Biking the WV Route 9 Bike Path - Ranson, West Virginia (GoPro HERO9)
I used the GoPro HERO 9 Black's TimeWarp 3.0 feature to capture a recent bike ride on the WV Route 9 Bike Path in Ranson, West Virginia. This is a paved 10.5 mile trail that runs from Ranson to the outskirts of Martinsburg, West Virginia.
To start my ride, I parked at the dedicated trail parking lot in Ranson. There is also a parking lot at the other end of the trail in Martinsburg (as well as a couple other small lots in between). Be aware, the trail parallels Route 9 for pretty much the entire 10.5 miles - some portions of the trail are closer to Route 9 than others, but you will see cars / traffic the whole time (there were no points on the trail where I felt unsafe due to the traffic). The trail also has a decent amount of rolling hills - it is by no means a "flat" trail, but there isn't anything too crazy elevation wise either.
I did this trail as an out and back ride and it came out to around 21 total miles for me. I went on a Friday and only saw a handful of people on the trail.

    I just succeeded in loading my first C12 magazine (which is what’s shown in the video). I had Ilford HP5 Plus B&W negative film instead. As for the symbols before the “1” appears in the rear window on the HP5 Plus first there seems to be 2 horizontal arrows (if viewed as the magazine is held in the video) and then a succession of pairs of dotted circles in increasing diameter until a pair of “1”:s. At that point I followed your instructions to the letter.

    Cool video. It like that a lot of it is paved. The parts of the trail that I would not like are where you have to ride near cars. It helps if pedestrians don't block the trail as well. Thanks for posting.

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it - yes, I agree / feel the same way. I am a fan of the sections that are paved and separated from road traffic. Luckily the segments on this trail where you are close to cars / have to bike on the road is minimal, but it would be great if they were able to make it 100% contained to a biking trail.

    I noticed you removed the film with the system in red. I just cocked the camera again after finishing a roll. Should I fire the shutter again before removing the film or does it not matter?

    • @cjones5vt
      @cjones5vt หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and for the question - good observation! After your last shot, it shouldn’t matter either way. After you advance once past your last shot, the shutter release button gets disabled on the camera (you won’t be able to press it again) and the counter on the back will go blank. As long as you put your dark slide back into the back before removing it you will be fine (which you’ll have to put the dark slide in to get the back off anyways).

    Hey, Colin! Thanks for the video! We're moving to NoVa (close to the Mt. Vernon Trail) and I'm trying to plan a safe commute to the area around the Washington National Cathedral (Wisconsin Ave NW). I'm having a difficult time mapping a good route and I'd love your help. It looks like the easiest spot for me to pick up Mt. Vernon is by the entrance around Madison St & Fairfax. Thank you!

    • @cjones5vt
      @cjones5vt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is awesome - welcome to the area! I am assuming you are referring to the Madison and N Fairfax St in Old Town Alexandria area? If so, yes, you can hop on the Mt. Vernon trail right there by Oronoco Bay Park. Once you are on, you just head north and it will take you all the way up to Rosslyn where you can cross the bridge into Georgetown (up until this point you will be on a dedicated biking/walking trail the whole time - no traffic!). I personally haven’t biked up to the Cathedral before, but I am pretty sure it will require some biking on the road once you get to Georgetown to get there. If you wanted slightly more time off the road, you could go My Vernon trail, cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge (towards the Lincoln Memorial), and then hop on the Rock Creek trail (just hang a left once you cross the bridge and keep going north). You’d need to hop off the Rock Creek trail once you get to Shoreham Dr NW to cut NW to the Cathedral. I hope that helps and have fun biking in the area! Lots of trails to choose from!!

    Good shot of the trail. Unfortunately, the beauty of the hike is the stream that is beside much of that trail that is not seen often in this video. This beauty of this trail rivals any in the state, and must be appreciated in person. It might be a good thing that this trail is so remote as to discourage large crowds that would spoil the experience.

    Would a road bike or gravel bike be better suited for the trail? Awesome video!

    • @cjones5vt
      @cjones5vt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you would do just fine with a road bike on this section - there were some gravel spots, but a majority of this specific section is paved and I think if you just paced yourself for the gravel segments you would be just fine (the gravel sections for the most part were finely crushed gravel so not many large chunks or anything like that). I road the trail on a Trek Checkpoint with gravel tires, but that is my only bike option...if you have multiple bikes to choose from, I'd say to just ride the gravel one the first time to be conservative (but if a road bike is your only option, I still think you'd be fine)

      The trail end-to-end is 14 miles; however, if you are doing the whole thing as an out-and-back ride it comes out to 28 miles. The trail starts in Falmouth and ends in Columbia.

    • @distler37
      @distler37 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @cjones5vt
      @cjones5vt 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Will you be driving yourself? Or will someone pick you up? If you start in Falmouth it is about 14 miles to Columbia (I.e. the whole trail). To do that though, you’d need someone to drop you off in Falmouth and then pick you up in Columbia. If you are driving yourself, you will just have to park in Columbia and ride 7 miles out on the trail and then 7 miles back to Columbia. 7 miles out from Columbia gets you to about where East Donegal Township Riverfront Park is.

    • @distler37
      @distler37 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @cjones5vt I would most likely drive myself. I plan on biking so I can probably make it round trip. I'm guessing Falmouth to Columbia is downhill? Or is most of the trail flat

    • @cjones5vt
      @cjones5vt 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you are correct. Falmouth to Columbia is slightly downhill - only a few hundred feet of elevation change over the length of the trail so it is effectively flat. Falmouth to Columbia and back (or vice versa) will come out to ~28 miles total.

    Helpful video for someone looking to load a Rollei 35 for the first time. One thing I would’ve pointed out is to make sure the film is loaded and advancing properly after loading by watching the center of the rewind crank. If loaded properly it should turn as you advance the lever just as confirmation you’re loaded correctly for a frame or two. Good habit with any manual film camera. Thanks again.

    Definitely gonna try this out. Just moved here and getting a bike this spring. Looks like a nice ride.

      That is great! You will love it - there are dedicated trails in Rock Creek that run up to the zoo and beyond you can access any day of the week, but I definitely recommend going on Saturday or Sunday too because they close down sections of Beach Drive to cars so you can bike uninterrupted on the road without cars too!

    This is very clear! Thank you! I’m also wondering what clips you have to connect the peak design anchors?

      Also curious about the peak design integration

      Hi! Yes, I have a peak design tripod mount on the bottom that has worked pretty well. Just make sure if you put one on to tighten it down very well (the Hasselblad is so heavy that if it is loose it can come undone easy if things get off balance...shouldn't be an issue if you just make sure it is really tight). The little plastic beads on the side are also for a peak design sling ("Peak Design Slide Camera Strap")...to be honest, I haven't used the sling much. Normally when I shoot with the Hasselblad I either have it mounted to the tripod that I am carrying around or just have it in a small sling back for quick access with a basic wrist strap on it. The little metal things I attached to the lugs for the peak design beads I just got on Amazon and they work well (just search "Hasselblad Strap Lugs").

    I see this video just for curiosity, and i view is a PERFECT explanation of how to put and remove the 120 roll, i have exactly this camera and enjoy to much taking pictures with this piece of technology, just to think a little bit on this the camera does not have a single battery and works perfectly and you also get incredible images

    I have been using these little jewels for over 50 years and I find it easier for me to hook the film leader first, advance, fire, advance, close the pressure plate and then drop the cassette in place. Very comprehensive review!

    Thanks! I never had a camera like this where the back slides down in order to load film. Helped cleared up the steps for me!

    I should've watched this before I loaded my film on my own, because I got the first 6 frames empty when I developed my film lol 😅 I almost freaked out pulling that roll from the canister, oh well. Thanks for the helpful video!
