I built a Budget Bikepacking Setup
Hey guys!
This is something I wanted to do for quite a while and it has taken me a while to actually put this video together! As many of you already know from the channel, I love camping, hiking, biking etc... and I wanted to put together a quick, easy and budget friendly setup that could allow me to take some bikepacking trips when I have the time. I didn't want to sink alot of money into this or alter my bike/bikes in any way for the setup and I wanted this to be all easily and quickly installed and removed from any bike.
So here is my setup!

If you're mountain biking in the Seattle area, here is a route I think you'll love. It has a mix of tech, flow and steeps. Set on Tiger Moutain, it is very easy to navigate and only a quick drive (traffic dependent) from Seattle. Have an awesome day and catch you on the trails! Cheers! Are Electric Mountain Bikes worth it?
มุมมอง 1954 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ever the debated topic of recent times... people love Electric Mountain Bikes and people hate them. My feelings are in the middle. They definitely have drawbacks in terms of initial cost, cost of ownership and downhill ride quality but they also have some huge benefits including accessibility to the sport, accessibility to further trails and the ability to take quick rides when you have limited...

I was pretty stoked to check this one out and very impressed at the build and quality as well as the overall performance of this bike. For a budget Electric Mountain Bike it performs incredibly well on streets and singletrack making it a great option if you need to pick up a commuter, but you'd also like to SHRED some singletrack! Is this a sponsored review?
Nope not a sponsored review 👍
rocky mountain growler is a very good choice and they are bankrupt, i am pretty sure that they are for sale. Good bang for your buck
Awesome. Well done and well said. What rain kit is suggested? Olollie is out there too. Bit further.
Thanks so much! I just wear my usual mtb pants (Andean Trails) and a rain jacket. If it’s really wet I put on some water proof hiking pants. 100% Brisker Gloves are great for cold weather riding. Olallie is a fun trip but I don’t love descending two way traffic trails. I hear in the next few years evergreen might add a few descending options to Olallie.
@@sasquatchmtb Awesome thanks! Did Tiger today. So beautiful there.
Awsome bike looks Awsome.
Thanks man!!
@ Yw turned a vintage mtb into a commuter put a rack fenders and semi slick tires.
Hey, do you think the upgrade from guide R to Code R is a good upgrade im seeing pairs of code R for only around £60-£90 used on ebay.
Yeah! While the Code Rs are still on the lower end of the enduro four piston brakes I think you would see a pretty solid upgrade in the stopping power from Guide R to either SRAM code R or SRAM DB8s. I recently tried DB8s and was pretty impressed for the price and they use mineral oil rather than dot fluid which some people really prefer.
Ive been looking for a bar bag so thank you!
Awesome! Good timing and glad you found my video. Ride safe brother!
Under the Biden administration $ 1500.00 isn't a budget bike....but yea, enjoy your videos brother.
I get where you're coming from for sure! ... but it's relative. Mountain biking is not a budget hobby but the bikes here are budget in relative to the average bike purchase price for many mountain bikers. I could make a video for budget mountain bikers just getting into the sport or looking for a budget of say under $500 because finding ways to keep the budget down as much as possible is an interesting problem to solve.
I just bought the Kona Big Honzo featured here. Beautiful and badass in matte midnight blue in Large. It is a knockout in person, really needs to be seen in person, a quality piece and a muscle bike. Rides awesome. Thanks for review.
Nice dude! The Big Honzo is a beast! Where do you ride?
@sasquatchmtb Ontario Canada. Rear round. Cheers.
Could you recommend something for riding in 30 degree weather, windy, but just in the neighborhood, no trails. I'm still starting out.
I have actually ridden the Andean Trails pants in 30 degree weather... they don't have much insulation but the activity kept me warm enough. My recommendation would be to add a base layer under something like the Andean Trails or a standard MTB pant (like a fleece pant or sweatpants) and you should be good and won't need to buy a pair of pants just for colder weather.
Officially subscribed!
Thanks man!
I'm so excited for mine to come, i ordered it a week ago but its on the other side of my country so its currently in transit. I think its perfect for my style of riding, mostly firetrails and commuting, I'm keen to do minor upgrades like you too, riser bar and maybe some Maxxis recon race. Im from Sydney Australia :) thanks for your review
Hey man! Thanks for watching from Sydney! Should be great for commutes and firetrails. Plenty of power and battery life for exploring. Let me know how you like it!
How did we not talk about SeaTac
SeaTac is pretty small and I’ve never ridden there personally. Tell me about it!
I should say it is pretty small to my understanding!
I just got mine and immediately upgraded the fork to the RockShox Psylo Gold which is the air spring version of the stock fork with much lower weight and full adjustability, and even came with a fender attached! My LBS got it for me for just $435 installed. Can't wait to try it out!
Awesome!!! That’s a great setup!!! Fender is also a must this time of year.
My friends who got e-bikes now have e-bikes they don’t ride! The problem was never the bike. The problem was they are just lazy and an e-bike didn’t change that once the honey moon period had passed.
I totally agree with the sentiment. It doesn't really change your overall... it's just another tool in the toolbox (albeit an expensive one that needs to be charged haha!)
I am an under bike kind of guy. It comes from 35 years of riding, at the start of mtb we learnt to let the bike dance under us and ride loose, we were the suspension. So my under bike is my pace rc627 hardtail and my over bike is a Transition Scout, which is still under bike by most peoples standards. My bikes are picked for their ability, to punch above their specs and blur genres. I will happily take either down double black diamonds or on a 50 mile xc ride. Great set of videos really enjoy them!
Thanks so much! The Transition Scout is an awesome bike. I've never gotten hands on the Pace RC627 though. It is pretty cool to have so many options out there.
I don't see why bikes that are $1,000 and above still come with coil forks That's a no-go for me I'd rather have an air fork than a dropper post
The one thing about it I'd say is that some coil forks are relatively easy to sell on the seconhand market. I have bought a bike with a Rockshox 35 coil and sold it and bought a Rockshox 35 Air Fork for almost an even trade. Ultimately I want both for sure!
I'm looking at the polygon xtrada 7 or the polygon syncline c3 probably going to go with the xtrada 7
Both good options! Looks like both are on sale on BikesOnline right now toow! bikesonline-usa.sjv.io/k0AVev
Come down south to Swan Creek and rate some of the other trails in the state.
I'd love to! Which trails or trail systems would you rate highest?
Is a rockrider 27.5"expl 50 a decent beginner mtb?
It definitely depends on what you want to do and what trails you want to ride. The Rockrider would be decent for pedaling gravel trails and relatively smooth paths, but it isn't made for more challenging singletrack. The main issue I see with it as a beginner bike is that it is not upgradeable because of its components. For example, because it does not have a tapered head tube, thru axel or disc brakes, you are not going to be able to upgrade the wheels, brakes, or fork much if at all. I guess the counter to all that is that it is relatively inexpensive so if you decide to progress and spend more money on bikes (lookout it happens easily!) then you don't have a lot of money sunk into it. Cheers!
Harmony creek in sw Washington Cowlitz county and all the trails there.
So many good trails in Washington!
Thanks for sharing! I live in bham and I’ve never made it out to tiger mt. I need to find a squad to go with. Just subbed. You have great commentary!
Hey man! thanks for subscribing and commenting. If you're ever riding in Seattle feel free to hit me up. Bellingham has so many great trails too!
I have Sram Level TLs on both my 26 and 29 cross country hardtails.Given the low price I would be tempted to give these a shot. You can adjust bite point with pad advancement procedure or using thinner bleed block(Jagwire Universal) for bleed.Pistons should only be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and not lubricated. After cleaning always noticible improvement in responsiveness.
Great insight!
brought an XC bike here last week and had a ridiculous amount of fun!
Nice!! There are so many places to get out around here. Tiger is a great place to start. 🐅
Just got mines on sale at REI. Good review, can’t wait to use it 👌🏼
Niiiice!!!!
Sandugo Philippines
They are quality shoes!
E-bikes officially allowed on tiger mountain?
nope. unless ADA or trail builder.
I believe EMBA put out a notice that class 1 emtbs are recognized.
Climb looks awfully nice on that e-bike
Come try it sometime haha! Access roads are definitely perfect for EMTB climbs
Tiger Mountain is my fav trail system! It’s a 4.5 hour drive but I get up there at least a couple times a year. Predator 🔥🔥🔥
It is a great place! Predator is pretty sick!
And no zombies!!! 🧟 😂❤ beautiful trail and area. Too bad is so screwed up otherwise
Bro there are like 2 block in downtown seattle that are bad, otherwise all good.
@@phenning67 Don’t you mean, it’s horrible everywhere here, and rains everyday! I recommend Moab, or the front range.
lol! Yes everyone stay away from Seattle! California recommended
Suck it up snowflake
@@davidfusari3515 Nope, front range is full, and all our trails are flat and suck haha. And contrary to rumors, no we didn't just open one of the best new trails in the entire country in the last 3 weeks haha.
You can’t hear the motor on mine I think maybe the microphone is making it sound louder, absolutely love this bike.
Great bike for commuting and singletrack! I don't notice the motor much while riding and I'm sure the mic probably makes it a bit more noticeable. Cheers!
Im thinking about replacing the CodeR with the Maven Silvers as i need more bite for my Santa Cruz Megatower. You try those yet, the Maven line?
I haven’t personally but I’ve had friends try mavens and they’ve been pretty impressed with the bite on the Mavens. I believe it was silvers they had as well. Let me know if you try them! I’ve definitely heard people complain about the power on the code rs
Nicely done…your channel deserves a lot more viewers, your comments are well made and you are a very good rider…is your Ramblas a M or L size? what is your height?
Super nice of you to say! Thank you! I am 6'2" and my Ramblas is an XL. I could probably fit a Large, however I'm used a longer reach and wheelbase so I went with an XL.
I Haven’t had a bicycle in 30 yrs I’m going to buy this one this weekend , I really can’t wait to get it thanks for the video.
Awesome! It's a fun bike, hope you have a great time on it!
Underrated af
Thanks!
Interesting choices. Few brands I've never heard of and have been involved in this for a long time. Surprised no pivot or especially Rocky Mountain the baddest Enduro MTB on earth.
Oh I do love Rocky! I do always try to feature more obscure brands if I can or if I am deciding between a couple. The Altitude Powerplay is sick though!
Hey man, what about the Cannondale Habit HT 1, in sale, at around 1000e?
Great looking bike actually!! It is $1,500 USD now at Jenson. Nice component package too. I am a big fan of that stainless look on the mercury colorway!
@@sasquatchmtb Ended up going with a Radon Skeen Trail 7.0 full suspension after lots of consideration :D
@@Weez2010 nice man! Interesting choice you don’t see them in the states. It looks so much like my transition spire alloy. Did you get the stainless look?
@@sasquatchmtb yessir. Got the silver one. But your transition spire is on a other level, damn nice
There’s also some trails in Renton, but would recommend bringing someone familiar with the area
Are you talking Tapeworm or some secret trails?
No Endura ?
I've never tried them myself! They look solid though. Have you worn them?
Using these brakes in a bike park is like car racing with a toyota yaris. Worst brakes ever. I have/had both r and rsc on two different bikes. Rsc are acceptable, consistent, reasonably powerful, not fading, you can in some way rely on them. The R are just crap. After one season, bleeding them every 2/3/4 rides (because after 10 hours they are even more crappy), using ceramic pads, they simply went into the trash bin. I usually sell used stuff in good conditions on ebay; i would be ashamed of selling code r to someone hoping to buy good brakes; these brakes are toys. Anyone thinking about switching to R for serious DH should just immediately change their mind. But anything else, sram rsc, trd, dominion, hope, shimano, you name it, whatever you like, not code R though
I forgot to ask you, do you know the diameter of the handlebars I should be looking for? Thanks
No worries! 35mm clamp diameter on the Ramblas stem. I've been looking at these deity bars jenson.sjv.io/LXJnG0
Bellingham MA?
I am near Bellingham, Washington (actually live close to Seattle)
Cheap shoes from walmart works just as good if not better
In my experience I totally disagree… but not wearing MTB specific shoes might work better for some!
Ebikes are for old dudes (like me)lol!
Now you can crush all the uphill KOMs 😉
This is a fantastic video! I wish it existed when I started riding.
Thanks so much man! That’s what I was trying to make! When I started I really didn’t know where to ride.
That’s dope
I want an e-bike I have a full sis trail bike and an xc bike that I’m sorta building
It’s definitely nice for me. With work and dad duty I don’t have a ton of time to get out and the e bike makes that easier!
I think in a few years e-bikes will come down in both weight and price and you'll see more and more of them out on the trails. I get the use of them for "winch and plummet" riding days but don't necessarily understand using them for rides where you're looking to get miles in. P.S - any chance you can bump up the bitrate??
Totally agree. I haven’t heard the term winch and plummet but I like it haha! Yeah bit rate is lower on this one because my computer was taking hours to export!
Gnarly, nephew!
