I have a funny mix of speakers now- but the main ones I’m using for practice at home are some Yamaha studio monitors. I have a sub I salvaged from an old installation. My plan is to buy a good amp with multiple outputs for a lot of speakers later. The downside to only having two speakers is that when multiple divisions (especially reeds) are coupled together it winds up being a bit rough. For simple practice registrations the two monitors work well though. Thanks for listening!

@@stevenwooddell You didn''t say what size the Yamaha Studio speakers were, for example, the woofer cone size or and tweeter size, which most tweeters are 1 inch. but what about the larger bottom woofer part? What size is recommended? Thanks, Terry

@@studioopinions5870 I have a pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors- they’re really not designed for this application but they work. I would recommend just trying to use what you happen to already have to get started. If you want to spend more try using between 4-8 speakers and a sub to separate the different divisions for a better overall sound.

Thanks for your kind words- I've really enjoyed having the instrument at home. I looked around a bit for the answer about the staggered keyboards- not finding one, my guess is that the design was an effort to maximize the effectiveness of an instrument with a shorter keyboard- giving more bass on one manual and more ability to play a solo line in the other. The keyboards with aligned middle C are the most common though- it just makes switching between keyboards more intuitive. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! It’s an IPad Pro using the forscore app for music pdfs. (I recommend turboscan for making PDFs because of how well it handles different lighting situations) I use the Airturn pedal- if I’m playing piano I can turn pages myself- on organ I need someone else to turn. Because that’s a first generation iPad I haven’t gotten to play with ForScore’s new facial recognition features for page turning. Hope that helps!

Thanks for listening! I loaded shorter reverb lengths on the samples (not completely dry) The original full length samples were too much when added to the natural acoustics of the church. I recorded a direct output, then I think I added back some reverb in the editing (it’s been a few weeks now)

I’ve really enjoyed being able to have samples like that at home! How you set up a Hauptwerk system is really up to what you’re trying to accomplish. There are some good a la carte midi keyboard and pedalboard options. If you can get an old but midi capable organ it’s also possible just to run your sound through your laptop. I did add some reverb to bring back some of the resonance that was lost since the recording was done with a direct feed from the organ. Great thought! It is fun to imagine what he would have done with a broader tonal palette at his disposal. At least it’s possible to play his music with plenty of color and clarity at home. Would have been fun to see what Bach would have done with a theater organ.

It's a first generation 12.9" iPad pro. I tried a smaller iPad at first but reading open score for choirs and reading a dense organ score was a nightmare (it was especially hard to tell which line the accidentals were on) You can get them refurbished now for a more reasonable price

Thanks so much! I got these from an organ builder, so I'm not sure where they sourced their keyboards. That said, the closest ones in appearance I can find are on this site: www.midiworks.ca/ They seem to have a custom ordering process that would give you a lot of options. (I haven't used them before, so I can't vouch for the quality, just seems like the right idea) If you do try them out, please let me know how they are. Good luck with your project!

Manuals: In Hauptwerk’s auto detect settings there is an option to play multiple manuals on the same keyboard (you can map everything to one keyboard if you have to) depending on your sample set you might just be able to treat your fourth manual as a floating keyboard. When you are using the assignment settings I’m pretty sure it just asks you to confirm that you want to use (III and IV) on the same keyboard. The only time you really need to know your MIDI channel is if you are working with the keyboards in a DAW. The output is pretty flexible- Hauptwerk takes a look at the Interface or computer you are using and will give you those outputs as an option (as simple as L and R out- and you could daisy chain your sub) or it will offer the aux outputs from your interface I’m grateful they thought that through carefully. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the encouragement! It’s funny how universal the bad practice organ experience was (is) We didn’t have any Hammonds- but we did have a lot of 8’ flutes sitting in front of keyboards that had seen a much better day.

I love having the possibility of updating an older console with new samples! I've used Hauptwerk through an older Johannus organ that had audio inputs into it. The trick is bypassing the actual stops (you might need to work exclusively from pistons) I'd love to hear how things go if you wind up trying to use Hauptwerk for services.

Church has more organ than they need already. Any Haupwerk organ I ever build would be at home, and starting with an old 3-manual console and a tower computer that I'll build myself (I have built two). Old organs I see on ebay are overpriced.
