_____
Biography of McDonald at the time of this recording (adapted from "The Money Paper"):
Martha Louise McDonald is a native of Scituate, MA and attended Scituate High School. During her high school years, she was involved in many productions and concerts (e.g., "The Music Man," "My Fair Lady," Wonderful Town," and "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis"). She was a member of the Scituate High School Concert Chorus and "The Chanterelles" as well as a chorus member of the Massachusetts Southeast District Festival (two years), the Southeast Massachusetts Bandmasters Association (three years), and the Massachusetts All-State Festival (Springfield, 1973).
Martha also played tuba in the concert band and marching band, whose members performed in Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Upon graduating from high school in 1973, Martha was named "Most Outstanding Musician in the Chorus." In 1974, Martha began her studies at the University of Lowell [now University of Massachusetts-Lowell], where she performed in the Collegiate Chorale, Concert Choir, Vocal Chamber Ensemble, Festival Chorus, and University Band. Martha also appeared in Aaron Copland's "Second Hurricane" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1978). Martha graduated cum laude in 1978 and went on to teach music in the Malden Public School System.
Arthur Houle also graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (1976) and, like Martha, was a member of Kaleidoscope, a troupe of musicians who performed in the New England area.

      I'd say this is easier than the Pavane. The Pavane needs a variation of touch which is quite tricky to achieve.

    Wauw I thoroughly enjoyed your elaborate and deep study & text on this magnificent Nocturne, Arthur! It makes me urge to make myself a new upload of it, on my Pleyel at home. It's a beautiful piano grand, but as I stated earlier: my room is very very dry, so it's sooooo hard to upload such a dreamy delicate Nocturne with júst the right amount of half- and flutter-pedals. Thanks again for your perfect study on this. (By the way, I always am somewhat surprised to hear that D# in the bass at 5:14, because I know Chopin does not write that D# in his manuscript, or, well, at least not in the manuscript I have a pict of here at home...and you also don't play that D# at the beginning of the piece (but indeed the F# of the manuscript). But as I understand now there are indeed notations of this D# in some still existing autographs? As are this wonderful variations that you play in the recapitulation? And, Arthur, I love the 3/4 // 4/4 measures, and that story! I never knew that! But I do know that the rhytmn-aspects in Chopins pieces are many many times "overlooked" so to speak with pianists, and piano students...as are his phrasings in many, many, many of his pieces, which make the flow of Chopins virtuosic runs, or his climaxes (e.g. the coda of the second Scherzo: Richter (studio recording) plays the phrasing on these "jazzy" chromatic shifting V-chords in that coda superbly!!) so way way more exiting and jubilant! Kindest regards, Simon 👍🏻🎹

    I wish I had a teacher like you, Arthur. But, well, what do I know...life is not like that haha, it's complicated, so many factors must "click" just at the right moment. And I do know for sure that due to a variety of reasons my own development as a pianist was not able to grow fluently and in the right order (that is: gradually, at the right age the right pieces) and most of all that my own character, my mind/psyche/body, was not helping either. I think I only want to say, Arthur, especially to myself, seeing me making a comment like that haha!, it's not that simple in life to make this easy "I wish I had"-statements. But seeing you play, seeing you teach, and seeing also your love and admiration of pop music, I for sure know you would've been the perfect teacher for the child Simon I think....to guide that young insecure, that totally-not-good-note-reading child, with his dreamy but mostly afraid and not-selfsecure character to master the difficult aspects of being a pianist. But, well, haha, I know I am now just babbling Arthur...but seeing this video it just was something that came up, and sometimes you can be in that mood... Looking back, and teaching myself a lot now, I know that it's a multi layered, very complex thing, this development of a person, a child, into a broad well educated secure good playing musical sensitive and reliable pianist. In my own lessons as a teacher I know how rare it is, that it's all "working" so to speak. Great playing Arthur, I will never be able to play literature like that, but with growing older I especially admire it more and more, seeing it with others. thanks for the upload, and thanks for reading, this Sunday morning (here, in the Netherlands). (It's a long comment, again 🥹) It's open day, today, at my academy, so I will be now today speak and meet and hoping to find upcoming aspirant and talented new students...usually every year it's a challenge to manage to encounter them, on an open day: many, many youngsters nowadays, somehow, don't know the difference between playing an instrument just "as a hobby" on one hand, and the life-changing-decision of choosing it as your main profession on the other hand....ànd: having the abilities (on all levels) to decide and able te do such a thing... Well, at least that's my observation, in many cases. Still, I really like teaching and talking and meeting them, on a day like this. Kindest regards, wish you well ! Simon 🎹

      Thanks once again for your kind words. I, too, wish I could have connected with students like you years ago. We would have had a blast! However, methinks perhaps you sell yourself a bit short, my friend. All of your posts tell me that you are an immensely creative, imaginative and eclectic pianist with unusual depth. Technical virtuosity is, I admit, a nice plus, but hardly a necessity. None of the Beatles have/had a conservatory trained level of technique on any instrument -- yet look what they accomplished! Even their "academic" understanding of theory is somewhat rudimentary. I recently caught a video of John and George working on John's song, "Oh My Love." John could not correctly identify his own half diminished 7th chord. Hilariously, Yoko tried to "help" and also gets it wrong. Yet their intuitive understanding more than made up for their lack of training or degrees. Keep me posted on any upcoming posts, Simon. I'm still basking in the glow of your S & G piano work!

      @@arthurjosephhoulepianist thanks so much for your kind and loving words Arthur ! You make me blush ! In my videos you see, well, at least I try in many haha 🫣, the pieces where I am, more or less, somehow "satisfied" with the results. You don't see the Simon who is crying, frustrated, unsatisfied, insecure, not happy with his output, frustrated with his limitations. But, yes, I do know what you mean, I think: we all, sometimes, tend to overlook one's own qualities. But, well, you know....haha as I always say to my students: don't always look UP, also look dówn, to the levels belów you, to see the road you've traveled (and mine was "long and winding" indeed! 😄). Can I find that Lennon-anecdote on TH-cam, Arthur? Is it in the Get Back-movie perhaps? (Which I still have to watch !! 🙈🫣) And yes, you're ábsolutely right, I always mention The Beatles as a prime example of "non-educated" brilliant musicians. Paul McCartney for example is such a gifted hugely creative completely masterful multi-instrumentalist...my gosh. Or, on another level, my own guitar player/singer of my quartet: I always am surprised how I, indeed haha!, have to explain to them things like "half diminished, b10, sharp 11" etcetera but still looking amazed at how he manages to play all that songs so superbly ! So, yes, virtuosity, note-reading skills, theoretical knowledge, it's all (in the end....!) not réally essential.....BUT, having said all that, as a "professional pianist" (which I 'am', given my job, my work, my "place in society"), I have to label myself as that...) all these mentioned skills are soooooo useful, and it can feel soooooo like an obstacle if one of those things are not there superfluously available when you need it, or well-grounded or deeply mastered and embedded in your musicianship. But, haha, having written that, I know that all great artist, ALL, even the bést of them, have this kind of self-awareness: even Chopin himself, like he stated himself, knows "his limitations". And I can mention many, many other great examples. I think learning to cope with them, while growing older, and be grateful and happy with what you CAN do, is the challenge for everybody :-) "life-art" is the literal English translation of that Dutch word :-) Thanks again Arthur, for your kindest response, I really appreciate that! Simon 👍🏻🎹

    How nice Arthur! Also very nice because coincidentally I do have, for already some years now, a duo with a flute player (flute, alto, piccolo) and we sometimes play just low profile low scale small concerts, with pieces from Piazolla to Gershwin, Pixinguinha to Satie, and (simple) arrangements from Chopin to Gluck. And all kind of other things in between. We're not that much at all on TH-cam (except some little things in our practice-room, and "America" by Bernstein, during a pupils-evening). I hope to upload maybe one day something more while we're playing live. By the way, speaking about "America", I just uploaded a live take from a few years ago where I play the song of the same name by S & G. The sound comes directly from the mixing board, unfortunately, so very very dry, no surrounding noise and acoustics at all, but still I am so curious about what you think of it. Being such a S&G admirer! I worked hard on that specific arrangement, I remember it took me some time to incorporate at least some of the intrinsic specific details of the original studio recording by Simon & Garfunkel. For example, the very "peculiar scale" from the climax (which I play twice, as you can hear, at the beginning, and at the end): I made that up myself, that scale, because of the harmony that Art Garfunkel sings over the "for America"-line in the last phrase at the end of the song. Peculiar, in two ways: first, that "#8"- note (D#) he sings on "...ri..." of "America", and second, the fact that they don't use that peculiar note while playing it live (Central Park). See there the reason why I play that peculiar scale all the way over the piano in the intro and the end (in fact, of course, it's "just" the A Lydian scale on a D vamp in the bass). I remember I did have a rather elaborate discussion (about "that D#" note that Garfunkel sings on that spot) with a theory teacher (classical pianist, and very good friend of mine :-)). But I now only name one aspect of this wonderful song: also the peculiar switch of dominant and Maj7 in the accompaniment (in my arr: in the tenor-register during the intro of the first verse), or the meandering Hammond that's swirling around during the song, or the bluesy clarinet (or which instrument is it?) halfway the song, and of course the exhuberant climax. Well, in case you've got some time, I would love to hear your opinion! Kindest regards, greetings again from The Netherlands, Simon 🎹

    Very musical and sensitive performances! A perhaps funny thing: I played Op.19 in a masterclass with Leonard Shure, in 1985-6. It was in the same hall. Perhaps the same piano even. I remember at the time wondering how familiar Mr. Shure would have been with Schönberg's idiom (given that his associations are a bit more with the 1st Viennese School rather than the 2nd). Now I have at least a partial answer. :-)

    • @arthurjosephhoulepianist
      @arthurjosephhoulepianist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shure's breadth of knowledge was much greater than most people knew. I recall a conversation in which someone in the class assumed he did not play or teach Prokofiev. "I play ALL the Prokofiev sonatas!" he asserted. I have no doubt he did. I once played Debussy's Reflets dans l'eau for him. His approach and comments, while decidedly more German than French, were brilliant. Re: Op 19: Shure was certainly helpful, though perhaps I got more out of my occasional simultaneous lessons with his assistant, Darryl Rosenberg,

    Arthur, I was raised in east Woburn, I didn’t know there was a piano this fine in Woburn, (joking aside) the Falcone shop was not far from my home - they are fine pianos. Thanks for posting this recording- beautifully played as usual.

    WoW that was very good Arthur! 👍🏻🎹 such a beautiful, and also such a difficult !, Etude. It was one of my "first difficult Chopin pieces" I tried to master, long ago. Tried, because unfortunately I never managed to do it properly 😳: especially that superdifficult passage of 6th's in both hands I just could not get it done without mistakes. Maybe, "older and wiser" now, I would have to try again, and gather the guts (so to speak) to do it again. Your timing, phrasing, and tempo of especially that super difficult middle part inspired me to, maybe ?, try it myself again, some day... Thanks! Greetings again from far away The Netherlands, Simon

    Obvioulsly, Beethoven was also deeply influenced by George Gershwin while writing the 3d variation of his OP.111. The fact that GG was born some 71 years after the death of LvB is only an insignificant prosaic detail.

    Thanks for uploading this! These are two different interpretations, each good in their own way. I'm curious - how was Prokofiev 7 on a piano with such a heavy action? One of our annual local music competitions uses a Yamaha baby grand with the heaviest, most unpredictable key presses I have personally experienced in a piano - playing Beethoven's Pathétique, it was incredibly difficult for me to get that leggiero touch. I can only imagine what a piano that causes one to literally bleed must feel like to play on.

    • @arthurjosephhoulepianist
      @arthurjosephhoulepianist 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your nice comments - much appreciated. Playing the Prokofiev 7 on a very hard action was equally daunting - especially those last two torrential pages! Indeed, trying to play "leggiero" on such pianos is like the proverbial bull in the china shop. Someday I hope to get a Schimmel grand.
