Wipes in Commander have become too predictable, so often instead of wipe I stock up on anti-wipe. TefPro, Flawless Maneuver, Heroic Intervention, Flare of Fortitude, Unbreakable Formation, Akroma's Will, And They Shall Know No Fear, Join Shields, Boromir, Dauntless Escort, Selfless Spirit, and more. If I can weather a wipe I can often get a massive advantage or win on my next turn.

Remember going to a LGS about 10 years ago with a buddy who wasn't into Commander at the time, and saw they had Cuclonic Rift in the $4 rare bin. I bought 6 of them on the spot, and my friend looked at me like I was nuts.

I've found that we live in a world now where we are blessed with enough board wipes that they're not only a crucial part of stopping opponents but have the ability to leave you streaks ahead. Take the new Niko Light of Hope and Starfall invocation, wipe the board and get two more shard tokens for your trouble. It leaves you so stupidly far ahead. Or battle of the bywater in token decks. The list is really quite endless now, there's little reason now to do a symmetrical wipe where your board is just as damaged as the opponents, unless you sandbag it like you mentioned

Oh, boy, Wipes is one of my favorite topics for discussion. I'm in the believe that an insanely amount of people have 0 idea of what is an actual wipe, when to wipe, WHY to wipe, and why it is not just "dragging the game along". If you wipe to remove engines and threats at the cost of a single card, with the capability to exploit a pressure-free environment faster than your opponents, then a wipe is basically card advantage + set up. Wipes are not artificially lengthening a game. Self defense shouldn't a be crime, I'm not a sinner for not wanting to die. But I will say to those who say it, most people using a wipe don't know when or why to wipe. You usually want to wipe when you A.) Know that some of your opponents have exposed themselves (as in, played a bunch of synergy/value engines at the same time instead of just relying on one), or B.) You have some way to exploit the wipe (as in, mass reanimation spells or you just took 2 turns off before starting to develop your board, and in order to not lose everything in an equalized wipe from an enemy you decide to strip the table clean of 3 boardstates). Now onto the choices: I heavily prefer any 5cmc boardwipe that says "sacrifice, shuffle/tuck to the bottom, exile, -X/-X". I haven't ever casted a Farewell, before people start calling me a terrorist, I'm just weary of Heroic Intervention and creatures that sacs themselves to make the team indestructible. Paying less to wipe very rarely translates into rebuilding. If you had the wipe some turns prior, you had the opportunity to play around it; and if you just found it when you most needed it, then silly goose you don't need to be cheap around mana. Most commanders cost 4 to 7 to recast, so even if you paid 2 for a Vanquish the Horde if you're not ahead on mana, you may as well not be casting your commander on your turn anyways. But having to pay 7 to ignore parity or to draw 7+ cards is absurd, bc at that stage of the game when you DO have the mana, you're dying; and since you paid 7+ mana you will NOT be protecting yourself during that same turn... Unless you were ahead of the others, and then why would you have wrathed ya silly goose? Since I'm primarily a white player, I'll list you some of my favorites: * Stick Together if your commander is any of the Party types. * Single Combat if you don't need to be casting a lot of creatures. * Promise of Loyalty if you know your group tends to have combat relevant creatures (like big flyers). * The Eternal Wanderer if your commander has an ETB or you have some blink/planeswalker/legendary synergies (I prefer this to Ligma's Ruinous Blast since there will be a lot of my permanents that won't be legendary that I don't want blasted away). * By Invitation Only is ABSURD in token decks, since you have just choose 6, wipe everyone's board whilst you just lost 1 guy and 5 tokens. * Winds of Abandon is devastating on turn 6 and onwards, since even if they end up ramping like 10 basics spending 0 mana and cards, the decks that ACTUALLY can afford to run that amount of basics do not have explossive draw (and who runs X draw spells in 2024 anyways?). Back on topic, what I wanted to portray is: When you cast a wipe and noone is running a counterspell, you WANT that thing to actually WIPE the table. If an opponent has a way to make a creature indestructible, that will be the most relevant creature you actually wanted gone. These cards make sure most of those cases won't come to pass, and some will leave you some benefit whilst also not being 8 mana to "break parity". I understand if someone is playing gruul they wouldn't have access to all of this. My condolescenses, I lack the education and expertise in the unga bunga department of arcane arts to better guide you.

Hey brother, I see what you’re doing. You’re out here, seeing snail-looking types spitting their takes about general Commander principles. You see that these videos are somewhat immune to changing times for views due to their attachment to timeless principles. That’s a great thought, brother. But you already got a mutant power like the X-men, brother, and it’s your ability to talk about cards/situations in the game in a hilarious yet thoughtful way. This doesn’t quite feel like your jam, even though I love your content.

Recently subbed and have been loving the content brother, you had a lot of great suggestions and good mindset for boardwipes, it was awesome to see all the different cards too. For me I add the normal amount for the deck I'm making, and either add 1 more or have at least 3 only for the fact that I expect at least one of the wipes I draw (if I even draw it lol) will get the ol' T-Pro or clever concealment treatment. Im sure others said it but the audio is off balance, and I found it personally hard to read the text at the end, but it could just be me. Keep on brother, your doing the lords work.

I got a niv mizzet reborn deck. Planeswalkers and 25 board wipes. Hallowed burial is one my favorites

I have different levels of board wipes for different decks. My Ghalta primal hunger deck can only wipe artifacts and enactments, but it's a creature deck that goes infinite. My favorite deck, Galea Kindler of Hope runs two assymetric board wipes. My avacyn Angel of Hope deck runs over thirty of them, all focused on the word destroy, and some of them are repeatable

I think my Marneus Calgar has 7 or 8 board wipes in the deck right now. It's pretty good at rebuilding after a wipe so I've built it into the plan of the deck, which is to deploy non creature permanents with gusto while people are building their creatures, then board wipe followed by a flood of tokens that get extra value from enchants/artifacts. Normally my rebuilt board is the best at the table.

I prefer bidet style spot removal 😉

Great closing points as well! I hate when people board wipe out of spite or when only one person has stuff on the board. If it's not helping you win, it's just paving the way for an opponents victory and being a nuisance.

How appropriate that I was actually wiping for part of the video. You've gotta wipe. Sometimes you need a wet wipe (some call em cleansing wipes, some call em Cyclonic Rifts). Sometimes you really need to light a match as you wipe... Of course fire does damage. So don't play with matches around your friends, but do pull out Chain Reaction when there's a lot of enemies to take care of. In all seriousness, great video! You've gotta wipe. More often in real life than in the game, but still, sometimes the game just stinks and needs a good wipe
