Katherine's decision to tell this story opposed to any other was very intentional, her gaze directly at Almasy. You know he was imagining gazing at Katherine without her clothes and that was exactly what Katherine wanted.

If their was an actual “antagonist”in this film it would be Katherine all the way . After just getting married to Geoffrey literally days before she clearly was already looking at Almasty . She came on to Almasty despite multiple refusals . She showed up at his house and then started hitting him like it was his fault right before gett plowed out by him . She continued to get railed by Almasty until he fell deeply in love then she breaks off the affair out of “fear of Geoffrey finding out”only to be apparently about to begin another affair as pointed out here. Katherine was a narcissist to the core . She loved the attention and adoration of men and she used them for her needs . Geoffrey for his provisioning and Almasty to stimulate her primal desires only to discard both when someone better came along .Almasty and Geoffrey were two good honorable men who simply made the mistake of falling for wrong woman .

Man, István Szabó is such a phenomenal filmmaker, and this might just be his greatest artistic achievement alongside "Hanussen". It saddens me that his talent is not more widely recognised. And the cast! So many of my favourite [mostly-]British thespians all in the same movie! Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Deborah Unger, John Neville, Trevor Peacock, Rosemary Harris, William Hurt and the _ludicrously_ underrated and underutilized James Frain are all utterly magnificent.

See, this scene, for me, sort of took me out of the story. These two had perfect chemistry, and their characters were dubious to say the least, so having a torrid affair is well within the realm of possibilities. But this scene was clearly written by a man. His possessiveness over her has gone from sexy to dangerous, and no woman of her sensibilities would be charmed by that. She was intelligent and self possessed, and knew her own value. When I first watched this, for a moment I was happily surprised they were going to go down this seldomly explored path of what it looks like when a man obsesses over a woman, and the mistake she realized she had made by cheating. If we had gotten a sort of reverse Fatal Attractions, it would have been a fascinating development and one that would have made Almasy’s reflections later in the movie much more thought provoking. But instead, she’s somehow turned on by his stalking and avarice, and we’re treated to a run of the mill lust story that has no bearing in the reality of the human condition.

This story was that of my husband's Hungarian family. After three such generations, they came to Australia, with all the other Hungarian Jews, poured themselves into building Sydney and still, have no idea if they are coming or going as Jews.
