Actually, your mom's right. It was created as a parting phrase and instead of saying have a good day or have a good afternoon, the one is a word that's substituted for whatever you want it to be. If it's your birthday then have a good one. If you're having a bath then have a good one. If you're having a bath then have a good bath... breakfast or whatever that you want it to mean. Whatever you're planning on doing, make it a good one.

A few years ago, the MCU people were having a movie marketing launch at the Disney of Shanghai. A Hong Kong celebrity was doing a segment to introduce the actors. He was trying to say some nice things about MCU movies but could not remember the titles. He used the word " Whatever" and laughed it off. I was actually quite shocked.
