Postcards from Melancholy - excepts teaser
POSTCARDS FROM MELANCHOLY (excerpts).
for Bb Clarinet and String Quartet by W. Brent Sawyer.
In August (2024) I found out that The Odin String Quartet (based in Toronto Canada) was looking for new scores for the Quartet and Solo Clarinet. So, I quickly wrote a piece in about 2 days and sent it off as a submission. A few weeks ago, I was contacted and told my piece, POSTCARDS FROM MELANCHOLY (along with some other pieces by much respected American and Canadian composers) was chosen to be premiered by Clarinetest Kaye Royer and The Odin Quartet!!! WOW!!!! The Toronto concert is on January 18, 2025 followed by a Concert Tour beginning in Los Angeles On Feb 2. And a recording in March.
I am so very honored and thrilled to be chosen as a featured composer. Here is a short video with some excerpts of the new piece. The inspiration for the piece is a scary episode that happened to me this past March- while driving alone on a Sunday morning through the desert in Arizona - 60 miles from Tuscon - in the middle of nowhere, my car broke down - the belt that runs everything - steering, power,AC... broke and disintegrated - I had no steering and after driving 10 miles was finally able to maneuver off the highway. I was stuck off the highway for 7 hours until a kind stranger helped me and eventual he changed the belt. During that scary time I looked around at the beautiful, yet lonely, landscapes of the Arizona desert around me - and this piece expresses that feeling of beauty, isolation and loneliness.

Basic Instinct (1992) - Main Title Theme. Music by Jerry Goldsmith. This is the hauntingly beautiful music that plays over the opening Main Titles. It is a very simple piece yet also very sophisticated at the same time. The harp has a rippling arpeggio throughout the entire piece that gives a sensation of perhaps an unending tide ebbing and flowing. The melody is bandied back and forth from dif...

Please don’t ever remove this arrangement. Can’t find it anywhere else! ❤️❤️❤️
This arrangement is so underrated, this is simply perfection compared to the performance. Way better than others on here that have way more views. Thanks for the time you put into this especially with the string section and the horns and the biggest thing was the timing which was right on point, very beautiful and well done.
I love this. I’m covering the entire B side of this album using only my voice. I love that someone else has experimented with covering this as well. Loved hearing this as a kid.
Such an expressive piece of string writing... so emotive and colourful chord palette. Very impressive, Brent. It would be wonderful to see a live performance and possibly, a couple of extra movements.
Superb! You could easily write for horror movies!
Very nice work.👌
So very kind of you. Thank you for listening! 🙏
@@diamondsmusic6413 With pleasure. I dreamed about it.

I love the saxs riff at the end. Excellent progressions. And your graphics are great!

@@diamondsmusic6413 yes I did I was able to talk to my sisters and their husbands on a group video call one lives in California and the other lives in Germany. That's really all I wanted for my birthday..
Congratulations on this performance and this new work. Great seeing new things on the channel. Hope all is well.
Brent, so good to see something new...this is one of my top 10 songs of all time...I'm old enough to remember when Judy Collins released it in 1968. Beautiful arrangement and score. So detailed.
thank you, J. Yes, I have always loved this song too.

thanks for this, super useful. Wondering if any of the issues have been addressed since you posted this.
I wish Warner Bros used this rearrangement of this fanfare rather than the As-Time-Goes-By-esqur fanfare they used nowadays
Absolutely a job well done on the transcription, and loved how each of the midi instruments carried through the entire thing!
Oh, I forgot to ask if it’s possible to receive a MusicXML copy of the score, as I explained in my request that i sent.
Sounds absolutely beautiful! You did a fantastic job!
request for Nikki Webster Karaoke with background vocals @DiamondSMusic song "We'll Be One" thanks
Hello. they all sound a bit fake and synth-like. nothing beats the real thing. j.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...
In which language is this piece?
Lol. The original lyrics (which you can’t see here) are in English. But these are the syllables in the vocal sample library on Staffpad that closest resemble the sounds I could get. (For instance, the beginning lyric is ‘Blessed are those who‘ and of the few available syllable I have to work with it became ‘Te-sa-ta vos do’. Thanks for listening.
Where's the popcorn, I'm ready to start watching.
😂
nice job. Even though the dynamics are consistent with the Omni score, I would dial down the violin 2 part because the counter melody is too loud and overshadows the main theme.
Carol Ann! Carol Ann!

Your videos and score presentation are amazing. So much detail. How you do those insets of the main melody. It makes your videos mesmerizing and so watchable. Love how you are building this slowly up. There's a Bolero like feeling to this.
I'm just mesmerized reading the score and absorbing how you write. Really enjoying the Lonesome Cowboy. Such beautiful work. I'm writing more when I've listened to the entire thing. Such fine work, Brent. By far the most original and my favorite is the last movement. I really love your use of dissonance here. A satisfying concluding movement. Loving the use of brass here. A nice blend of sweetness and punchy tartness. of lighter and more august moods. And a big bravo for that wonderful coda. Well done.
Haven't seen you on my channel in ages. Hope you are well and not working too hard!!!
Can't wait to give this a listen, Brent! Congrats on completing this.
Bravo!
Beautifully realized. Builds to a nice climax.
I would also like an mp3 if possible. Also, are we allowed to perform this version with this instrumental ? Thank You!
how can I get this in mp3 from you? thank you!
What library was the brass, it sounds pretty good!
All the brass was CineBrass for Staffpad.
Listening to this again is such a delight as familiarity with the piece enhances my enjoyment of the beautiful melody and your rich and varied treatment of it. This would be such a hit at the 4th of July concerts the VSO used to give locally.
Did you find a fix for the notes that cut out?
Jerry Goldsmith Isolated Score Universal Pictures
My how fast you work! In the time you've completed this I only have a bit over 5 minutes of my 1st movement on the string quartet. I really enjoyed this, Brent. A very Copland kind of feeling...but I especially like the bi maybe tritonal parts of the climax where things get dense and beautifully complicated. My kind of climax.
Thanks, J -- I was really on the fence about the Brass Bi-tonalty - Its how I originally imagined it - but I added them last and it was so pretty and soothing and quite cathartic without it --- but I also liked the craziness- and obviously thats what I kept! The cacophony is pretty cool too - at least I think it is. lol
@@diamondsmusic6413 I know so.
Sounds like something you could sell to Tombstone
Haha… if only it were that easy! 😁
here's the expanded piece: th-cam.com/video/QlFkCglRc7E/w-d-xo.html
Beautiful melody. Definitely worth expanding into developing this air into an aria.
What a charming and beguiling piece that keeps making nifty turns in rhythm and phrasing, as well as texture.. You always surprise and delight.
Love the video work with the video behind the score. where did you get the footage. This piece is hypnotic like hearing the train's steady rhythm on the tracks.
Beautiful music 🎶
Jazzy...post big band sound of Hollywood 50's and 60's glam maybe. Or a theatre production overture...but so cheerful given her murderous reputation! The orchestration is pretty damn perfect and the libraries are great. You do everything with such polish and panache.
Does Staff Pad have a special feature with the time signatures. I love how it changed like a traffic light. This is such a polished video. I am envious.
This is so wonderful. It reminds me of Tippett's Concerto for Double String Orchestra. This is so crisp, adroit and finely detailed writing. Wonderful contrapuntal writing. Brilliant work. 😍😍
This is amazing. You write for the harp with such grace and ease. You are a natural. I love the way your software denotes a harp glissando. That's terrific. Staff pad of course. from about 4 to 4:32 is one of the most thrilling things I've heard harmonically. What a great ear to hear such a thrilling harmonic progression. Kudos. No reason you shouldn't get this performed. Very fine work. I'm so impressed. The only thing I've written for the harp is with cello and strings. th-cam.com/video/Oa4jwKYe9gw/w-d-xo.html Look forward to hearing more.
Thank you, JC. Do you use Staffpad as well? also, curious where are you? Im in NYC. r u on Facebook?
@@diamondsmusic6413 I use Notion...I think I would be lost having to enter notes manually even though I know how smart Staff Pad is...I like some things about Notion 6 but I like the sounds of MuseScore 4 better than what I have at least for brass, maybe strings as well (and its free) however I hear they are still working out bugs. Eventually have to upgrade my sound. I am in VT (snow country) and I am not on facebook, but would welcome emails to talk music anytime.
@@diamondsmusic6413 got your email. I'll send you that harp fantasy pdf.
I love the moods here. A delicate Franco-American sound. Nice dynamics. The harp is especially good in this library and used so delicately. Mine is so plinky and pianistic. Yours is much more realistic. This truly has a nocturnal feeling about it. It is unmistakable. Beautiful subtle chords at the ending. The style is very unified and the flow and development of the piece feels right. Really strong work, Brent. I'm working on a piece right now called Midnight, but it's rather dark...with a super dark string quartet of Bass, Cello and two violas with a pair of Saxophones (Baritone and Tenor). Regards,
thanks, John. I used to be so scared to write for the harp, but now I love it and use it probably way more than necessary -- but if you can write for it, why not???!!!! in fact, I wrote this harp solo about 6 months ago: th-cam.com/video/GCXj4SvpLLY/w-d-xo.html
rich and subtle in textures. Some nice tremolo effects.
Thanks, John. I was writing with no goal or direction while I was flying home -- actually most of my pieces these days are with no direction or goal----the fun is the journey for me.
Fantastic piece, I love it! This mix of libraries sounds great as well. I remember Tina Guo Cello library having major intonation issues, this kept me from ever using it after one time...
Gorgeous, Brent. And so diverse and evolving.
Ed, thank you for listening!
Beautiful woodwind textures… makes me think of Ravel and the lovely French impressionists. I’m sure the Garden reference primed my imagination.
Exquisite, luscious orchestration, Brent. Very programmatic. I particularly like the string writing and the clarity of your production. Masterful in every way. This piece is the highlight of 2023 so far!
So generous, Marshall. Thank you.
