then went to university for a vfx and animation degree in 2012. The most important thing is patience, It can take a long time to figure out how it all works but it definitely helps to break things down to smaller projects and build up your skillsets.
Do you using clarisse now?
No. Clarisse has stopped support, but the principals of it can be used in various other softwares. I continue to use houdini as my primary 3D package, along with maya and zbrush.
@@JackStevensvfx okay~thanks for your anwser! It 's pity to recieve that clarisse has been stooped.
music is going crazy. love it
fire
Wow, the way you see things and your designs are just mind-blowing! Seriously impressive stuff.
This is awesome
incredible, such awesome variety. Have any tips for ice shaders? Those auquman shots looked so good
I think it's a good idea to make different shaders for different distances/scales of ice. For the large pieces, medium small and tiny pieces, then you can balance the refraction, transmission and SSS independently and try and bring out the real cobalt blue in some of the cracks. These shaders also use the p world to procedurally shade things like anything below the waterline will have a difference in albedo and a different specular and it allows you to add variation across a large distance to keep things from looking tiled. Because there is some floating ice and shelving ice (fx destruction) moving through the worldspace I also had to build a similar shader that used the p ref utility instead of p world so textures won't slide off when it moves around. I've seen some amazing results with having transmission in the shader and then creating a volume shader for everything inside so it's more physically correct, but complexity and render times can be quite an issue.
@@JackStevensvfx absolute gold, thankyou so much for details! Will definitely be referring back to this 🙏
cool
Damn
Which render engine is used??
Hey, there are a few different render engines used throughout my reel, Mostly Arnold, Redshift and Clarisse's Renderer. Arnold is my preferred choice though.
@@JackStevensvfx what apps do you use for modeling, texturing, rendering?
@@bbrother92 Hey, I use Zbrush, Houdini, Gaea for most terrain based modelling and maya for other types of modelling. Most Terrain Texturing I would try and do procedurally with triplanar setups and projections, But I really like Mari and substance for hero texturing.
@@JackStevensvfx Super!
@@JackStevensvfx Is Houdini meant to be modeled? I thought it is meant to stimulate
very very good
EPIC 🔥
Nice music ..
Wow - really cool!
and to VDB then)
very cool!
This video reminds me to forgot the complexity of the program and just keep it simple and make stunning art. ❤❤❤. Absolutely loved the process and result.
Great, Jack!
Keep doing your best work.🙂
damn awesome work man!
I have no idea why or how I got recommended this video but its pretty good
hahaha The algo did well, Everyone should see the secrets of Houdini!
Wow this is crazy, how can I learn to do this?
Hi ! I don't know if you'll see this comment but i'm thrilling to take this course, the think i'm worried about is the importance of Maya, i do not use it, i'm more a blender guy (and actually i'm an houd' artist) so is it possible to follow along without maya ? Thanks a lot !
Hey, Yeah you for sure can get similar results using other software, you dont need to follow things along 100% Its more about the general workflow and how you can achieve a final image using different tools. I dont use blender personally but it has a lot of great tools that im sure would be useful for terrain generation!
@@JackStevensvfx thanks for this fast answer !! Cool I'll definitely take it next month. A last question, what is the importance of Houdini in this workflow ?
@@PoulpyLordofoctopus Houdini is pretty important as I build the entire scene, setting up scattering systems, light, build shaders and render it all within Houdini. So it would be a lot of work to transfer that knowledge to another software but the same principles can be used.
@@JackStevensvfx perfect ! Did you render with mantra ?
@@PoulpyLordofoctopus This was rendered with Arnold in Houdini if I remember correctly
That was great but why the hell you only spend couple seconds at end showing finished picture 😂 I had to pause the video. You should of left like could 30 seconds of the finished painting
Thanks! Ill keep that in mind when I upload more in the future! :)
wow why have I not seen your channel before! Love your artstation, and will defenitly follow your videos and tutorials to come! :)
Thanks for that! Ill try and keep new stuff coming soon!
Thank you for the videos jack! As a student who aspires to break into this field, your videos really do help me learn about DMP techniques!
Glad to hear that! Ill keep trying to upload timelapses and create longer tutorials at some point!
Where do you learn this power?
Lots and lots of practice!
Amazing!!! I hope you can make more these! Pure gold
Espectacular! Gracias por compartir!
Awesome stuff Jack! What brush you use in the blocking phase (edges planar something)? Where can I buy it?
Hey man, thanks! It's a custom brush but you can pretty much recreate it using a trim dynamic brush, with a square alpha and tweaking a couple settings to get a feeling you like.
@@JackStevensvfx Thanks for the reply! I'm gonna try to create one then. Cheers!
Very nice! Been meaning to check out Gaea, it looks pretty sleek
It's very fun to test out, has some very nice erosion tools!
