Waking up in my Home Fjord

The little speck under the clouds is where my great grandmother, Thea Marie (Gudvangen/Nedberge) Nykriem was born. The video was taken from the dock in Underdal, Norway. I couldn't hike up to the home farm because the rains were so heavy all Summer and the only way up is a foot path or a helicopter. The paths were too dangerous and helicopters are too noisy.

Linn-Janette and the bukke born out of season. What a lovely little goat! There is a 4,000 year old un-broken tradition of making goat milk cheese in this valley. I am so proud to have relatives still keeping this tradition!

So the Kjerringa med Staven led me to the Voluspa, the prophecy of the Volva verses 1, 2, 19 20, 22 with chorus and music written by me. It is an environmentally driven arrangement which means that the room, the people in the room, the weather etc. all affect how this song will be performed. No two performances are alike. The energy of the moment drives the performance.

Latvian song for calling the goddesses Mara and Laima to the pirtz (sauna) for the birthing. I learned it from Karin who learned it from Natalie who learned it from Zinta - I think...and Ilse helped me with translations.

I went looking for evidence of the volva ( the staff carrying woman) in my cultural folk material. This was the first song I came upon. It describes the staff carrying woman very well! I arranged it with a call and response component.

    In 2011 Mother and I were visiting our cousin Joren Merete who moved from Undredal. She thought I might like to see this historically powerful place, given my interest in our deepest roots. Little any of us know that this was the place of a lost grandmother to our mitochondrial line. We easily trace our mitochondrial lineage in the Aurlandsfjord Bygdebok - Me to my mother to hers, Myrtle, to Thea who was baptized at Bakke, to Oline who was born on Nedbergo, to Turid, then Ingeborg, Brita, and Ingeborg 2. Finally the line ended with Synneve whose sister Siri/Sigrid (who helped make other lines of my lineage in Naeroyfjord and etc.). But who was Synneve's mother? I found a few threads from the sisters on ancestry.com. I picked them up and brought them to Undredal where a cousin had other Bygdebok. We found the next two mothers there. They were from this very area. Ingeborg 3, mother of Sigri and Synneve, born in 1666 - And I am born in 1966. My 300 year grandmother touched these stones. And her mother was Martha Nornesættr...the M name for my grandma Myrtle in öorlog-spå. :)

    True I worked my butt off from 2006 - 2016. Wow. That's what happens when the community supports the work. Some of this footage was shot in 2009 for Season One of #AltforNorge. Bjønndansen ein Rituel fra Trysil I learned from Mads Bøhle in 2011 whom I met while filming in 2009 at Rudigard. I am so grateful to the many teachers, collaborators, and friends who have nurtured me in this wonderful path! CD is available on Karitauring.com by the way. And Drew Miller will gladly ship one to you! :) Kari

    This is my "old" youtube page. I can't remember how to get back in there. Anyhow, ten years ago I first learned all these dance names and rhythms. I mis-spoke when I said that Pols meant pulse. It actually comes from Polish. This style of 3/4 dance came up into Norway and Sweden through the "polish dance polka." Still, when they get to Roros, Norway (which is one of the dances I was trying to do in the first video with my good friend Tamara Rogers), it does remind one of the human heart's pulse...a lub dub if you will. I am STILL learning how to do this dance that comes from North West of Trondheim where my cousins live. And I love singing this style of pols, Roros pols, with my friends, the Nordivas. :)

      In Latvian tradition, a staff with jingles is called a Velna Bungas (devil drum). Velna and Ragana were the god and goddess of the underworld. Then Velna became wizard and Ragana a witch. Then Ragana dropped out and Velna became devil...alas, so it goes with the old gods. :)

    Wow - almost 10 years ago! A great group to perform with, Karin Odell stav and vocals, Drew Miller on Dulcimer, Andrea Sullivan on the Harp, David Stenshoel on fiddle and seljefløyte - at the @BryantLakeBowlTheater - and cut ins of spinning at David de Young's old Minneapolis House!

    Also sobering - the photos of Tamara Rogers, Karin Odell, Robin Reyburn and I doing stav and dance in front of Ingebretsens on Lake Street were taken on August 1, 2007 by David de Young. It was the day that the I35W Bridge collapsed. We were singing and dancing and staving for strength and love to the victims of the disaster 10 years ago. It was the book release of my first work, The Runes: A Human Journey. We released the second work 10 years later.

    Wow... I've heard that her Norwegian accent was funny before but as a Swede I did not grasp the full extent of it. This, however, a Swedish song and the accent here is hilarious :)

    • @karitauring7361
      @karitauring7361 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, its not a Swedish song. The snippet from the Codex Runicus is in Old Norse. It would sound more like Islandisk in Old Norse. The rest of the song I wrote in English and the Runes used in the spell song are a mix of proto-Germanic and Old Norse.
