Why do some people have red hair?
The answer to this question lies in our genes, specifically in a gene called MC1R, which is responsible for melanin in our bodies. Melanin is the pigment that determines our hair, skin and eye color. There are two main types of melanin: eumelanin (dark) and pheomelanin (red).
People with red hair have a mutation in the MC1R gene that results in more pheomelanin being produced. Instead of a mixture of eumelanin and pheomelanin, which most people have, pheomelanin dominates in people with red hair, resulting in the characteristic red hair color.
Interestingly, the MC1R gene is recessive. This means that a person needs two copies of this mutated gene - one from each parent - to have red hair. Therefore, red hair is relatively rare and occurs in only about 1-2% of the world's population.
Another fascinating detail: people with red hair are often more sensitive to pain and require different amounts of anesthetics, which is also linked to the MC1R gene.
So, there you have it: a genetic anomaly that causes a whole range of fascinating physical traits and sensitivities!

A Continent of Giants: Life in North America 30,000 Years Ago
มุมมอง 1
Thirty thousand years ago, North America was a land of vast, untamed wilderness. Ice sheets had not yet reached their greatest extent, but glaciers covered much of northern Canada. Mammoths, mastodons, and giant ground sloths roamed the plains, feeding on grasslands and forests. Saber-toothed cats and dire wolves hunted in fierce competition, shaping a brutal food chain. Humans had just begun t...
The Last Mammoth Hunters: A Changing World 10,000 Years Ago in North America
มุมมอง 1ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Ten thousand years ago, North America stood on the brink of a dramatic transformation. Towering ice sheets from the last Ice Age were melting, reshaping the landscape with massive glacial floods that carved rivers and formed the Great Lakes. The climate warmed rapidly, turning tundra into vast forests filled with bison and deer. Early human groups, like the Clovis people, thrived by hunting gia...
Racing Against Time: Climate Change Speeds Up Faster Than We Thought, listen and discover
มุมมอง 72 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Recent research shows that climate change is accelerating faster than previously predicted. Feedback loops, such as Arctic ice loss and warming oceans, are amplifying the effects, driving rising temperatures, stronger storms, and faster sea-level rise. Thawing permafrost is also releasing potent greenhouse gases. With extreme weather events increasing worldwide, the timeline to prevent catastro...
The Return of the Brontosaurus: How Science Resurrected a Legend, listen and discover
มุมมอง 1152 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The story of Brontosaurus is a fascinating example of how science evolves. Discovered in 1879, it was later dismissed as a misidentified Apatosaurus. For over a century, Brontosaurus was considered a scientific error-until a 2015 study proved it was a distinct genus after all. This dramatic reversal shows that science is a dynamic process of learning and revision, turning a supposed mistake int...
How an Asteroid Ended the Age of Dinosaurs - and Gave Rise to a New World, listen and discover
มุมมอง 537 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Sixty-six million years ago, a massive asteroid struck Earth, creating the Chicxulub crater and unleashing catastrophic events that wiped out the dinosaurs. The impact caused firestorms, blocked sunlight, and triggered a global collapse of ecosystems. However, this mass extinction cleared the way for mammals to thrive, eventually leading to the rise of humans. The event, while devastating, resh...
The Genetic Rewrite: How Gene Editing is Transforming Medicine and Beyond, just listen and imagine

Gene editing, particularly with the tool CRISPR-Cas9, allows scientists to precisely modify DNA, offering revolutionary possibilities in medicine and beyond. It can correct genetic mutations responsible for diseases like sickle cell anemia and certain forms of blindness, providing potential cures. CRISPR is also being used to develop personalized cancer therapies by modifying immune cells to be...

มุมมอง 109 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Quantum computers use qubits, which can be both 0 and 1 at the same time, enabling them to process vast possibilities simultaneously. They also leverage entanglement, where linked qubits work together instantly, speeding up complex calculations. Unlike traditional computers, quantum machines could revolutionize fields like cryptography by breaking existing codes or creating unbreakable security...
How the Moon Shapes Earth’s Weather and Climate, just listen and imagine
มุมมอง 169 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The moon influences the Earth's weather and climate in surprising ways. Its gravity creates the tides, the heat distribution of the oceans and thus global weather systems. The moon also stabilizes the Earth's axis, which makes regular seasons possible. Without it, the Earth's tilt would fluctuate chaotically, with dramatic consequences for the climate. Even air pressure and rainfall change depe...
How Ancient Sunlight Powers Our World, just listen and imagine

Fossil fuels are the remains of plants and microorganisms that have stored solar energy through photosynthesis. We use this energy today as heat and electricity, which means that even our modern power plants are ultimately based on sunlight.
