I'm going to listen to this while being Sisyphus and rolling a rock up a hill of the last work I need to do for this whole silly dream of becoming an attorney I'm doing. As such, I will chronicle thoughts every now and again as the video goes and I listen along. Will it be worth reading? God only knows, I'm doing this more for me than you. I have no expectation of you to read it. But I ain’t a coward. And if anything hopefully the length of the writing itself will show appreciation for your hard work. Will it descend into madness? I mean. no more than usual. Will we learn anything? I hope not. But I'm looking forward to the journey keeping me company as I kill this beast. Last note before I dive in: as someone who also does VOD uploads to youtube, God bless you for doing this many chapters and links. My god, man. It must have taken you forever and a half. Can confirm: their live show is sick as hell, I cried a few times. But that's likely due to me being sensitive and sentimental. Also fuck yes Burn the Witch just rocks my ass so hard. Lullabies and Like Clockwork are tied for my second fav, Rated R will always be my first so nostalgia keeps it there. Stupid fun fact about how much I love Mr. Homme (cosigned hubba hubba): I thought he was so cool I tried to teach myself the little snarl he would commonly do in the early 00's. I did it so much it's still a muscle twitch my face does with a lot of my expressions whether I want it to or not. orz How... much support would you need to do one of these for earlier discography and/or desert sessions but especially desert sessions? Please. I didn't know the context for this era of QOTSA, and it's overwhelming. But I'm grateful. Homme's lyrics always hit me in a way that made more sense than a lot of other lyricists and knowing this extra layer is just. Damn. He always puts a lot of complicated emotions into words I can use and contextualize for my own expression. But my heart hurts for us both, and thankful he had this art to make sense of his own pain. And that he seems to be doing much better now. But Crashing being more hopeful sounding than passing would be my read. Its a clinging to not being passing even at great destruction. Hopeful but so painful. Also vam-pyre feels intentional; (my reading here) life is a bonfire that dies down, a pyre that leaves ashes and the one standing in front of it, in it, cold. Loveless. Wondering what could be gotten right about such a blaze, a thing uncontrollable but necessary; warmth (or sensation of it) all consuming. Vampire all consuming. I'm not organizing this further than a blurb of text per album bc I am working on school stuff. Please go watch the I had a tail music vid animation if you haven't yet for whatever reason. It feels like it makes a lot of sense of the feelings. But damn it hurts, man. (God Josh, thanks for existing and making art) Laui getting on your ass about typos playfully makes me giggle every time. Fuck I want to drink up my god is the sun and video. It would eat me alive but it'd be fine but Josh would be pissed so I'll enjoy it from a safe distance and learn from it.

Damn. We couldn't see that one coming. I hope Josh would stomp Gaiman knowing what we know now. I always forget this song until the guitar riff hits. "Kalopsia: The delusion of things being more beautiful than they are." the way the song *trickles* and wafts down while trying to unsuccessfully pick itself up? Visceral feeling of that experience. Oh good. I was going to replay it on my own after Laui's very good comment anyways. Really happy for you, Laui's, and Shnu's thoughts on this music. Fuck, I knew this one would wreck me. What… um. Here, least detail or heavy way to say it. This song from its start to its end is my ex marriage. It’s the sparknotes timeline. So I will move on because I don’t give a shit about it now anyhow (and all the layers that sentence implies). I listened to it again before focusing on work for a bit and pausing in the listening session. I’m good. (I’m always good.) Art heals. Also have you heard the QOTSA cover of yellow brick road? (speaking of Elton john) Good good shit. Right where were we, this school stuff is a slog, I need my brain active to get through it. This video adds so much context and relevancy. Sometimes you live til you die and sometimes you find better ways to live fully - but on that cheeky note, a thought came to mind. Compare this to In The Fade/Feel Good Hit of the Summer for an audio and narrative gut punch. Its important to remember the humor in Josh’s work hell yeah. Stop sounding cute while you sing QOTSA. Anyways. Back to the hard shit. This… song was something I went through in August. What he doesn’t say outright, but I heard resonating in the song and while watching the music video was the thought I think we both had “if I went while I was out, I’d never know or feel it”. It’s not the point, but it’s the undercurrent to a lot of what you think about during recovery. If I’m to be bold enough to assert a similar temporary mindset to Mr. Homme during those moments for ourselves. We both woke up, and hit the ground. Our paths and mentalities are strikingly different from there, and I was lucky to be surrounded by love immediately after getting back to the safety of home (love of people was my ‘anything’, I had it before but god the appreciation I have for it now is unmatched). But still… a heart shaped hole where the hope runs out. Yeah. The one that woke up is never the same no matter what you do. Hey, I hope y’all never get the context to unravel this one. But if you ever do. It’ll be ok. Just remember love and forgive whatever is gone. What else can be said for the ending of this beautiful, tragic work but… “tears of pleasure, tears of pain, they trickle down your face the same” (“He kept working” “Why?” Dude if I could put it to words I’d be a millionaire.) Jesus Ive never seen the trailer before I’m dying and needed the laugh hahahaha Fuck Joshua’s a handsome one.

Ok this album is mostly new to me. So I’ll have less to say I think and I’m buckling in. There’s a giant painting of Iggy Pop in the Brooklyn Art Museum and damn, that painting holds no punches on the question of “how the fuck is this guy still alive?” And its hung up high so Iggy is just larger than life and looming over you like a decrepit rock angel. Worth seeing. I fucking love The Way You Used to Do so much. This video is so fun and stupid (positive so positive) too. Also also - I can’t recall enough off the top of my head, but are they referencing a bunch of old QOTSA music videos alongside old time imagery? Maybe I’m hoping too much for that to be a layer. But yeah lets get into what its clearly referencing, Msrs Rene and Laui. (also why do I fucking love the phrase “my heart’s a ding a ling”) Fuck yeah agreed, if I ever have kids I want them to be monsters too hahaha. Good luck to us both. And yeah agreed on all the things y’all are bringing up. This song is full of potent lines that, to me, are tasty as fuck. There’s more moments of “silence” in the vocals to this album than they’ve had for a while. This song is such a villain taunting song. But I love it because its more than that. I dunno, it feels like the prickly armor of someone doing the exploration you two comment on after going through *SOME SHIT*. The gold… Yeah I think I get what it means. ok bear with me: The way it’s being talked about reminds me of the myths that are infamous out here in the Americas of lost cities of gold, there’s a couple famous American tales of hidden gold too. They all have the same in common: the gold is sought after feverishly (its mine, all mine a common cartoon phrase for cartoons depicting those tales or parables of them) it’s the ultimate life changing riches yeah? But it doesn’t exist. It never does. It’s the doom of all who seek it. Tears of gold, the dream you lost it all for you gave it all up for streaming down your face as it leeches out from you, defeated. Falling to your knees. The rock and roll life, the rush, the thrill - that was Joshua’s El Dorado. Was. Reconciling that with continuing your story once the myth ends would bring anyone to their knees. Fortress. I don’t want to talk about this one. I love it but my face is wet. Listening break. Holy shit what a time to see this for the first time. I really want to see how he performs this one live. But I was commenting about his love songs on the older albums the other day on stream and this is just… a new man. His love runs deeper and farther (father, farther father… shhh I’m cooking) (Maybe broken, maybe glued back together with gold: kintsugi - theres an amount of distance I want to respectfully keep from the man despite his open heart in this music) Weird to feel proud of someone I’ll never know, but here we are.

Was this the recording of The Evil Has Landed you and Laui meant? It might not have been because I think villains was out by then th-cam.com/video/xEIoC_W9DWQ/w-d-xo.html. But this was specifically the show and night I was at (because I remember this exact speech about Josh’s dad being there, its sweet, but then also like this speech he gives is excellent explanation about the song). Josh you’re not allowed to say near-life experience but also maybe the most allowed. Also agreed that sometimes he definitely was singing “here we cum”. The songs are really distinct from one another but I wonder if that was a subconscious influence? Both hit the same depths of reflection at mortality even though the subjects of the inspiration of the thought process are different. (For Anthony it was the loss of a close friend; here Joshua is thinking of his family). Similarly to Fortress, I don’t want to speak too much on this one. I just want to hug it close like my axolotl and dry my tears on it. I didn’t know about any of the 2019 stuff; and hypothesizing from my limited experience with family law? The forgery alone wouldn’t do that strict a stay away and complete loss of custody. Especially when it’s the mom. So my heart goes to the kids. And losing so many friends right after… damn. I get it. Even losing one suddenly can fuck you up for so long. I’m so glad his band was there for him. Also the loss of Anthony Bourdain fucked up the culinary world and far beyond. His taking of his life was… just so much. We all looked up to him. He was so loved. And it wasn’t… I mean I know well it doesn’t matter sometimes. But you know what? Remember him as the bright flame he should be remembered as. But I’m no coward, as previously stated. Sometimes you hear lyrics that just strip you raw to bone and you just gotta deal and appreciate the craft. Also yay I guess I’ve done a bunch of healing too. Also holy shit the instances of hole being obscene but critical to the thesis of this song. He’s legend in terms of lyrics. (Jihad means strife/struggle; despite popular media twistings of it). Paper machete, is 2:00 - 2:27 a leitmotif of Little Sister? Y’all did brilliant at highlighting the punch of all these lyrics. Fucking love Joshua. Actually, I’m rescinding my love of “Love the way you used to do” its still a bop and a half but… Oh man hindsight. QOTSA music videos are something else, man. Getting less scared of this journey, and just admiring how much Josh can work through this stuff now. Working through isn’t a magic bullet, but it is figuring out how to get back to Earth. (Just rewatched the Anthony Bourdain desert sessions ep of no reservations and feeling sentimental af) This album is oddly validating so far of some of the shit I’ve gone through and come out the other side of. I dunno, its 8 am. I’ve written like 25 pages of legal analysis. I can be kind of selfish. And want to buy Joshua a beer to enjoy in solidarity silence. “I’ll see you inhale/in hell.” Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck I’m just whispering praises under my breath while slamming out coursework. 9 tasks left, about 90 minutes of vod left, but taking breaks when my brain needs a little silence to crack through. Silence is doable because my brain is buzzing about QOTSA though.

I slept, I’m done with school things, I’m now actually ready for the last half of times new roman and wondering about y’alls theories on the title. Ok right away though? This imagery invokes something very potent and I’m curious if its intentional (bc I think Joshua knows at least street Spanish?). In Spanish ‘poner cuernos’ is basically saying cuckolding, especially in a marriage context. You warn young teens in love where they shouldn’t be to not ‘poner cuernos’ on someone or lead them to cheating - I mention this because cuerno in Spanish is horn. And this is a very very cuckholded steer man creature and given all the other temporal biographical contexts? I’m curious if its coincidence or not. So… maybe not completely stepping away from anger if it’s intentional. I think the sad thing about Joshua is that he’s used to being parading around as the spectacle asshole rockstar, but I don’t think y’all would disagree with the notion that he seems like a pretty stand up guy. The kind things and noble things he does are the much harder to find stories, but they very much exist. (Honestly, I don’t think I would hold him as my fav for 20 years if he was anything less than a big heart and soul driven artist. I don’t like mean people outside of fiction.) I just want to live in this music video. Its beautiful. Also the look he sports here is so *potent*. Like sure, he’s hot, but it’s such a look that invokes gut reactions of “paternal” “lordly”. Which with the Seventh Seal and Fritz Lang aesthetics is a heady brew. “I’m a vulture so I hear your goodbyes” is… MMM. Putting that on my potential tattoo list. Very much to your point, Rene. “Keep Living” and the different ways those two words evolve over time are pretty much a central thesis to QOTSA isn’t it? Especially with these three records. Carnevoyeur, if I may, he has a lot of patient scavenger and observer imagery in this, so I think the play on words is him painting a perspective that’s a carnivore, ready to eat life but now in a stance of observer. The thirst is still there, but the method and the heart behind it is wildly different. As y’all mention, there’s more thought to legacy - which is a philosophy that lends itself more to a vulture than a lion. If that makes sense? Y’all time this stuff so well and made it super easy to follow along even though I have to play the audio in a second tab. Good job. Also, thank you. I’m gonna say thanks more. Deal with it. There’s a beautiful art piece to be made from the lamb/sheep imagery QOTSA paints over the decades (I’ll add it to my queue, hope you enjoy watching it in the future). (Also… how… how do you have this much appreciation for Joshua’s style of lyrics but say that you don’t like poetry? I’m gonna find you poetry you dig.) This might be a reach, but the standard font for legal briefs, motions, court filings in the US is Time New Roman. I almost wonder if this song is talking about the trauma of all that endless paperwork that would have dissected all his life, love, and dreams in 12 pt Times New Roman. Demanding more and more from him with seemingly no end. The law is cruel and heartless, that’s why it needs people like me and the mentors I look up to most to shield as much of the blow as we all can. I can see why Laui likes this one best, it’s really up there for me too. I kind of wonder if it’ll be my fav after listening to the album 2-3 more times. He figured it out. I’m glad Joshua figured it out. Its SO Hommeeee. Damn QOTSA is playing in Boston in June. I’m thinking about it. It would be an easy journey and fun trip. This was a wonderful way to finally digest the last three albums. My brain is buzzing. I’m kicking my feet. I was going to say “I wrote too much” but no. No. No. Fuck that noise. I’m passionate as shit about this band, I’m listening to people that I admire the shit out of be passionate about this band. If I didn’t have a million things to say I’d be boring and dead. Make it with chu is the best fuck song ye. But also I mentioned it before and Lullabies is always extremely close 2nd fav for me behind Rated R. I didn’t know it was missed by a lot of folks. Its so fucking good and tries so many things. (I mean I did a promo singing of This Lullabye before so I don’t think I have to convince anyone I love it lmao).
